Photo Render

08 January 2008 - 05:35 AM

I took a major vacation from the forum because of school, and particularly because of this particular project. In my illustration class we needed to photograph a still life, create a story for it, then render it photo-realistically in acrylic (8"x8").

Here is my render:

And here is the photo reference:

I'll get to the story for the piece later, but I can tell you rendering it was a HARD thing to do. ^^;; It dries so fast! But I'd rather work with acrylic than gouache, as I can never trust it not to lift off after drying. @_@

I'd really like a few tips on how to improve the wine glass in the lower right, and the brandy flask in the upper left. Those drove me up a wall. Comments and critiques welcome, and encouraged.

The House of Leaves

10 November 2007 - 08:22 PM

I cannot begin to describe my experience with Mark Z. Danielewski's novel The House of Leaves. Describing the book would take all day, but I'll break it down: its a narrative, told through the filter of up to 3 different people, about a strange house that is somehow bigger (mind-bogglingly so) inside than it is out.

Besides the story of this house itself, and the people who live in it, the book is also disturbingly close to reality by mentioning that the novel is based on a movie made about said house, and that it was a doctumentary seen by many real famous people (Stephen King is one). The line between the story and the reader becomes blurred, obscured, and sometimes it disregards that line and goes on its merry way.

If you see this book in a store and flip randomly in the middle, you'd note that the text itself (and footnotes) changes; the nature of the text changes with the narrative, until you're literally turning the book around in circles trying to read it. I actually got motion sick trying to read part of it. This is a novel that messes with you, just short of physically grabbing you and becoming a part of your life. I heartily recommend it to anyone in search of read that goes beyond simply entertaining you; it makes you think.

*Reading Rainbow theme* But you don't have to take my word for it! ^^

And my first official post will be: artwork!

Recently, i've been going through a NiGHTS kick (wonder y? myuhuhu), and thus a lot of NiGHTS related artwork has been tunneling through me.

First off: Paper NiGHTS (forgive me, I am not good w/ linking thumbs and the such on forums...gimme a lil time to figger it out?)

I made it in papermaking class, by dying paper pulp (most of which was cooked and rinsed by myself and other people in my class), then drying it on plexiglas (you can dry on wood; by drying on plexiglass, one side of the paper becomes shiny and smooth, rather than on wood where it dries w/ a woody texture). The vest and the arms were the hardest part, as the paper was really thick and I was hand tearing it (to keep a consistent rouych edge that the rest of the paper had). T_T My fingers got really red. Its held together w/ rubber cement.

I like how it came out, tho the eyes are a little spooky. ^^ Its hanging on my door, looming and leering at those who pass by my room to go to the bathroom. XD
