Hello everyone.
Recently I've been trying to make a fangame similar to NiGHTS into dreams. It's a 2D game similar to my other fangame "Reala's Nightmare" (I've reused most of the code), except it now works more like NiD, you have to get 20 Blue Chips then go to the Ideya Capture then go back to the Ideya Palace and you can do extra laps if you want.

But I would need help with some stuff that I think would not be good enough if I did it myself.
So I'm looking for:
- an artist, to draw the sprites, level tiles and/or backgrounds
- a level designer, assistant game designer and tester, preferably someone who know NiD's gameplay well
- optionally, a music composer (else I'll just use music from the games)

Some more information about the game:
The game will include 3 levels and 4 mares per level. There are no bosses for now and I don't think I'll add any.
Items implemented so far are Blue Chips, Star Chips and Rings. I may add enemies and other items (especially level-specific items), but I have to discuss this with the team first.
For the levels, I'd like to keep the same "blocky" layout as Reala's Nightmare, because even if it's not good aesthetically, collision detection is much easier to implement that way (and has already been implemented).
There are no kids, you play only as NiGHTS. Kids wouldn't be interesting to play as in 2D anyway. That means if you run out of time, you lose directly.
So far the only move is the Drill Dash. I may implement the Paraloop if I can.

That's about it. If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or if you want to be part of the team, then please say so!

Tales of Monkey Island

08 July 2009 - 11:01 AM

Anyone heard of Monkey Island? It's a series of adventure games full of humor, taking place in the Caribbean during the age of piracy.

The 5th game in the series is Tales of Monkey Island by Telltale Games. It's an episodic game in five episodes. The first episode was released yesterday (to download on PC, and it should be released on WiiWare later).
So I downloaded it. Because it's just an episode, it was fairly short (took me 4 hours to complete it), but it was really enjoyable. Though the controls are a bit weird and take some time to get used to (compared to traditional point-and-click games), but still, I had a great time.

I'm not expecting anyone else here to have played it since it's just been released, but, are there any other Monkey Island fans here? Anyone planning to play this game? Apparently there's a free demo if you want to try.

Intelligence of the characters

Yeah, another speculation topic, because I think it's fun to speculate and share theories.

So, how intelligent do you think the various inhabitants of the Night Dimension are?

We know that Wizeman, Owl and the first-level marens (NiGHTS and Reala) are basically as intelligent as humans and can talk, so there's no need to discuss about them (but you can if you want to).
So, let's take a look at the other characters.

Second-level Nightmarens
We don't know much about their levels of intelligence, but I think there's a large range between them. I mean I don't expect Cerberus to be smarter than a real dog, but others like Jackle or Donbalon may be able to talk. Jackle actually talks during the game, doesn't he?
Though Nightmarens have been stated to be crazy (especially Jackle) so maybe they don't have human intelligence, but just a bit below.

Third-level Nightmarens
These are technically less intelligent than the second-levels; I would say they're like animals (and not particularly smart animals), but I know fans sometimes portray them as being able to talk as well. The Goodles may be a bit smarter since they can understand orders (though you could say the same thing about the Ideya-stealing marens in NiD, but maybe that's just their instinct); but they're apparently unable to talk, despite their big mouths.

Nightopians
They seem to act like young children. I would put them above the third-levels. The weird thing about the pians is that, even if they can't talk, Owl is able to understand them. You know, sometimes he says thing like "the Nightopians said NiGHTS is in that cage" or "the Nightopians said there's something shiny over there". So maybe they're more intelligent than they seem...

Octopaw
I assume he's unable to talk, if only because he doesn't have a mouth. He doesn't seem intelligent at all, all he does is hiding and fleeing.

Awakers
These are a bit more complicated. While they don't do much either (they just appear and chase you), I tend to see them as rather intelligent guys. Maybe even talking. Even if they have no mouth. I think I'm contradicting myself now

Alarm Egg
Does he count as a character? I've always seen him as some kind of machine.

So, what do you think?

Something about Wizeman

16 February 2009 - 11:14 PM

I'm sorry if that's not the right place for this topic, I'm not sure where to put this.

It's about Wizeman's page on the main site. Particularly this part:

(Official JP NiD) The ruler of Nightmare-Wizeman, a Visitor deprived of any Ideya, had begun advancing to try and extinguish Nightopia! "If all Ideya are lost, Nightopia will disappear... And my Nightmare will rule over all!'
Wizeman was the first intelligent life in the Night Dimension and the creator of Nightmare.
He created Nightmarens by using his own power. His mysterious power scares Nightmarens. But NiGHTS refuses his order, so he confines NiGHTS in an Ideya palace

It's the bit about Wizeman being a Visitor deprived of Ideya that bothers me, because I'm pretty sure that's wrong.

As far as I know, this text comes from a translation of NiD's Japanese official story, which is also on the website (here, in the section "the plot"); and the original text can be found on NiD's official website.

I'm far from being an expert in Japanese, and I don't know who made the translation, but I'm almost sure the original text says that Wizeman was destroying Nightopia by taking Ideya from Visitors, and doesn't says that he was a Visitor himself.

I know that it''s not really important but I just wanted to point that out. But feel free to correct me if you think I'm wrong.
