I've wondered this for the longest time, and I know I'm not alone. So what's your take? What made NiGHTS turn his back on his own kind, his own "family"? In fact, you may recall from Niraven's report that

William asks NiGHTS if he has a father too. NiGHTS replies after an uncertain moment, "Well, I guess you could call him that..." Maybe it's just to earmark Wizeman's likely return, but what if it goes deeper than that? The game's underlying theme is about family bonds, after all...

The original manual says that NiGHTS is attracted to red Ideya. My guess, then, is that he's attracted to the dreamer's potential in Nightopia. The world changes depending on the dreamer, right? Imagine if someone could do that with our world! You'd be darned impressed! X3 Maybe NiGHTS is fascinated by us, by our own little worlds, and he doesn't support Wizeman's plan to turn it all into Nightmare.

Of course, I could just blather on and on, but I leave the mike open to you now!

Personally, I don't think that NiGHTS rebelled so much as (s)he disobeyed. There's a difference.

See, in my opinion, NiGHTS is a free spirit. (S)he loves the ability to fly around, play games, perform tricks, etc. So, as I see it, Wizeman would constantly order NiGHTS around and NiGHTS would say or do something along the lines of "No, I'd rather fly around all day."

Obviously, this would've ticked Wizeman off, leading him to trap NiGHTS in the Ideya Palace, depriving NiGHTS of the freedom (s)he holds so dear.

But that's just my theory.

I believe he traitored away because he valued his freedom. He had often not quite followed Wizeman's orders before, mostly because they weren't what he wanted to do. He felt like flying all day, messing with the local Nightopians, and showing off, whereas Wizeman's plans didn't involve any of these, just work and organization. So, horrible as it is to say...it just wasn't his style.

I'm sure it was a big decision, too. I mean, he probably KNEW that Wizeman could kill him in a heartbeat, yet he still traitored away...certainly odd to value your freedom over your life, right? Well, isn't that what soldiers do? Of course, it's not the same situation. No one's going to kill someone if they don't want to serve in the army, right? NiGHTS didn't really have much of a choice, so I guess he took the risky route and look what it got him.
Just what he wanted.

Freedom.

I'm also sure it wasn't easy, either. NiGHTS basically wiped out all those he called family. His brothers, sister, and father. All dead (or so he thought) because of what he did. I don't doubt that NiGHTS has often looked back at what he has done...and wished he hadn't. His brother disowned him, his partner...his only friend. Reala claimed 'There is no, NiGHTS!' because when NiGHTS traitored, it was like he had died to him. NiGHTS no longer existed to Reala because of what he did, and Reala certainly didn't see him as his brother anymore, of course. Although Reala doesn't look the part, I'm sure he was saddened by NiGHTS' decision as well.

So, was it worth it? Freedom over your loved ones? I guess that's up to you to decide.

Of course it was worth it to us. If what happened in NiGHTS into Dreams... had really happened...we'd all be in a HEAP of trouble if NiGHTS hadn't traitored from his family. NiGHTS saved the entire Waking World...millions...BILLIONS of lives because of what he did.

So...I guess you can't TRULY say why NiGHTS turned traitor...but I'd bet you a cookie and some blue chips it was the right to fly as free as the wind.

That could very well be, Curiosity and submas! I have a bad habit of sussing out the deepest depths of character depth.. comes with being a writer.. XD Then again, along with your theory, EZEKiAL, freedom is probably the biggest factor. That's what most people feel when they fly in dreams, so NiGHTS could be representing that boundless freedom!

EDIT: I just have to add - NiGHTS really did take out his family in the original, didn't he? And now that Reala's back from.. well, wherever NiGHTS sent him, what on earth are the repercussions gonna be? O_o

(Personally I can't wait to see them meet up again in JOD! )

That...is exactly how I see it. I never knew anyone thought of the same thing. A lot of people think he was once super evil or something. I just think he didn't feel like doing Wizeman's dirty work and that is why he was doomed to 'insubordination.' I really don't remeber ever reading anywhere that he rebelled. Just that he was traped due to insubordination. Hum....

