What's groovin' bros!?

That was certainly an…eventful year. I hope you all had a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! 2016 was a very quiet year for NiGHTS but then that's a given really :P Some love was sprinkled throughout the year towards our favourite purple maren in various forms.

This website continued to reupload older content, with the NiGHTS Storybook now being available to read in English and Japanese again. Our own "NiGHTS into Webcomics" updated regularly, although with a couple of months silence whilst I set about getting my PC fixed. That was a looooooong time to not have a computer let me tell you! A large chunk of the JoD concept art was updated with better quality images like they deserve.

Customers received their NiGHTS statues from First4Figures during 2016, giving us all yet another way to marvel at the sheer magnifience of NiGHTS' ass! So shiny and sleek! Also teased by First4Figures this year was a Reala statue, with them gauging interest in their choice of pose for it. Keep your eyes peeled for that coming about!

In other NiGHTS merchandise news, we had new garments be made available via Cospa! a Eyemask, T-shirt, and new Hoodie were all released (though I've yet to get my hands on them haha)!

The community were very active over on social media this year, what with it being the NiGHTS franchise's 20th anniversary! NightsOCclub on DeviantART held a T-shirt design competition with some magnificent designs entered! Our own viperxmns won with his Storybook inspired design!

You only have to search for NiGHTS on social media to see all of the fantastic pictures people have made over the year, it's been heartwarming to see people put so much passion into their work! There's also a lot of written love, such as ChaiDreamLatte's AU!

Another stand out item is the Ask the Nightmarens blog! The amount of work people put in to creating regular NiGHTS content is inspiring!

As for me, I took my little NiGHTS plush keyring down to Summer of Sonic in August to guarantee his presence at the event ;P I also met two people that I think maybe have something to do with NiGHTS still being relevant to SEGA!

It's like Admins old and new (and my girlfriend haha)!

We also had our resident Mishikis tweeting some very raunchy things just to get it on the big screen at the event, so cheeky :P

To round the year off we had a NiGHTS Advent Calendar going on during December over on our social media accounts, all of which are preserved on this website! My favourite one was of course number 24;

Here's hoping 2017 is a good year for the NiGHTS franchise!

[PLAY] – Kazuyuki Hoshino interview 2013

Summer of Sonic 2013 – Kazuyuki Hoshino interview
Special thanks to Bobby Wertheim for translating

It was a Saturday. It was Summer of Sonic. It was sunny. Very sunny. London was over-run by hundreds of bicycles. Tesco Local was a warm sandwich gauntlet of death. Small hyperactive children ran around in circles outside with pointy blue hats… Oh and we spoke to the legendary SEGA artist/designer Kazuyuki Hoshino about all things NiGHTS. It's not often you get to sit down and have a jolly good chat with the Lord of Nightmares dad, so yeah! Prepare to be slightly awed by the creator of everything wonderful from Jackle to Metal Sonic!
{The following is an transcript of our short interview we have on audio recording unedited. There also exists a video version by Mr Awesome Eva who loaned us his camera, but for now have the full untouched version with the lols, rustlings, insanely obscure questions and jokes still included. As we were pressed for time and didn't get the chance to have our other interview with Iizuka san (long series/story based questions) we kind of had to just pick short questions on the fly since our plans got messed up a bit. But what we got was still very very cool.}
Also random Jun Senoue *happened* which was hilarious at the time.
Read on for the full interview:

[DiGi] Allllright! Cool.
[Hoshino-San] *spots DiGi's NiGHTS E3 T-shirt* What a great T-shirt!
[DiGi] It's hers! *laughs*
[TRiPPY] It's mine… he took it off my shelf :<
*T-shirt/camera related ramblings and interview begins*

[DiGi] Okay, so firstly, how did you end up working for SEGA and how did your career begin as an artist?
*insert comedy group harassing of translator* Come on Bobby. *fast writing*

[Hoshino-San] I actually went to an art University and always liked pictures and drawing art, I always wanted to be a designer of some sort. Now in Japan at the time games were all the rage and the Famicom was huge for example. When I was in University I wanted to and had the ambition that I want to make games and be involved in that. So in my mind I either wanted to apply for Nintendo or SEGA. Nintendo's HQ they're based in Kyoto, which is quite far away from Tokyo. Now after University when I was going through the whole job hunting phase I was asked by Nintendo to come down to Kyoto for an interview. 'Where do I have to go for this interview?' I said. *laughs* They said 'Kyoto', as at the time they didn't have a Tokyo office. So I just immediately ruled that one out because that's just -too- far away.
*laughter*
So I applied for SEGA. I passed the entrance exam and joined the design/artwork section. That was the beginning of my career.

[TRiPPY]
What is your favourite NiGHTS cameo of all time out of all the Sonic games?
*pause*

[Hoshino-San] Pinball (in Japanese).
*TRiPPY and DiGi laugh*
[DiGi] It's ok you don't need to translate that *laughter*

[DiGi] For the NiGHTS series what did you have a hand in creating? What characters were your creation? What did you create for that series?
[Hoshino-San] *starts listing character names in Japanese* But suddenly does a VERY familiar noise. This is the ingame sound effect of Elliot's voice when he jumps in the air* (wow!!)
*pause* [Hoshino- San] What's the name of the fish?
*group laughs*
[TRiPPY and DiGi] Gulpo, Gulpo.
(Translated)[Hoshino] The characters that I specifically created were Elliot, Claris, they were the playable characters that I created. You probably already know but did you know I was the voice for Elliot? I done all the the 'HYAH!' *motions*
*bemused laughter from TRiPPY and DiGi (We didn't know!)*
And also I designed all of the bosses, Puffy and all of them.

[DiGi]Jackle! I LOVE Jackle.
[TRiPPY] You're a Jackle fanboy.
[DiGi] Amazing.

*Jun Senoue suddenly walks in the room. Everyone stops and looks up. Jun pauses and waves.*
[Jun] Yo.

