I'm all for the overhaul, though. Can't wait to see it. Can we expect all the old sections to be there?

#74740 Sonic 4 Discussion

@Bret- Yes! You win the realistic observation prize. Sonic should not be slowed down to OoT Adult Link levels (He was like a freaking snail without Epona!), but exploration is an important element to balance the (rather gimmicky) speed.
Holy crap, Sonic fans who are in agreement! Soon a cure for cancer will be found, world hunger stopped, clowns and nuns will get along, etc, etc.@bret: Amen!!
Of course, I'm not saying they should make the games any slower, I'm saying playing a faster character shouldn't be conductive of a "race-against-time" style of gameplay. You'd think that after Mario64 set the standards, Sonic Team would just suck it up and follow suit, but with Sonic-like physics and speed and in an obstacle laden environment.
I'm actually disappointed the new game will be a sidescroller. I was hoping they'd just fix all the obvious (and easily fixable) problems with the 3d ones and move on.

I wish people would get past the word "Sonic" and associating it with the gameplay, like speed is the only aspect to the series. The reason the 3d games were so terrible isn't because they were 3d, it's because they had linear unimaginative level design and the focus was primarily on getting to the finish line. That's never been fun, and it never will be.
And yes, you can ruin a 2d game in the same manner. Side scrolling doesn't dictate how the game is played. It could simply be another shallow get-to-the-finish-line failure of a game.
But, y'know... Plan for the worst, hope for the best. Maybe developers will actually play the old games as reference this time around and stop assuming Sonic "just isn't fast enough".
#74452 Okami series thread

Video-
This looks to me like more of a spin-off than a sequel or prequel. Like they chibified ammy and threw 'er on a short mediocre portable game. Not canon to established story.
Not saying it looks bad or anything. I just doubt it'll sell me a DS, or have anything to add to the original.

OH, THE IRONY! D: I lol'd. Passionately.But I don't got money for a DS! PS3 please!
I don't own either, but Okami was begging to have a game on the DS, be it a port or a sequel. Awesome news.

I never got the twitter thing, but I'll sign up if free stuff entails.
#71271 Which would you prefer? A Nights anime or a cartoon?
Posted by -bret- on 19 June 2009 - 01:02 AM in NiGHTS chit-chat
Japanese writers have a tendency to stray from the roots of a show, dragging on a tired sequence of events until the show doesn't at all resemble what it started out as. Western writers usually take a premise and setting and write individual episodes based on that. After each episode they go back to square one, so the overall story arch doesn't become an aimless mess. Each individual episode would have a point.

But I'm all for it, if you can find some way of making it exclusive.

I'm not a very big fan of bright white on monitors, so this toned down gray is kinda nice and easy on the eyes for me.
You're probably gonna hate me for bringing this up after you spent so much time looking for a proper replacement, but I really miss the old Black&Purple color scheme. Is that not possible with these boards?
#67511 Journey of Dreams hacking stuff
Posted by -bret- on 16 February 2009 - 07:39 AM in [ARCHiVED] JOD Discussion
On a somewhat unrelated note, these are pretty bad. Even for Wii. It may not be the most graphically powerful of consoles, but I've seen far better on the system. So it's no excuse.
#64956 What is there to interpret?
Posted by -bret- on 24 November 2008 - 09:05 PM in [ARCHiVED] NiD Discussion
Journey of Dreams fails because the dreamworld wasn't ethereal in any way, and characters had coherent conversations with one another as if they weren't within a realm of random thought and limitless possibilities.
Here's a scene depicting a bunch of unnecessary crap about betrayal and Reala being a Disney villain.
That's what we call leaving nothing to the imagination. I cannot relate to any of these characters. Story wasn't what NiGHTS was about, it was the theme. Not cliche plot devices. Not stock characters.
