One of my favorite discussions about the subconscious is the symbology of water. Most of what I've read says that water is two things to the dreamer--sexuality and/or the unknown. Whenever I dream about water--lakes, puddles, rain, oceans, whatever--I try to keep this in mind.

I was just curious: how do other people deal/function in water during their dreams? Sink or swim? (My experiences, personally, are available for the asking.)

I don't often have dreams with water in them, but when I do, I'm usually trapped underwater, yet...I always seem to be able to breathe.

I've only had one underwater dream, and I was able to breath completely.
Any other time, I can swim in it just fine. *shrug*

Was the feeling underwater--while breathing of course--one of relaxation? Panic? Peace? Anxiety?

Panic at first, because I keep thinking that if I breathe in, I'll drown. Eventually my body decides to take a huge gasp, and I find that I'm taking in air instead of water, so the panic turns into relief.

I swear I was a fish in a past life. I knew how to swim before I knew how to walk...no joke.

Edit: Oh yeah, kudos on the Bill Cosby reference.

Being in water has usually been a bad experience for me. Flying over it, I'm okay. I try to avoid going into it, though, especially if there are creatures in it. I tend to be attacked, and everyone knows how hard it is to run away when you're in water. Though my subconscious has lately been lessening my fears with some nicer water dreams.

The question is sink or swim? Then for me it's drown :) .

Whenever I dream of water, it either involves me being out on a boat during a storm or falling in and sinking for a while before I panic and drown (that blasted "hurry up" music from the old Sonic games doesn't help much either). So both in dreams and reality, I try to stay on land as much as possible.

Whenever I dream of water, it's just sort of there, like scenery. Once I was on a dock talking, another had a mote in the house. Nothing really important, just there.

Sink or swim eh?
How about walk on it?

I kid you not, every dream I have that involves a body of water, be it a puddle, or a ocean, I always seem to walk on it. I often wonder what that means, and I cannot find my dream dictionary in this whole house.

I very rarely dream about water (I can't even the last time I did!), but when I do, it seems I'm either swimming or just floating there...I don't recall being on boats or other floating things. When I swim, I either tread the surface or swim no more than roughly 5 feet below it.

I've been getting more comfortable with the water. The last two dreams when I was submerged in water I was able to breathe anyways because I was lucid and convinced myself that I could. :)

I almost never see water in my dreams... Course then again I have lived in a desert for the vast majority of my life. When it is there it is like a swimming pool or something. I can only think of one instance when it was used as anything more than a background, and that is when I jumped into my pool to hide from a giant rampaging monster. It worked well and the water acted as water.

In dreams, I'm afraid of water. That is, when there is water in my dreams.