[TRiPPY] Hello Junnn~
[Group] Eyyyy! *laughter* /end random Jun (Is shushed by TRiPPY)

[TRiPPY] -Begins confusing question of doom about concept art- About Reala! He used to have a different design, he had a different shaped head. I think it was uh, one part Ohshima-San's design and the other part you designed and then they both came together.
[Hoshino-San] *surprised*
Can you tell us a bit about why Reala was changed because the design seemed pretty final, then he got the red and black colour scheme?
[DiGi] We seen some concept art for the first game for Reala and his design changed completely from what he was.
[TRiPPY] *laughter* He used to have earrings.
[Hoshino-San] *laughing* You know too much, you know so much.
[TRiPPY] I know – everything! *laughs*
[DiGi] Fangirl.

[Hoshino-San] So originally it was actually Ohshima-San's job to create Reala, he was designing NiGHTS. He was really struggling, so he actually asked me like 'Hey, Hoshino help me out'.
[LAUGHTER]
[TRiPPY] Do my homework for me.
[DiGi] I need a favour.
[Hoshino-San] So I was like 'Okay' and I started making some designs. So Ohshima-San basically took what he liked from the designs I made, like the nails and stuff like that.

[DiGi] Out of ALL your creations, which one would you say is your favourite and why?
[Hoshino-San] (Japanese) Wizeman.
[DiGi] Yeaaah.

Photo thanks to sonicwrecks.com

*insert Hoshino-San enthusiastically describing Wizeman by doodling on paper and mimicking his hands and cape*
(TRiPPY and DiGi fangirl mode while the translator needs new paper to write on)
[DiGi] Keep going.
[LAUGHTER]

[Hoshino-San]
In the story Wizeman is like the all knowing, all seeing, be all and end all, he is the creator of creation. He is everything. He is the ultimate god. So I really wanted to sort of scale that and represent that visually. That sort of scale of what he represents. So i took inspiration from the Buddhist statue. You know like a Buddhist statue, a typical Japanese Buddhist statue has multiple hands and they've got this sort of halo effect thing going on in the background.

[TRiPPY]
Journey of Dreams has the halo in.
[DiGi] Yes!
[Hoshino-San] It's not your sort of Christian halo though, it's like Japanese halo in the background. So I've taken inspiration from those statues for that. So he has all floating hands, *in the circle* so that's what it's forming. And instead of having a body, he's got no body but he has a cloak – and by not having a body it represents like infinity.
[DiGi] That's awesome~
[Hoshino- San] He hasn't got eyes, but he's got eyes in his hands. That's basically him, he's not looking because he hasn't got eyes, but he's seeing everything. Like he sees – everything. So it's that sort of sense of spirituality, that mythic feeling that he has, that sort of religious motif, that's what I think of, I really like that.

[DiGi] He is a great design.
*laughter*
[TRiPPY] Well done!
Wizeman in Journey of Dreams was amazing, I loved him.
*thinks* Uh, If you voiced Elliot who voiced Reala? *laughter* Does anybody know? I know how the voices were done for the game (*Anon members of Sonic Team recorded the voices during sleep overs at the office in secret)(Just because)(Sonic team)(90's!) So does anybody know?

[DiGi]Nobody knows.
[TRiPPY] Everyone asks me!
*long think*
[Hoshino-San] I'm not too sure.
[TRiPPY] I think it's better if nobody knows *laughs*
[Hoshino-San] I will ask Ohshima-San!
[TRiPPY and DiGi] Yaaay, cool.

[TRiPPY] Where any of the Nightmare designs inspired by nightmares in your own dreams?
[Hoshino-San] Well from when I was a student I was always interested in dreams and what it meant, what it could mean. I read up a lot about it, the philosophy and academic side of what others think of it, like Freud and Jung. So that's what really I was basing it all around. But it turned out, different, what we were concepting at first was quite a difficult and academic thing to grasp. Ohshima-San wanted to implement a more entertainment based, feeling of festivity, of almost like a circus. So it really transferred from being a really academic point of view to start with- to a more light-hearted entertainment colourful and flashy sort of thing. So anyone should be able to understand. It's more sort of mass acceptable entertainment content. Then, with it being a very evil world as well, rather than it being being based specifically on my experiences.

*End of interview ramblings, signing and nattering*

Thank you Hoshino-San for a great and funny interview! :) Thank you everyone for your questions. Don't be disheartened if your question didn't get asked this time because I'll try to get everything answered eventually by those in the know.

NiGHTS fans! We have personal interview time at SoS with both Iizuka san and Hoshino san next week *happy dance* If you have any questions that you'd like to ask then list them below and the best ones will be picked. They can be either NiD or JoD related, infact it would be nice to have a lot of JoD questions this year since we've focused a lot on NiD in the past interviews.

Questions must be respectful, sensible and not massively long/obscure.

Comment to have your questions considered! The resulting interviews will be recorded and uploaded for your listening pleasure.

My dream persona would probably take form of a tiny moth-shaped maren ( I'm a frequent visitor to the Nightmare I'm afraid haha… ).
In my dreams I often view the world through the eyes of different characters/people that I dream about. T
he moth seem to be asleep and inactive but the third eye observes everything quietly, only sometimes using its silky threads to make the
host to follow its bidding.

Hyalus By Amy
This is my Nighmaren, Hyalus. (Hyalus means "glass" in Latin. He is
named for the spyglass he caries) He is an astronomer and a
philosopher. Generally quiet and contemplative, but always willing to
engage in lengthy, deep conversation.
I took a slightly different approach to the "create a dream-world
alter-ego for yourself" idea. Instead of personifying my whole self
and personality, I personified just a piece. I created a Nightmaren, a
physical form, for the "voice of reason" in my head, you could say.
When thinking deeply about various subjects and decisions, I tend to
converse with myself in my head and reason and ration and weigh
thoughts and possibilities. Hyalus here is a personification of those
inner philosophical musings. He's my conversation partner.

When I first read that NiGHTS was inspired by Mystere, I also wanted
to create a Nightmaren based on something from Cirque Du Soleil. I
chose to base Hyalus on a character/creature from O, my personal
favorite Cirque Du Soleil show. .

