#101272 The Mantle uses the exact same drum beat as This Is How We Do It by Montell J...

Posted by Afro Thunder on 13 December 2017 - 05:09 PM in NiGHTS chit-chat

I should point out that the drum rhythm is the same, but they're not sampling the same drumbeat. "The Mantle" sampled Joe Tex's "Papa Was Too" for its drums, while Montell's drums and overall base for the song came from Slick Rick's "Childeren's Story". They sound similar, but they're not the same sample at all.

And since we're on the subject of samples, NiGHTS, in comparison to Sonic and a lot of other games of the time, used very little sampling. However, there's two songs from Journey of Dreams that do use samples: the "Lavender" and "Sandal Wood" mixes of "Ai-Di-La" and the "Laybrinth Guide" mix of "Crystal Choir" uses the drumbreak from The Honeydrippers' "Impeach the President", a classic funk break used in many hip hop tracks, but is instead used here to give the songs a bit of a trip-hop/downtempo vibe.

And if we wanna talk sampling in-game songs (barring the recurring use of "Dreams Dreams" in several tracks), "NiGHTS & Reala" uses elements from the normal mix of "Take the Snow Train".

Yes, I'm a music nerd, but it comes with being a musician. Sue me. :P

#101269 NiGHTS Into Street Dreams...

Been a while, ain't it? :P I've been working on the Street Dreams project behind the scenes, but I got something small to share. The video team at Jet Set Radio Live asked me to create some winter-themed bumps for them. I sampled "When the Night Falls" from Journey of Dreams to get the right vibe for it.

I hope you guys like it! :)

#101140 A NiGHTS Remix: Another Dreams

Posted by Afro Thunder on 20 February 2017 - 07:01 AM in NiGHTS chit-chat

Come to think of it this may be like, the one NiGHTS related album I don't have in any form..

khinsider has a digital download for it, but physical copies are extremely rare. Only 1 person on Discogs has the album, and if it's anywhere else, it's probably ridiculously overpriced.

This was probably posted here a loooong time ago, but I just found it by chance while browsing Sega Retro.

Not much info about it, but it's pretty straightforward: It's a NiGHTS remix album released exclusively in Japan in mid-1997 as a companion to the game and official soundtrack. It even has a  snippet of the acapella version of "Dreams Dreams"  and a remix of "Know Thyself!", even though it never made it into the  actual game. :P

It's a pretty good album, although most of the remixes have very little resemblance to their original versions. A lot of it is very House and New Jack Swing influenced.

I've went and posted another demo on SoundCloud, simply titled "Stage 1 Demo". There's not a whole lot to this one. Just some pads and bells from the intro until  I can figure out what else I want to do with this beat.
