A little WILD Horror Story

So, sup guys? You all know WILD, right? Developed by Dr.Stephan LaBerge? The act of staying concious in the transition between wake and sleep? Yes? Brilliant.

Well, I'm sitting here in France last night, in a room converted to a shrine to a dead boy, you know, as normal teenagers do at night, when I thought "I've been asleep for several hours and can't get back to sleep... hmm... I'll give this WILD lark a try, I haven't done it three years or so" and I did.

Now, I like WILD, it's quite a trip. By far the hardest lucid dreaming technique, but for you hard work you get a facinating light show, strange halucinations and sleep paralysis to boot before you get lucid. It's like a free drug if you will.

So, I go along; happy as can be, then I reach sleep paralysis, always fun. At which point I get some fun ilagery, a number (34 I believe, acompanied by a childs whispers about counting to a high number) appears and forms the dreamscape, what seems to be a childs bedroom, everything is all rustic and looked like something from a fairy tale. The moment I tried to stand yo to go explore I felt an intense pain, unlike anything I'd ever felt before and what seemed to be an inability to move. The pain continued for several minutes until I just had to wake myself up, cue a false awakening, which I picked up on and was suddenly sucked back into the WILD scenario with no way to fight it. The number and whispers came back and the dreamscape formed again, same thing happened as bafore. About five times.

Finally, on the last time I broke out of the bed and jummped around a bit, it was just nice to move again and not feel pain. Then the REM period ended, waste of a good lucid dream I think. Oh well, I'll try again tonight.

So, anyone else had any bad WILD experiences? They tend end in bad LDs for me, but others swear by them.

Also, I'm thinking about updating my tutorial topic with something on WILD, who wants?

I haven't lucid dreamed in awhile (need to start doing the techniques again.... got lazy XP;; ).

I did have a successful WILD once, but, I forgot I was dreaming and ended up having a normal dream D8!

Oh, and, I'd explode with the joy if you updated your tutorial 8D!

Actually I think you should just update it, I don't care on what... WILD's as good a subject as any though!

I'm not very good at lucid dreaming, period, but there have been pretty close to having a WILD dream. I usually start asleep when something wakes me up a bit. I'm in that transitional period when I'm half asleep and I'm aware of that, but then I botch it up and just fall back asleep. I have to hand it to you guys who can lucid dream fairly well. It's tricky business.

Yikes... sleep paralysis...

I didn't know that you could experience pain while you're lucid. I though that it only takes place in non-lucid dreams, but heck still, more power to the lucid dreamers.

I'm a very unique case when it comes to dreaming, because I've always had a sleep schedule thats anything but normal. I've slept 23 hours straight on a few occasions, and at one point in my life, could sleep a whole day, stay up for two, then sleep again for around 20 hours, and repeat.

I experience WILDs constantly, and I get sleep paralysis, but its not like what other people describe. I don't really get that uncomfortable foot asleep feeling. I cant move, but I'm perfectly relaxed. Maybe its because I haven't really attempted to move while having the crazy half awake dreams and abstract thoughts that don't make any sense. Maybe it isn't a true WILD, or maybe I'm just weird.

But another odd thing is, nearly 80% of my dreams are lucid. There's just something inside me that knows I'm dreaming, but I rarely have control of the dream. Often times I don't really desire control, but am happy just watching it like a movie. Sure there are things in dreams that trigger me to recognize its unrealistic, but I usually already know I'm dreaming.

I feel bad, most people try so hard for things like WILD and lucid dreams. These things I've always assumed were perfectly normal and not rare at all.

Man, you are one lucky kid. XD

I barely get any sleep, weekdays or weekends, regardless of how much I want to. My life is just way too hectic to fit in 8 hours every night.
Even so, I dream every night and try to go lucid every time. Unfortunately, I'm always so fishing tired I fall asleep before I can accomplish anything. ^^; Oh well.

Plus I have absolutely no logic in my dreams. As a result, I only go lucid at random, and whan I say random do I ever mean it. I could be walking down a perfectly normal street and suddenly realize, "hey! I'm dreaming!" It's pretty funny at times.
In a related paradox, I cannot control my lucid dreams. On the contrary, I have fantastic control (at least over my own abilities) when I'm oblivious to the fact.

I have a couple dreams up on my deviantART account if you're curious, as my dream jounal hasn't appeared here on the forums yet.

On a final note... any tips for wannabe lucids like me, Soyo?

I wish I did. But like I said, its something that happened to me before I even knew exactly what it was. My mind is always going 100mph at any given moment. It makes it really hard for me to fall asleep, even when I'm totally exhausted. All I can really say is try the tips other people give, the whole talking to yourself before falling asleep thing and reality checks. Other than that, I think it'd probably really help to get more in touch with your subconscious as a whole, in and out of dreams.

I feel for you on the whole sleep issue though. I only get to sleep 8 hours or more on the weekend. On the weekend I sleep an average of 15 hours :x but during the week I sleep an average of like 5.

Back on subject, if you fall back asleep really easy in the morning.. one thing I highly recommend trying, is setting your alarm clock like 40 minutes before you really have to get up, and then hitting the sleep button and going back to sleep 4 times. My clock sleeps for like 9 minutes or something weird when I hit the sleep button. But I go to sleep after each time I hit it, and I have little mini dreams. Since my mind starts going again when I wake up and see what time it is, It makes me have very vivid dreams. They tend to be easy to remember too, since you wake up right after them.

I've been trying to do that, actually, and on my successful efforts it has worked. Unfortunately it's very hard for me to do; I'm so fishing tired in the mornings I'm afraid of sleeping through my bus pickup. XD That would not be good!

Either way I'll continue to try my best with this. Thanks for the help, though! I'll have to keep you posted!

  • Interests:I love anime and games! I collect manga more than I do anime 'cause it's cheaper, though, and cosplay from time to time. Hopefully I'll have a decent Jackle costume done in time for Nan Desu Kan this year XD. I also like yaoi, DDR, um...pandas...and yaoi. I don't like mainstream anime much though; most of it isn't very good anyway....
My snooze goes off every 5 minutes, not long enough to accomplish much...

Beside the point, I've yet to experience lucidity in my dreams *sob*. I've been trying to keep a dream journal to get my dream recollection up to par, but no luck due to school and rushing around blindly in the mornings. I don't even get time to try to remember what my dreams were about, never mind write them down.

Surprisingly, the majority of my dreams are realistic, but end with a horror-fantasy bang. I think this is why I'm having trouble with lucid dreaming; when I finally realize I'm asleep, the dream's over. I got close at one point, though; usually when I dream I don't remember that I'm a squee-ing fangirl. Well, in one dream I died at the end, and right before I did, I remembered wanting to fly like NiGHTS, as a ghost. I've never remembered things as specific as that before.

Anyways...would love more info on WILD, yesh. And that's a scary LD, that it is. Almost makes me not want to pursue lucidity.