By Kanna
In our world, there is a lot of bad things, good things, and dreams allow us to create a world of their own, such as we want.
Speaking about the dreams, I am real dreamer, a child in my heart, and always will be so.

When I was little, I dreamed about toys, books, good grades in school, well, probably, like all^^ But when I grew up, I realized that in the world there are more important things.
A long time ago when I had the Internet, my life has changed, I found my best friends, wonderful people who always understand me, laugh with me, and compassion, if it necessary.
And I found in the Internet love of my life, the best man in the world… I love them very much.
There is only one problem-we all live in different cities. Here's what my dream is more than anything else, I want to see them, I want to be with them.
I dream about it when I draw for them, when we had fun laughing on Skype, when I sleep, and I see that dream again-as I ran to them, we hug and go on a new adventure. I hope you understand me…

That's what my picture about-this is my dream in reality, the characters of my friends in the form of small toys flying around me, because my main dream is to meet them.

The first interest that reunited us was from our beloved universe of SEGA-Sonic The Hedgehog, that's why I holding little Sonic plush in my arms.
All my friends there have no character-nightmarens now, but I hope that after the remake of our beloved game, NIGHTS Into Dreams, they will have them)

My Nightmaren character Kanna basing a little on my Sonic character who represents me in the world of Sonic…
Soooo, my favourite color is turquoise, And I'm REALLY long-haired with a long braid in reality ^__^''' So that's Real Me, blue-eyed real dreamer in the world of NIGHTS…

My dream persona is an ethereal thing, lithe and flowing.  Prone to flights of fancy, sky gazing, ignoring the laws of gravity, and painting the clouds with starlight.
She wears a mask, which at it's simplest explanation is a reflection of my love of theatre.  What lies beneath?
Well that varies from dream to dream, but suffice to say the simple exterior conceals potential, different lives, different worlds, different dreams, vibrant in their variety..

By Lil' Shock
My dream self has always been the rag doll of loneliness, LyLyDyA. She is that doll that was outgrown, torn and filthy from faithfully tagging along in the form of a nightmaren. We both share a strong feeling of being left behind. However, there's always that bit of hope that glows from my ideya that she holds so close.

DRiFT by Sami
I'm quite the day dreamer, so I figured creating a Nightmaren based on day dreaming would be interesting.
The character, "DRiFT", is lazy, always tired and is never stood up right. The cloud-like hair is based off day dreaming and it's carefree personality.

Delt by Sarah
In the refuge of my dreams, I am at liberty to become my true self- a creature named Delt.
However, because I anxiously sleep with one eye open, I must dream with one eye closed.
I gradually float back to the surface of reality, racing against time while searching for those fleeting thoughts that are
most important to me before I finally awake to my human reflection.

By Heather

The girl herself is obviously me; but strangely enough I didn't have a "Dream Persona" that isn't/wasn't what I normally portray myself as.
Since I'm very content with my overall appearance and I normally don't have dreams of myself wearing fancy/silly/other costumes.
So instead of giving myself a makeover I didn't really want, I gave myself a pencil that can create my alter ego; a girl dressed up as a clown.
This personally fits better for my "Dream Self" because I love to create things;
pictures, stories, you name it, so long as I don't have to change myself in the process.
My mind is bursting with the creativity and imagination of a child; which leads me to the nightopia itself.

The Nightopia itself was very fun to draw, I'll admit. The whole thing was inspired by my inner child; my alter ego clown-girl.
Since Nightopia is supposed to be the reflection of ones heart, I wanted to reflect the childish part of my heart
(Which I assume would be powered by my ideya of purity with how silly and childish this place is)
And while everything seems completely fine and dandy, you may take notice that the walk way; along with everything else; is floating in the day time sky.
This represents my ambitions to be a writer, and at the same time, my fear of failing to do such and falling to my doom.

~*~

AKAi by Krystal
My Dream Persona is named AKAi.
She's kind, always willing to help when given the opportunity.
AKAi, even on the hottest of nights, would always be seen in sweaters and jackets.
For they give her comfort and that soft, fluffy feeling.
Never will she want to be alone and follows anyone who she can trust..

Athlon by Cristian
Well, his name is Athlon and he has the ability to transform himself in any thing, he can also stretch his arms,
legs and neck as far as he wish, something like a spring.

He also has the ability to change your dreams into night or day by using his swords, if your having a dream where you can see the sunlight,
he immediately can change it into night, making it a nightmare.

If you have a kind and pure heart, all your dreams will be under the sunlight, but if you have a dark heart, your dreams will become nightmares.

The Child of the Moon
In the majestic world known as the 'Night Dimension', where the serene and joy-loving world known as Nightopia exists,
there resides a very unique resident of its existence. Dressed in flowing garments that look as of it was dyed with pale blue moonlight itself,
it roams throughout the serenity that surrounds the world one can only visit within their sleep and their dreams.
With skin as blue as her majestic rags, a fox's face can be seen covering the upper half of her face, only exposing the eyes reflecting the moon's
luminous and guiding light. With dream-like winds in her midst, cherry blossom petals follow and surround her as if they were
children looking to their beloved mother who watches and cares for them. Her child-like body she possesses
signifies the purity of her soul and longing to forever remain young within a dream.
Visitors, Nightmarens, and Nightopians alike all wonder who this mysterious being is, and its origin of its existence.
The possibility of a Visitor remains distinct, for behind the mask, a human is visiting this world for the night,
only to disappear on the dawn of a new day. Or perhaps a Nightmaren, created by the Wicked One's dark power,
whose purpose only lies within the snatching away of beautiful dreams Visitors have at night,
taking them as sakura petals to add to her midst.
Being a Nightopian is another possibility to ponder, as she could be another peace-loving resident without a care in the world.
Who do you think she is?
.

By Zander
This guy's not actually a Nightmaren in any sort, but a regular dreamer. The last half of his life he had trouble with Nightmares. The problem wasn't of dealing with them, but not having them. He had only recently witnessed a nightmare for the first time in years; woke up in a cold sweat and his heart racing fast. The adrenaline rush was actually rather different and refreshing. He enjoyed the experience of fear and danger but ending up in your room unharmed and safe.

