#65312 Do you consider Reala truly evil?

Posted by Sage on 11 December 2008 - 09:31 PM in NiGHTS chit-chat

Hey gang, long time no see ^^

I tend to use DnD terms for a character's alignment, as it seems to fit best when describing them to another person.

Reala, to me, is fluttering between Lawful Evil ("I'll follow the rules as long as it's convenient for me" / "Rules are there to manipulate to my own ends") and Neutral Evil ("I'll do what I want on my own terms, and I don't care if it hurts someone.") Of course, neither of these fits him perfectly, but they sorta help. Reala's fearful subservience to Wizeman takes away from those descriptors, so it's kinda hard to call him evil when he's little more than a lackey XD

Now if he were to renounce Wizeman and do his own thing, then yes, you could describe him as evil, in that he would do what he wanted with little care for the Nightopians or Visitors. I could, however, see him teaming up with NiGHTS to stop something that would interfere with his own agenda.

Huh... I guess you COULD easily cast him as a Shadow for the NiGHTS universe XD

#70409 Why is that your User Name?

Posted by Sage on 27 May 2009 - 02:54 AM in Community Corner

"Sage" is my nickname among my college friends. One of the other girls and I have the same name, so we each took a nickname; I chose Sage, and thus it's been for 5 years or so now XD

I chose "Sage" for three reasons (in no particular order): first, in honor of one of my favorite game characters, Harpuia from Mega Man Zero. His title, "kenshou" (lit. "Intelligent General"), is translated as "Sage" in the English version of MMZ2; second, Sage is one of my favorite herbs, and is a known mood enhancer (Sage make you happeh!); lastly, some people have said I'm wise beyond my years (one of my managers says I'm too old for my age, lol), and "sage" is a title given to someone deemed wise. I enjoy learning and exploring new ideas, so my nick/username is a reminder to myself to continue learning and keeping an open mind so maybe one day I can live up to the wisdom people credit me for.

#70415 Twilight: Love it or Hate it?

Posted by Sage on 27 May 2009 - 04:46 AM in Community Corner

My first reaction when I first learned about Twilight was "meh, just another vampire romance novel." Sadly, while I enjoy certain novel series with vampires and romance in them (Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter novels ftw!), most if not all of them are basically the same plot with different names inserted. Fun, but not amazing and not necessarily good or bad reads.

Then a couple of months later I keep hearing about how apparently awesome and life-changing Twilight is. "Holy sh!t, it's gotten hyped," I thought to myself, and I've learned over the years when something has that much hype, the material is either awesome or fail, or the material is pretty good and fun but the fanbase ruins what fun there is for everyone else. After reading pros and cons about it I decided to try and read it.

I have a lot of respect for those of you who were actually able to read the entire first book, much less the whole series. I couldn't get past page 53 because Bella's behavior and attitude DISGUSTED me. All she seemed to do was mentally whine about everything and snub the people who were being nice to her (whatever their reasons). The thing that got me the most was that, of all the kids that were nice to her and helped her out during her first day at a new school, she has the nerve to say that the nicest person she "had met all day" was the only other person who wasn't originally from Forks: the boy from California. Snobbish much, Miss Swan? ><()

It took one of my friends reading the whole series and telling me the story herself to help me sort out the hype, the hate, and the actual material. This friend is an avid reader and has introduced me to all kinds of awesome stories, and she reads very carefully to make sure she understands everything. Thanks to her explaining things to me, I've concluded that SM has two things destroying her here:

1. poor writing (show, not tell, SHOW, NOT TELL! >.< I saw that from page 1)
2. attempting to use science to explain the vampires (And Renesmee, dear god ><()), then not sticking with it

Stalking and the creepy imprinting the Werewolves do among many other things notwithstanding, the Twilight series would have been better if SM had better writing skill (she's improving, from what I've heard) and had just stuck with vampires being completely supernatural beings. I would have been able to accept the sparkling a little better if she had. XD

I may try and read it again when my bile for the books has subsided a bit. For now, I'll stick with Stephen King's Dark Tower series X3

#70868 Cooking! (and baking)

Posted by Sage on 04 June 2009 - 03:20 AM in Community Corner

I officially love this thread <3 Now that I've graduated college I actually have time to cook real food. These recipes sound great!

