#19247 A NiGHTS JoD tribute video I put together! ^_^
Posted by Deep Loner on 02 October 2007 - 06:40 PM in Creative Stuff!
One thing I especially paid attention to: it takes effort to use Windows Movie Maker and create something that doesn't suck. The special effects you chose clearly weren't random, but were carefully chosen to complement the video. I especially liked the flash in the beginning synchronized to the music.
I also enjoyed the comparisons between the JoD and NiD footage.
Overall, very nice work.

Who's Jackle???
Who's Jackle???
WAIT JUST A PIAN-SPITTIN' MINUTE HERE!!!! You do not know who JACKLE IS?!
Just go to devART, man. It's that simple. search him. You ought to find something in there. believe me, I search Jackle on devART over & over again just to find wallpapers and crap like that.
Sometimes, somebody can say something so ridiculous that there's no possible way it can be taken seriously. ESPECIALLY IF THE POST ENDS WITH !!!!!Answer to Deep Loner: Jackle is one of the Nightmaren bosses, initially fought as Claris's third boss fight which happens at the end of the Soft Museum level. Here's the site's art page on him:

They should sell that powdered flavoring stuff by itself. That would make sucking Doritos unnecessary. <-- Pay attention to that plese.Oh yeah? You all love Reala so much? Reala can go suck a dorito for all I care.

#13429 Do you want to appear on DreamCast?

Ah, I'd sell my copy of Japanese Christmas NiGHTS for a microphone...
You shouldn't have to. If you're from the US, you can get this one for only $5.00, and the sound quality is as great as you could expect from anything higher-priced.

Indeed. Journey of Dreams is looking to be a high-quality game of the same premise as the original, but with slight enhancements and modifications that I think will serve well to expand the universe. Welcome.Welcome, you came at just the right time.

The vocals are different, way different.
I knew they sounded different in some parts, but I thought that was just because of the remix (e.g. reverb that was added, or the differences in the accompaniment exposing vocal nuances we didn't hear the first time, stuff like that). They really do sound like the first vocalists. Am I tone deaf or something?
Anyway, I'd also like to see Helen and her mother play the opening strings part.

Welcome to the forums.
PS: You mentioned being a "computer nerd". Do you know how to program? If so, in what language(s)? Also, where can we see some of your Flash work?
PPS: Well, I clicked on the picture, and I see you know at least C++, Java, and Visual Basic. You also use Linux, which graduates you from nerd to geek.
PPPS: Which Linux distro do you use? (Final postscriptum, I promise.) Edit: It's on your signature! Wow I feel stupid.

#18836 HORNS or HAT?
Posted by Deep Loner on 29 September 2007 - 11:09 PM in Poll Area
That would certainly rule out horns... but I never noticed that. I'll have to pay more careful attention from now on.They don't blow just a little in JoD...his hat is almost never in it's usual position while he's flying.
That's exactly what I was thinking about what you wrote....wait, what?
#18695 HORNS or HAT?
Posted by Deep Loner on 29 September 2007 - 03:30 AM in Poll Area
I'm certain that this has been suggested before, but what about the possibility of horns beneath the hat? The Japanese title DREAMDEMON suggests the possibility of horns, and while it is true that not all artistic rendetions of demons possess horns, it is common enough for serious consideration.
It is true that some of SEGA's concept art sketches show the "hat" standing upright. As far as I know, however, this never happens in the actual game; those drawings thus have no more canonical authority than the super skinny or midget NiGHTS designs considered for use in Journey of Dreams. Of course, however, a definite conclusion cannot be reached without authoritive evidence of the intentions of the design team, but I feel that a hat over horns stands as a substantial possibility.
Thoughts?