This is his disguise to infiltrate the realm of Nightmare. The goal is to be able to explore it and experience the terrors it has to offer, and without the Nightmaren ganging up and directly attacking him.

The disguise doesn't grant any special abilities. He can't fly or do anything terribly out of the ordinary. Perhaps the claws might work as a weapon but that would be the extent of it.

Mindy by Summer
When I started designing Mindy I thought back to all the dreams I had and was going to build her personality based on how I behaved in dreams.
I tend to run away from things in my dreams a lot which made think of a chicken. She had a design that made her appear
more chicken like but after redrawing her a couple times, I came up with her current design which is based more off of Cockatoo.
She has an expressive crest that blends in with her hair, the poofy collar around her neck to represent her plummage,
and her coat tails are her tail feathers. Another thing that happens in my dreams
(or nightmares because I'm usually running away from something when it happens) is I'll sometimes blend in.
So I gave her glasses that act like the personas from Journey of Dreams to let her change shape.
However, one of the lens got cracked which makes her change at random times so blending in doesn't always work and Mindy
will have to keep running away anyway. Mindy likes to believe she is an intelligent being but due to her running away from everything the
citizens of Nightopia might consider her more of a bird brain. (I couldn't help but pun I'm sorry.).

-I'm holding two pencils, one has an axe and the other has a white flag. The axe is the violent solution that I have the power to use. The white flag is the diplomatic solution that I choose to use. There is no normal is my catchphrase…cookie if you can guess who inspired it.
-I imagine myself like that in my Nightopia. Sort of, if I had time (and more practice) I would've used digital art.
-Lately, I've had the urge to know about other countries…
-The tree is kinda dead looking but its growing despite the bad soil…soon It'll reach the moon and I can climb it. Still, there's hurricane behind it…that's troublesome.
-The thing behind the dead tree in the darkness is where my fear is but my ideya  are sort of leaning there because even though I'm afraid I have this sort of admiration for things that I fear.
-The ropes that are tied to my boots are keeping me on the ground, one day I'll untie them and reach for that city on the moon.
-Ninja bunny protects me from the virus called doubt.
-The hole on the ground with the words game over on it give you the illusion that you can give up, but that is only a trick made by fear.
-The endless stars in the sky represent the endless possibilities.
-My hair will only be that long in my dreams, so I will enjoy that luxury. It covers my left eye because I'm shy but my other eye is very friendly.
-The books are coming out of the brown box where ideas are created. They will fly out in random directions as ideas can be very random.
-I have a thing for jackets and jester hats…
-My favorite numbers are written randomly.
-The Emerald earring represents some of my qualities…and the fact that I'm a bit spoiled.
-The fang on my mouth represents what a sharp tongue I have when I'm mad.
-I've been told I'm cute and I've said I'm awesome, but best of all…I'M WEiRD!
-By the way can you guess what city is on the moon?

S'more by Jennifer
She was created from the distress and ideya of an average young adult who had constantly faced misfortune after misfortune.
Slowly breaking and feeling more like a puppet themselves. A rag doll. S'more constantly makes a mess of their dreams.
From the weirdest to the dreariest of dreams. More and more the dreamer tried to drown themselves in the "sweeter" side, while slowly becoming one with the nightmare,
unknowingly as planned. Eventually the dreamer had been lured in by an empty promise from S'more and fell into the all seeing hands of the wicked one.
Although the fate of the dreamer is unknown, S'more lives a well off life. Stalking her crush and hoping to have him all to herself someday even though it is clearly forbidden..

iD by Layla
I drew myself and my Nightmaren "iD". (pronounced id not eye-dee)

iD is a reject nightmaren, basically a broken doll that I was able to find, and dualize with.
Missing many parts, she was able to be fixed up with any spare parts and bits of rags sewn together. (I was able to find them on subsequent trips to the Dream realm)
iD is considered female, a skilled flyer/fighter and is very knowledgeable about places in the nightmare realm, always trying to help visitors find their way back.
She has a quiet somber air about her, but is prone to show signs aggression.
iD is missing her right eye and jewel residing in her chest, hence why iD wears an eye-patch and a twin tailed red scarf.
(In my dreams, 5 different colored scarves represent the 5 ideya).

We love SUMO Digital. We love Steve Lycett. And now with NiGHTS returning back to his rightful spot on the character roster for 'Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed', we love Steve and his company even more. With the Don't Forget NiGHTS campaign now successful in its goals, it seemed to be the right time to sit down with Mr. Lycett and talk about everything that's gone on with the character in the last three years, including how the Flagwaver cameo came about and what went into NiGHTS being drafted for this sequel.

Hello, Mr. Lycett.

Thanks for agreeing to have a very NiGHTSy themed Sonic & AllStars Racing Transformed interview with us here at NiGHTSintoDreams.com.
Steve – No problem, it’s a pleasure to take some time out to have a chat!

1 –
The first time around when you SUMO's were making a SEGA themed racing game, by our knowledge NiGHTS was absent from the roster. That's when we ignited your email inbox, lol. What was your first reaction to the outcry for NiGHTS? Was you expecting such a fan response for the character?
Steve – Panic! All of a sudden I’d got a huge flurry of emails about a character we’d not planned to include, and at a stage when really it was just too late to add anything major to the game! I think both ourselves and SEGA hadn’t understood how much of a big deal it was that we’d not planned inclusion for ASR, we were certainly corrected on that in a very short space of time!

2 -
Naturally, we understand that due to that time in development it would have been impossible to implement NiGHTS as a playable character. However, you didn't want to leave us empty-handed so you incorporated the character in to one of his greatest cameo moments yet, the flagwaver. Who's idea was it to give NiGHTS the checkered flag and how did you go about including it so late in development?
Steve – Yeah, buy that point we were pretty much deep into Alpha, one of the later stages of closing a game down. You’re not really supposed to be adding anything that late in the day! Our first discussion was if we could add a character, but creating a vehicle, building a character and a full set of animations had to be ruled out as we simply didn’t have time available to do it. At the same time though, we were trying to solve how we could add more life to the opening of a race. When we looked at both problems at the same time, we released we could use NiGHTS as the flag man and solve both problems in one go!
However, just having the solution was only the start of it, we then had to take the character model from SST, get it in and working, resolve how he’d enter and leave the scene and discuss it with Iizuka-san to make sure he felt we were using NiGHTS in an appropriate way.
By the time all that was done and approved, we were into Beta, and there you *really* shouldn’t be adding anything. We reached an agreement that if caused any serious bugs or problems that we’d have to let it go. Thankfully though everything went right thanks to the passion of everyone involved to do it, and finally it made the final game. Phew!

