And after a couple false starts, this is what I got:
The table is for cardreading, as I had the idea of making a comic based on his predictions of other poeple.
I had the mirror card idea when I was making this.
Why bother having x number of cards in your deck when they can just reflect what another person sees in them?
And for some strange reason, I've always imagined Jackle having blue hair as a contradiction to the red/orange/yellow he usually wears. I've tried to mimic the hat in the hair design to a degree.

You don't.
You just wait for inspiration to hit and open whatever art program you use.
Like I said, it took a couple tries before I got something coherent.
Now that I think on it, I may try to make a Wizeman of some sort sometime later.
I have this crazy idea of putting him in Mugen.

A.k.a. it's drawing with pixels; I've never truly managed it, either. *is guilty of cut-and-slap-togethers and just blatant recolors* ^^;

Spriting can be really fun. It's a good idea to start with shapes and then build up the shading. I find it helps to build a pallet for each colour you're using before you start that. It can also really help to do a sketch first and base your sprite on that. There are some fantastic spriting tutorials out there and it's worth looking into if you're interested (especially to help you get the hang of things like smoothing your lines or softening them though doing 'anti aliasing' yourself; which is especially handy on eyes and small details)
Also, if you're going to animate it, as soon as you've got the basics down it's a good idea to think in components, so like do the body, head, arms and legs separately as it will make things much easier in the long run.