#18080 Ideya Quick Quiz
Posted by Deep Loner on 24 September 2007 - 05:24 PM in Poll Area
I respect your opinion, Ekairi. But I disagree substantially.Wisdom is praticaly born with the knowledge they have.
And Intelligence is learned by studying and hardwork.
(Thats how I view it.)
I think that it's more accurate to say that knowledge and skill are learned by studying and hard work, since these attributes are hardly inborn but must be accquired and trained.
At the risk of oversimplifying, intelligence would be more like a clock speed measurement of the brain, specifically, of the brain's ability to learn and process information. Take two children in a classroom. One of them might learn and solve problems quickly, the other might need to take a little more time. While both are studying toward the same knowledge and skill, intelligence is responsible for the ability to do mental work quicker and more efficiently. Researchers speak of "multiple intelligences", or different measurements of intelligence for different cognitive functions, and this is probably accurate. Overall intelligence is believed to remain fairly constant throughout one's life, although I personally believe that intelligence can be voluntarily increased, albiet only with very hard work, and only marginally.
I've always view wisdom as knowledge and intelligence applied towards practical value and towards the greater good. The difference isn't particularly clear, because, for example, a person who does something wise is often (perhaps incorrectly) said to be acting "intelligently". But there are plenty of examples of intelligent persons committing foolishness, which is the opposite of wisdom. For example, a person might have knowledge of what could happen if the bills are not paid, and with intelligence may even be able to reckon how difficult life would become under those circumstances. Yet if this knowledgable, intelligent person decides to stay at home playing NiGHTS into Dreams all day, he's acting very foolishly. This is still an intelligent person, but one who is making stupid choices, and is certainly not wise.
Perhaps a better example: emotional intelligence is the ability to infer another's thoughts and feelings in interpersonal situations, much as rational intelligence applies to learning and problem solving (and I must admit to not being very emotionally intelligent). Someone who uses emotional intelligence (along with knowledge) to help another person and save a friendship is acting with wisdom.
This is why I believe that wisdom synergizes knowledge and intelligence, and is also a step above either of the other two.
It's a neat quiz, and I like the discussion it produces.
Indeed. One cannot go to school to study wisdom (so-called "wisdom literature" is NOT the same thing), and life lessons are both the primary and most effective means of aquiring it.I always saw wisdom as knowledge about things you couldn't study in books, if that makes sense. "Lessons of life" and all that...
My intelligence tells me that you were expecting blue.green

By the way, did you want us to try to crack the name color quiz? It's probably not that difficult...
#15508 Japanese JoD site is up!
Posted by Deep Loner on 05 September 2007 - 06:16 PM in [ARCHiVED] JOD Discussion
That reminds me.They should sooo have a download to do this with the mouse all the time.
When I finish reinstalling all of the software on my hard drive, I'm going to make a Windows Media Version of the video trailer on the site. Just because I can. And also so anyone who wants to can make a JoD AMV.
Also, would anyone like to be able to run the Flash files off of their hard drive?

Sorry, I can't convert the video without distorting the right edge of the video. This is a problem with the ffdshow decoder that I'm using.Good idea. I know I would totally love to replace dreams dreams with death metal.
RealPlayer plays it just fine, but RealPlayer can't be used as a source filter for encoding.

#15894 Japanese JoD site is up!

I don't think that the Japanese are necessarily better artists or programmers. Probably, since none of the real development is done in the United States or Europe, SEGA of America and SEGA of Europe basically exist as distribution and marketing companies rather than actual developers, which means that development talent in these companies is going to be limited. In contrast, SEGA of Japan can tap a much larger reserve of talent for something like a Flash site. Regular programming skills are easily transferrable to Flash. The ActionScript language used in Flash is basically EMCAScript (informally known as JavaScript) with a different object framework. ECMAScript (JavaScript) shares much of its syntax with Java, which is very syntactically similar to C++, and either that or regular C is most likely used for SoJ's game programming. So SEGA of Japan has potentially lots of people who could code a Flash application. On the other hand, SEGA of Europe and America probably have a much smaller base of web developers already busy with lots of other work anyway. Some of these developers might even have no idea that Flash is basically just a JavaScript-driven vector graphics engine and be reluctant to work on such a project. There's a tendency among the technially-oriented to view Flash as some kind of mysterious black box that only special kinds of people, like "artists" and "designers", can transform into something useful. Usually it's just because technically-oriented people like myself have no artistic ability whatsoever and so wouldn't be able to do anything useful with something like Flash anyway.Japan usually comes out with everything first. They seem to be a lot faster and better at making Flash sites too.
Why are all the Japanese such brilliant programmers and artist?
As you might have guessed, I have no idea what would be involved in creating the artistic resources for something like the JoD Flash site, but my guess is that, besides having more artistic talent available, Sega of Japan would also have easier access to whatever art resources arise as a normal part of the development process, thus giving them more to work with and more people to work with it.
It's just the way that the game industry has developed that more of the development resources are in Japan. If JoD were being developed by an American company, it would probably be the other way around.
I know that the old Japanese NiGHTS into Dreams website has a link to the JoD site. Also, is there a link from the main Sega of Japan site to the NiGHTS site? I can never find anything there! Not even the search engine helps. I have seen the site and all...I just want to know how anyone found it.