3 –
Moving on to the sequel that you're currently working on. When you decided you were heading for the Racing genre again was NiGHTS a strong candidate for the roster after all the initial backlash from the first game or did he take a backseat while other characters were decided upon first?
Steve – Well we didn’t dare not include NiGHTS this time! NiGHTS was on the original character shortlist, plus we also wanted to base a level around the original game too. However, that didn’t mean an automatic inclusion! First we needed to make sure we could work out how we could make NiGHTS work as a vehicle on land, air and sea, plus the same needed to be true of the track!
We also had to run initial designs past Iizuka-san again to make sure he was happy we were capturing the spirit of the original game, and it was Iizuka-san who suggested the character actually transforms into a vehicle. Once this clicked into place, we knew it would work!
You still need to test the characters at focus groups though to make sure they appeal to a wide audience, both of SEGA and non-SEGA fans. Here though, what we discovered was that NiGHTS really resonated with a wide audience, especially with the fairer sex.
That all done and out of the way, finally NiGHT’s made the cut!

4 – The first time around, we all asked for NiGHTS as playable. This time you've not only given us NiGHTS but Reala too, as well as an entire race course dedicated to NiGHTS into dreams history and nostalgia. Going from a cameo in the first game to two playable characters and a track, what made you guys suddenly decide to pour on the NiGHTS sauce for this game? Furthermore, what made you guys decide to include Reala as the second NiGHTS related character and not another character, such as one of the dreamers (Elliot, Claris) or Jackle (another fan favourite boss)?
Steve – Track wise, it made sense for this game. We did consider it for ASR, but when you’re track bound, and the original game really didn’t have tracks in that sense, it didn’t make for an automatic fit. Now though, we’ve got land, air and sea. When we looked for classic SEGA games where you fly… Well let’s say it was a shoe in!
Reala came about as when we asked Iizuka-san about how NiGHTS would work, he drew concepts for us showing both NiGHTS and Reala as vehicles. Since they work in a similar way, we decided to include Reala too.
We have set rules for sizes of vehicles in the game though, with Jackle being a boss, this probably wouldn’t have worked as well. Plus for the track we went with the theme of dreams and nightmares. We felt boss characters definitely belonged in the nightmare sections, so we saved those for there. In fact you’ll see Gillwing, Puffy and Wizeman in those sections!
For the drivers, we did consider the dreamers from the original game or Journey into Dreams, but we felt that no matter which set we’d chose, fans would complain we should have used the others! Instead we thought it’d be fun to use the Pians and one of the enemies (the Guardle) to act as drivers instead! Especially as they need to fly sometimes!

5 - NiGHTS and Reala as characters are able to morph and shapeshift. You've incorporated this element in to their design in Transformed, seeing as they become the vehicles themselves. How did you come about this idea and what other designs did you go through before settling on the ones that you have given them? At any point were they considered to drive a vehicle or were you heavily set on making them the vehicles from the get go?
Steve – Well originally we designed a very abstract vehicle that morphed to match the surface. On Land it has Ideya like nodes to make it float, on water it sprouted a fish like tail to move – and in the air it grew wings.
However, once we saw the concepts from Iizuka-san, we dropped this in favour of the transforming characters, which in hind sight were much closer to what the characters did in the original games. Given the transformation aspect of the game, I think this was the right choice to make.

6 – The first time around, SUMO was blasted with the lame overused response "But, why is Sonic in a car?". You all handled the negative flack really well and went on to selling one of the best kart-esque racing games of the last few years, so Sonic in a car actually worked out pretty well, lol. The flack in regards to NiGHTS now is "But, why is NiGHTS the car?" …how are you choosing to deal with this years cliched negativity? Personally, i love what you've done with NiGHTS because i feel it shows that you've paid attention to the characters details and made them stand out from the rest of the roster.
Steve – LOL, you know, the ‘Hedgehog in a car’ statement has become part of the teams vocabulary! For example when we were discussing tracks and what kind of water surfaces we could race on, I put forward the idea that we could race on Lava. There was some dissent to this. ‘But you’ll burn!’ we heard ‘Lava is dangerous!’ they added. I explained that we really could take some liberties as at the end of the day, we had fantasy characters racing in fantastical environments, with the exact words ‘Yes, I see your point, but there is a hedgehog driving a car…’ It was a done deal from that point on!
We also appreciate that NiGHTS being the car, plane and boat are a surprise, and I hope that as fans were hoping to see what kind of vehicle we’d develop as they’d loved the ones from ASR. However, we agreed with Iizuka-san – who created the whole series – that this was the right thing to do. Once you sit and think about it, it’s perfectly natural in the context of the game, I think with time the NiGHTS fans will accept this.

7 - It could be that people are worried they won't get to see NiGHTS or Reala as themselves at all throughout the game. Can you prove those theories incorrect and will we be seeing the characters in their normal forms too?
Steve – You know, people really shouldn’t worry about this. You will see both characters in their natural forms in the game. You’ll also hear them talk, and although it wasn’t shown in the work in progress trailer we revealed at Summer of Sonic and Sonic Boom, they’re very much animated now!  So relax, it’s in hand!