My best friend Heather makes the most awesome homemade cheesecake evar <3 But then again her cooking is awesome all the way around. I'll have to ask her how she makes soda bread (she's made it with orange soda, coke and sprite).

My grandmother had a recipe for this awesome sourdough bread and she used to make it a lot when I was a kid. She stopped making them because some of my relatives jokingly said they were getting fat on them and she unfortunately took it seriously XD Sadly she also lost the recipe. ;_; I've spent the last couple of years trying to recreate that recipe in my spare time, and while I've managed to get the flavor down, I haven't quite figured out what's keeping my bread from rising. My dad says that given how I prepare the bread, it's probably from over-kneading. Is this possible?

If I manage to figure out the recipe, I'll share it. ^^

Meyer blinded you with science? :P

From what I've read, she tried to and failed miserably XD

--She says that vampires have two extra chromosomes, which gives them their hard sparkly skin and powers. If this is true, then scientifically speaking, Reneesme couldn't have been born. An extra copy of chromosome 24 in humans causes Down's Syndrome. Two extra chromosomes with nothing to match up to in a human sex cell wouldn't work and the pregnancy would likely abort before it could really start.

--Meyer also has apparently said that all the fluids in a vampire's body turns into their special venom, which is responsible for changing a human into a vampire and is also how Reneesme was conceived. Perhaps a better choice of words would have worked better. Venom, as definied by Wiktionary is:

A poison wielded by an animal

Poison is, then:

A substance that is harmful or lethal to a living organism; something that harms a person or thing.

Venom, therefore, harms or takes life, not begin it.

Those are the two examples I can think of off the top of my head. Meyer would have been SO much better off if she'd just stuck to the supernatural to describe the vampires. XD

#70870 Darren Shan and The Looking Glass Wars

The Looking Glass Wars sounds fascinating. o.o I was planning to go to the library tomorrow to find a book to read, so I'll take a look at that.

I actually enjoyed American McGee's Alice XD Cool game, very interesting twist of horror on an old favorite. X3

#70871 The Silverwing Series

Posted by Sage on 04 June 2009 - 04:07 AM in Community Corner

Bats are my favorite wild animals, so I was thrilled when I found the Silverwing Series by Kenneth Oppel. It's a children's fiction series about a young bat named Shade who breaks a very old law and watches the sun rise, and the serious consequences of this seemingly innocent action thrust him into a long journey to reunite with his mother and colony.

I'd love to write my own story about bats, so this was an inspiration for me. X3

Has anyone else read this?

Here's the Wiki link: http://en.wikipedia....erwing_(series)

#71571 Michael Jackson has passed away.

Posted by Sage on 28 June 2009 - 10:44 PM in Community Corner

I was surprised too. I grew up listening to his music over the years, loved that unique sound <3

I hope that he can finally rest in peace now, though.

I agree, DiGi. Now he will have the peace he's wanted for years now.

RIP Michael Jackson

I actually live near where he grew up. I can get there in about 15 to 20 minutes or less.

Gary? Wow, that makes us practically neighbors X3 Greetings fellow Hoosier (if I'm right XD)

#76012 Have you become afraid of something as the result of a nightmare?

Posted by Sage on 21 September 2009 - 06:10 AM in Dream Discussion

Wow, reading these has brought back some memories I haven't looked at in freaking EONS oo()

For some reason the old '80s Viacom logo was in a nightmare I had as a little kid and I would hide my face and cover my ears whenever it came on for a couple of years after XD No issues now!

Sierra: I can totally relate. For a while throughout my childhood I used to have dreams about people and shadowy figures chasing me and trying to capture me, usually for something about me or something I possessed. Never did figure that part out, but eventually I learned to turn my dreams around so that I could hide from them and escape. Nowadays when those dreams come to me, I hide and escape, then go and taunt and humiliate them and escape their chasing me again. It's pretty fun actually, wish I was in such good shape in real life XD

Nocturne Wonderland: You know, it occurred to me not long after finishing JoD: Nightmaren apparently have to draw information from the victim to know how to attack them. For Helen it was her guilt over not practicing violin with her mom; for Will it was his fear of being alone after his father left. Reading back through everyone's posts, several of us can trace the root of a nightmare to something they saw or did in the real world, like the Scary Stories books for example.

Anyone notice a pattern? :3