Wow, that's almost /exactly/ what I said in an older topic a while back..About NiGHTS and Reala's relationship. oO Guess I'm not the only one who thinks that, then. Sweet! Reala's line means a lot more than most people think. ^.^

Like most of ya think, though, I say NiGHTS rebelled because he didn't like being ordered around. =3

NiGHTS and Reala were created by Wizeman at the same time. So, the two of them treated one another as brothers. When NiGHTS decided that being evil wasn't what he wanted and left, Reala took it badly. When Reala says "There is no NiGHTS!", I believe that he's saying that his NiGHTS, the NiGHTS he knew, no longer exists. I take too much time to think of these things, huh? Well, anyways. The two fight because Reala, in his mind, thinks that who he's fighting is not his brother, so it doesn't bother him. NiGHTS is simply a rogue 'Maren who is getting in his way. To put it simply: Reala refuses to acknowledge that his brother even exists anymore. Selph, on the other hand, is NiGHTS' mind telling him what he is. In order for NiGHTS to have a clear conscious and remain good, he must defeat Selph and prove to Reala that no matter what he does, NiGHTS is NiGHTS and will never be evil.

It's because Reala ate Wizeman's last cookie and NiGHTS got blamed because Jackle decided to play a little card trick which manipulated Wizeguy into believing the story.

Hmm I feel the need to throw my 2 cents into this topic.
I've pretty much always had the same sort of theory as most of you guys, that NiGHTS rebelled because he valued his freedom. However, recently, I thought of something new that I haven't heard from anyone else.

That is, maybe NiGHTS isn't a traitor at all.

Maybe he, Wizeman, and the other maren are all actually working together. Maybe the nightmaren aren't really "evil", but they are really meant to help the dreamers? You know, the whole "pain and suffering makes you grow stronger" kind of thing.
Nightmares are necessary because without them, Claris and Elliot would never have found the courage within themselves to face their fears. Ultimately, their nightmares helped them to grow.
So, maybe it is all just a big, elaborate play put on for the dreamer. Wherein the nightmaren are obstacles to overcome, Wizeman plays the part of the villain, and NiGHTS simply plays the part of the helper.

I may get yelled at for this because ITS NOT CANON!!!11, but... I dunno, it just makes sense to me. (The plot of JoD will probably kill this theory dead though, ahah. XD; )

Well, NiGHTS has a voice now, so that's obviously going to shed some light on a few things.

It's not easy to talk without giving away some idea of your personality.

The way i see it myself is as Thus- NiGHTS WAS Created for the Intent of being the Nasiest, most Diabolical of all the Maren of them all, but somewhere along the Line Wizeman mesed up. Short, simple, and sweet.

Oh, and Reala's voice? Just 2 words...

Seriously I believe the reason that NiGHTS left was because he didn't appreciate how dishonorable the Maren family had become. He believed the family should have continued to make small nightmares to scare the people in their dreams but when Don Wizeman decided to take over everything and paint it black NiGHTS said enough and flew off into the distance.

I dont think NiGHTS wanted every dream to become a nightmare, to be honest. If he's attracted to courage, fighting for the victory of fear seems rather strange. This is in addition to the "freedom" thing.

I just dont think NiGHTS was evil. "Hey, let's take over Nightopia and then spread into the waking world! Clawz can chow on some people. NiGHTS, go get us that red ideya." "Lolzno" *lock up*

He probably saw Passions of Christ and felt that was enough (heck it got some guy to turn himself in).

But on a serious note, I believe that NiGHTS probably saw something heinous being done by the Nightmaren to either the dreamers or the Pians and he just couldn't turn a blind eye to it anymore. But this is only a theory and, as said earlier, might get shot down by the game.

For me, it's never been a question of moral alignment. I always figured he rebelled against Wizeman because Wizeman was in his way. NiGHTS is self-aware and has free will (and obviously a STRONG will), and he has quite a personality. To me, he's the type to make his own decisions for his own reasons, and to hell with anyone else really. Being under Wizeman got in the way of his freedom, so he quit obeying (if he ever did at all. XD) and did what he wanted. Hence Wizeman locked him up; my guess is Wizeman was going to deal with him later.

I'm interested in seeing what Journey of Dreams reveals about this little tidbit. =)

I've always liked the whole "NiGHTS used to be evil" thing. I think that NiGHTS may have noticed the pain and suffering humans were going through with the help of the Pians. Of course, the problem with all this stuff is that they're all just fan theories. And if Wizeman returns in JoD, light may be shed on this subject.