8 - As far as NiGHTS goes in Transformed, this is the first time we've seen new content designs for NiGHTS (such as the character never being a plane or a car before). You had NiGHTS and Reala in AllStars Tennis but they were pretty much just as they were, straight from 'Journey of Dreams' and handed a tennis racquet. Regarding Sonic Team, how did you go about getting these new designs and features for NiGHTS approved by them? Was there any moments where the designs weren't working at all? Anything left on the cutting room floor that you can tell us about?
Steve – I guess I’ve already answered this, but really, it was Sonic Team who provided the ‘transforming’ characters angle to us. They’ve been really supportive, not just for this game but for Tennis and ASR too. For example when we were making Tennis, it was as Journey into Dreams was being made. We were provided with assets direct from their game to use how we saw fit, which resulted in the Aqua Garden court. In terms of things cut, there hasn’t really been anything bar the original vehicle concepts, and with hindsight, I think we’ve got the better solution!

9 -
The track itself is phenomenal, seeming to be inspired heavily from Spring Valley from 'NiGHTS into Dreams…' then allowing us to head through portals in to various boss levels, such as Gillwings Lair and Wizemans arena. From what i've seen, it's technically 4 courses all mixed in to one race track! What made you decide on such a course for the NiGHTS brand and how did you go about choosing which bosses and levels would appear? Were there any moments where it was designed as just one level without all the extra's included?
Steve – Actually, if anything it was waaaayyyy more complicated before. The design team had this concept that you’d have two Dream Doors to choose from at one point, and depending which route you’d take you’d wind up on sort of a dream river, either on the normal surface, or racing on the surface but from the other side! We had to tone that down a bit.
They also wanted to take a perfect dream like Spring Valley and then make it change it to a nightmare version, but when we discussed this with Iizuka-san, it was clear this wasn’t in the same frame as the original game. There is always a disconnect from Nightopia and Nightmaren basically. It’s fine to transfer between them via a Dream Door- but you can’t mix elements from one with elements from the other.
At this point we decided to do the dream and nightmare sections, so this is what you’ll see in the final game!

10 – Speaking of NiGHTS levels, the character has flown through some pretty amazing places, Soft Museum and Memory Forest are some of my own personal favourites. When choosing a level to focus on what made your team decide on Spring Valley and were other levels considered to be base grounds for the track?
Steve – We always try and find what we consider to be iconic things from the source game, and bring these into our game with some form of twist or change. When we looked at NiGHTS we really wanted to have some nightmare sections and for that, you need contrast. Hence we picked Spring Valley, it provided the contrast we needed, and it was iconically NiGHTS. We also tried to pick elements from the original game – we discussed elements from Journey of Dreams and NiGHTS into Dreams being mixed but again on direction from Iizuka-san that the games were separate, we pulled back to sticking with elements seen in the original.

11 - From your experience in handling the NiGHTS brand for this game and dealing with fans such as ours, what do you think it is about NiGHTS that would make people want to campaign for him? Do you personally see any qualities in the character yourself?
Steve – Really, if you look at the series, it often weaves elements about overcoming doubt and fear and believing in yourself. If you believe you can do things, usually you can. I think that’s resonated with the fans, and certainly, what you tend to find with NiGHTS fans is they’re overwhelming positive – most of the time!
Do I see elements of the character in myself? Not really! I think I have a less than serious frame of mind a lot of the time which could perhaps be compared – but I’m not sure I’d look good in purple!

12 – Now that NiGHTS is too busy racing, who's going to be waving the flag now?
Steve – On this one, you’ll need to wait and see. All I can say is as we start races in the air, it needs to be a character who can fly. Let speculation commence!

13 – Who knows where the future will take SEGA and SUMO, but if the two teams would ever create another entry in to the AllStars series are we going to have to remind you all of NiGHTS again or are we in safe hands from now on? (I know i'm waiting on a SEGA BrawlStars. Would personally love to, as NiGHTS, paraloop Shadow the Hedgehog while fighting on top of a Tem-Jin Virtuaroid, lol) ;D
Steve – You know, we’ve got plenty of ideas for more All-Star games, but we really need to finish this one first! If we did more would we include NiGHTS? Well certainly, if it fits with the game we’re making, but as always I better not make any promises as you never quite know what you’ll be doing next!

A huge thank you to Steve Lycett for his time in answering these questions for us.

The collective power of ultimate win.

So, I was at a Sonic convention this weekend here in the UK. Summer Of Sonic 2012. You might have heard of it? Of course you have.

Our good friends SUMO Digital were there. A funny thing happened. Usually, with the SUMO's you're always going to have some funny thing happen but this particular thing turned out to be a BIG fantastic NiGHTS reveal for Sonic & AllStars Racing Transformed! And, for the sake of keeping things in line, while this reveal was at a SEGA related event it has not been officially announced by SEGA themselves online so this news post is more along the lines of our take on the reveal rather than posting images and videos from it. Once the announcement has been made through official SEGA channels you can bet we'll be posting ALL THE THINGS here.

So. What actually happened?

Well, Steve Lycett and Tim Spencer from SUMO Digital were on stage doing their Question & Answer session. It was roughly a 30 minute stage session where SUMO Digital answered some questions about their new upcoming and quite frankly Miller Ball Breakingly awesome racing game 'Sonic & AllStars Racing Transformed'.

Towards the end, Tim turns to Steve and proclaims "Steve, isn't there someone we've forgotten?" Mr. Lycett says he doesn't think so, though Tim is insistent that he has.

People from the crowd begin calling certain characters though NiGHTS is a name you hear prominently.

The lights dim, the TV's start rolling – and familiar but modern NiGHTS into Dreams… music begins to play.

A lush green valley appears with a ceiling of fields and trees suspended upside down. An Egg Clock floats by. Screen transitions to another area of the location, a Kircle hovers past with it's pincers snapping away before we transition to a floating windmill, a giant Shleep, rock formations moving and changing, and then finally a Dream Gate with an open swirling vortex inviting you to jump in to the unknown. Music switches up tempo to a tune we recognize as Spring Valley's theme.

NiGHTS appears in an airplane shape, soaring through the skies of Spring Valley, accompanied by a Nightopian clinging on to his back. A few quick barrel rolls and tricks through the link rings located around the level before we transition to another character….

Reala flies by, also in an airplane mode, being driven by a Nightmaren Goodle pilot who appeared in 'Journey of Dreams'. Throughout NiGHTS' first appearance the crowd cheered, only to be followed by a second cheer when Reala showed up.
I turn to look at the stage and yell at Steve Lycett that he is a 'beautiful BEAUTIFUL man' before i turn back to the screen and we all see NiGHTS fly through one of the Dream Gates.

Location change, welcome to Nightmare.

You are now in Gillwing's lair, flying through the undergrowth at the base of the Maren's level. Pastel coloured plants litter the ground while green particles of pollen float in the air. Gillwing flies overhead in an awesome show of dominance over his land before we find ourselves flying through a Dream Gate at the end of the trench. We are back in Spring Valley, this time at the top of the snow capped mountains. NiGHTS is now in boat formation, racing through a river at high-speeds, an Ideya Capture hovers, moving from side to side above the rushing water. Transition to Reala who, also in boat formation, does a quick flip after driving over the edge of a small waterfall, the Goodle pilot on his back straightening his hat just before Reala does so.

Cut back to NiGHTS flying through another Dream Gate and suddenly the ambience shifts and the mood lighting is darker, more ominous.

The lord of Nightmares comes in to view in the distance. Wizeman.
The crowd behind me erupts in a cheer of supportive praise. NiGHTS races towards his creator and Wizeman begins flying back making the jester chase him. Rocks hurtle towards NiGHTS, who's barrel rolling to dodge the incoming attacks. We fly through one last Dream Gate at the end of the battle arena before the title logo transitions into view. 'Sonic & AllStars Racing Transformed'.

Remember that title. Remember that logo. And remember this. In the years we have campaigned to keep NiGHTS active I don't think anybody has acknowledged us on the scale that perhaps SUMO Digital have. Year one on the campaigns, they came to our forums even after the trouble we caused them and they spoke to us. They knew that even with our campaign backing it there just wasn't any time at all to put NiGHTS as a playable character in the first AllStars game. They did what they could though so they gave NiGHTS the one thing he's been known to do in Sonic games for many years now and gave him a cameo as the Flagwaver. We were thankful for that. I know that late in development, to start adding new things to a game is very risky and what SUMO had technically done was include a brand new bit of code into every single level. I can only imagine the problems that arose from doing just that. But you know what? While bits of the internet complained, NiGHTS fans were thankful to be represented. It was not what we asked for but we were seriously happy. NiGHTS was not forgotten, even if only for a little while longer.

After that though i thought that was it. SUMO Digital, however? Nope, it seems they weren't quite done with NiGHTS. They were making this sequel and they were going to have NiGHTS playable. And Reala too. And they were going to give the characters a race track made out of one of their game's levels. And that track was going to have areas accessible to other areas where cameo's of other characters from NiGHTS would appear. When you look at what our campaign asked for three years ago and hold it up to what we've been given today, the amount of sheer and utter love for NiGHTS from SUMO is unreal. More than we asked for? Understatement!

For whatever stupid reasons NiGHTS was not in the roster for the first AllStars Racing have been annihilated by this point, and by SUMO's complete dedication to making sure we are represented as much as we possibly can this time around.
They knew we were here and they didn't forget NiGHTS.
Please make sure you say thank you to them. It's the least we can do.

See you in Spring Valley~

Firstly, Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all had a great holiday season and ate terrifying amounts of food.

I just wanted to take the time to write a little post about 2011 since it was a year of a lot of personal triumphs for our fanbase. As usual things were pretty quiet on the official front this year but as always it didn't stop us from making a noise. This year marked the 15th anniversary of NiGHTS into Dreams. For a good few of us that meant a bit more than others because it was around the age of 14/15 we first discovered the game ourselves. That would make the game half our lifetime old. Appreciating anything for that amount of time is pretty special, I know it was for me. It marked a milestone for this fanbase and I was able to look back at where we started from.

I started this website years ago on my Dreamcast browser before I ever owned a PC. The only way I could upload images was to go to a internet cafe in the city to use their scanner. I'd input html code with a control pad. Hotlink peoples seizure inducing images as backgrounds. Plaster rainbow colored text everywhere like it was the greatest discovery ever and oh BOY when I found the code to embed midi's I was an unstoppable force of INTERNETS. I created my site to be able to share my artwork and love for NiGHTS. Words can't express the happiness I felt when the first person NOT trying to sell me Viagra posted a comment in my guestbook. It was a fan, an actual person on the other side of the world who shared the same interests as me. Then over the weeks more and more people came to visit the site. The community grew and grew, the Guestbook was replaced by a forum. Over time the little personal webpage evolved into the hulking global beast of the site you see today… minus the midi's.

2011 started off with the sad news regarding Mr Kevin Eva stepping down from his position as Community Manager at SEGA. He had worked his butt off to help strengthen this community in an official capacity and in the capacity of actually giving a real damn for the franchise and the people who love it. His departure left me feeling a little worried as a fan but over time it just served to make me work harder and be more determined to represent you all in the respectful, polite and creative way from within SEGA that I know you all so well for. You'd be surprised at how many people love and remember NiGHTS. Proud even, because many of them remember or came from this website. As a fanbase we are stronger than ever.

Then came the long anticipated Summer of Sonic 2011. It was an event that really gave me a lot to think about on my journey home. Not only did we get to finaly meet creators Takashi Iizuka and Yuji Naka along with a whole host of Sonic related A-listers…. but I got to meet the next generation of NiGHTS fans. DiGi was supposed to have done a podcast about this but never did, so just let me say, when really young fans approached me because of being huge fans of Journey of Dreams, I was really overwhelmed with proudness. I spotted a lot of NiGHTS cosplayers who I'd never met before. Had kids come up to me and ask me who Jackle was! haha. It's like the whole Modern Vs Classic Sonic thing that happens with Sonic fans, except there was no animosity here at all. Both classic NiGHTS and Modern NiGHTS fans were just happy to be there talking to eachother. I remembered what it was like to be a new fan to NiGHTS into Dreams. I felt really happy to sit there at our NiGHTS booth and realise that this was living proof of keeping the love for NiGHTS alive. I hope that these guys reach their 30's and have fansites and fond memories too.

Meeting Yuji Naka and Takashi Iizuka was more than a huge honor for me. It felt like we were there to say 'Hey we're the NiGHTS fanbase, so many people still care about NiGHTS, here we are, look at the things we've achieved because of NiGHTS.' So it was pretty special. Handing them over a copy of Lucid Dreaming and seeing their faces light up was priceless. I wish every one of you could have been there. It was very surreal. What really shone through was how passionate they both still were for NiGHTS despite how many years had passed.

On the subject of NiGHTS: Lucid Dreaming, I still listen to the album on repeat on my way to work in the mornings. I still can't believe fans created something so perfect. OCR are genius and I feel downright blessed to have been involved with the project. It traveled all across the internet from Kotaku to even MTV! When the teaser trailer aired on the big screen on the stage at Summer of Sonic you could genuinely feel the buzz from the crowd. Hearing people clap and cheer for NiGHTS was the greatest feeling ever! Well done guys!

2011 was also a year of campaigns. Our NiD15 campaign garnered the attention of SEGA and several large online news sites. On the day of NiGHTS' birthday SEGA turned to Facebook to ask if fans would be interested in seeing a port of the original – to a scarily overpowering YES. That one post of theirs got more responses than many of the other announcements put together. In fact the post is STILL getting responses MONTHS later. I think it's fair to say SEGA know NiGHTS is wanted now. Thank you to all 6956 of you who have stood with us through our campaign site so far. Thanks also to the fans who may not be in any active NiGHTS community but who can still say positive things about the old game through various message boards, magazines and news portals. You've all helped us a lot, but we wont give up on a NiGHTS port until it becomes a reality! So lets keep supporting the cause: http://www.nid15.com

The other big event of the year was after SoS I was gifted a huge stack of NiGHTS into Dreams concept art from the original 90's game. Some of the images hadn't been seen before outside of Japan or in a high quality. So I was blissed out to be able to share those with everyone. It's one of those strange things were a franchise over a decade old still keeps giving. I was given a lot of positive feedback on my own artwork from the creators of the game which in turn inspired me to kickstart a new personal NiGHTS fan-comic project of my own:

This will be updated regularly this year in 2012 as a way of grabbing more fans back into the fandom. I'm really excited and motivated to work on this project of mine and I really hope you enjoy reading it in the future :) Things have been incredibly busy at work for me this year but I've always been thinking of NiGHTS or how to involve the fanbase in some way or another. I miss doing lots of fanart, it's how I got started afterall, so my new years resolution this year is to work really hard on giving you all something new to enjoy reading! Through this our website will have much more regular updates from now onwards. I'm also interested in featuring your own fan comics as updates. More on that later.

The end of the year was marked by an absolutely beautiful complete christmas duet by Cameron Strother, the original singer of DREAMS DREAMS back in 1996. Two dreamers reunited again. I can't think of a better more symbolic way to end the year.

It's 2012 now. I want to echo a sentiment from my fellow webmaster Dreadknux across at Sonic Stadium. As long as there are fans I will never give up on NiGHTS or this community. Even if there were NO fans I still wouldn't give up on NiGHTS. I'd sift through pages of spambots to just find that one single real fan from across the other side of the planet who loves NiGHTS too. Real life gets crazy, busy and very demanding… but I wouldn't be were I am today if it wasn't for NiGHTS, so for that I'm incredibly grateful and will always be here.

I hope you will too.

Happy New Year guys. I appreciate you sticking with us.

xx

It's time for a heart to heart with mother TRiPPY guys,

I wont lie, It's been a little bit surreal over here at NiDcom towers the past few weeks. You go from feeling hopeless for years as a kid, wondering if all these famous people who created the thing you love even know how much you appreciate their efforts -  to years later being able to tell them everything you ever felt. It's not very often that fans get to reach out like this I guess, which is sad, but I guess it just makes it more special when it does eventually happen.

A short while after Summer of Sonic I ended up being befriended by my childhood hero. It was actually him who asked me about my artwork first. Which completely floored me. The guy who I look up to the most and who has been an inspiration for everything I've done in the past 15 years. I'd always hoped that I'd get the chance to say thank you to him one day but I never expected to be so warmly accepted in return. Naoto Ohshima the creator of NiGHTS and Sonic is downright amazing and I'm honored to be called his friend. I even inspired him to draw NiGHTS again after so many years ^_^

After 15 years I had a lot of thank you's to pass on from you guys directly, to say how much we all really cared. To explain WHY NiGHTS is so important to us for different reasons. The struggles of the fanbase. To say thank you for all those times NiGHTS gave us hope or saved us from bad dreams when we were just little kids. NiGHTS gave us all the courage to fly. I got to speak my heart without feeling small or like a stupid fangirl. I guess it was the peace of mind I'd been searching for after so many years of trying and trying to keep NiGHTS alive for other people.

So after 15 years the fan was finally able to properly say thank you to the creator :)

But that's not all. Ohshima san was very moved by it all and wanted to say thank you in return so he gave me a seriously epic mind-blowing gift. Some of which I have permission to share with you all today. You know all those tiny blurry concept images that were featured in Japanese magazines and walkthroughs that we all used to speculate over, well how would you guys like to see the images up close from the actual artworks themselves? ^-^

It gives me great pleasure to present to you some of the concept arts that we have come to love over the years. Thank you Ohshima and Iizuka san. Enjoy!

Things to note:
* Images 1 to 9 are drawn by Naoto Ohshima, images 10 to 17 are drawn by Kazuyuki Hoshino and images 18 to 31 are by Miyake (the artist responsible for the Japanese NiGHTS storybook).
* Reala's final design was the result of a collaboration of ideas taking elements from both Ohshima and Hoshino's designs.
* Ohshima is responsible for designing NiGHTS, Jackle, Claris and Elliot, Nightopians and the other main boss Maren. He also had a hand in level design concept ideas, such as Twinseeds Tower.
* Each of the characters had numerous design concepts before they arrived at the final designs.
* It would appear Wizeman has always had a face… lol.

(These images will all be added to our Concept Art gallery tommorow to replace the smaller images).

And then like life wasn't crazy enough he drew me this little picture of NiGHTS.
