I fear the sequel is going to fail

I know some of you may hate me for starting this thread... I'm sorry... Does anyone else here feel the same way as me? After hearing some details on the gameplay, I'm beginning to lose interest. I wish I never got rid of my Sega Saturn and the games I had for it. I hope the Saturn games will be on the Wii Virtual Console. If it does, the original NiGHTS must need to be one of those games. I miss playing it. I'd rather relive the good times I had with the original game than play the sequel that may turn out to be a failure. First Sega has ruined Sonic, now they're going to ruin NiGHTS. I feel scared.

First of all: Dude, it's only a video game. I know it was an outstanding video game and I'm sure you have a lot of fond memories from playing it, but NiD and its sequel are nothing more than software programs designed for entertainment.

Secondly, these thoughts are very common among fans when a sequel/adaptation is coming. I saw this frequently in the run-up to Transformers.

;)

Ah, screw it. Well over half the board I frequented said something along the lines of what you're saying. Vitriol and confusion were everywhere in those days. Transformers had production leaks every other week and each one prompted a whole new wave of debate. With every day came a new thought, a new debate, a new question not yet asked, a new statement from the PTB that would push someone one way or another -- a new reason to doubt or believe in the movie. I myself said a few times "(This or that) isn't gonna work onscreen." And guess what? Pretty much the entire board converted after the movie launched.

Another example: How about Casino Royale? If you missed the controversy over Daniel Craig's casting as Bond, I'm deeply sorry you were in a coma for so long. Fans from all over the world objected to the casting. Hell, the entire country of Britain discredited Craig at every possible and impossible opportunity. But guess what? The movie was a smash hit.

My point is plain and simple: DON'T WORRY!!! WE... ARE... FINE!!! Does that mean the game will be good? I don't know. But I do know that there is a surprisingly minimal amount of controversy surrounding this game. I see no reason to believe that the sequel will suck. But even if it does, remember:

It's only a video game.

For movies, I don't worry if a certain movie may turn out good or not unless I watch it myself. I don't make a big deal about movies because if I don't like how a movie turns out after seeing it in theaters, I would simply not buy it on DVD and also be thankful that I'm out only like what? $7? For video games... These days they are usually worth $50-$60 and if I don't like how it turns out, I wasted my money. I think I may have to wait and see what news sources will say when they review it. If JoD receives lots of positive reviews and claim that it's great, I may consider buying it. If it gets lots of negative reviews, I'm not buying it. Mixed reviews? I'll rent it first to see if it's good or not.

I do have trust issues with Sonic Team at this point. I'm going to be very antsy when I see the reviews for the game. It's an odd feeling; I can't imagine it being bad, and I wholly anticipate owning it and playing it with joy, but in the back of my head Sonic Team's recent failures with Sonic continue to gnaw at me and pray for NiGHTS's safe return.

Given all we know, it's a safe assumption. I love how it's launching the same time as Mario Galaxy and will no-doubt be over-shadowed again, this time for good reason. Most probably the most promising looking game ever vs the least promising. At least JoD has no chance of disappointing (touch wood), that's one way to look at it.

Sales is another thing.. heh, I couldn't care less as long as the game is good ;) But really, I think Sonic Team did themselves a disservice by hardly having anything to show at E3. G4's stupid coverage barely even mentioned the game at all. I noticed the game on the 'top ten' radar briefly during E3, but since then beyond the fanbase I'm not really sure how many people are really interested. But if Sega finally releases some more of the game, interest may take off again.

But it would be a bit of a shame if the game is awesome, yet still no one buys it. Relatively speaking. It'd be ridiculous, really. But a LOT more people own a Wii than a Saturn. So here's to being optimistic.

As I said, it'll be overshadowed by Galaxy. Sega would do best releasing this game in February.

It's an industry norm to release strange games that aren't expecting great sales in that month. Katamari was launched in the EU as was Shadow of the Colossus at that time. It's a while after christmas and people are bored with the games they got and are searching for something new and interesting. Sales of quirky games are always best that months.

Fun fact - Often called Weirduary in the industry.

Hm.. good observation. Guess they can't resist the promise of the holiday season though.

Heh, really? Interesting...

* from what I've heard though, not even Katamari and SotC sold that well initially.. guess it goes to show inventive games slip under the radar no matter how good they are.

They were delayed beyond belief in the EU and we only got the second Katamari game. By the time they came out everyone who'd care knew about them.

But yes, February seems to be the way to go. A few months extra development time might make this train wreck a car crash at least...

The part with the orb throwing has me irked too.. I don't know why they would think we'd want to play that part.. wandering around as the kids in the first game had its small thrills, but the core is playing as the Maren.. flying around as NiGHTS again hopefully makes up for whatever non-flying crap we have to do as the kids.

You'll have to be more specific than that.

Quality is objective. It means different things to different people. Do you mean the quality of the graphics? The gameplay? The story? The controls? The effort put into development? The time taken to debug the software? Replay value?

For my part, I don't think we know enough about the game to start worrying. All we have are a few brief videos, a handful of screenshots, some magazine clippings and rumors flying every which way. That's not a finished product and it isn't remotely a game.

I'm going to suggest what I suggested to my TF fanboy friends. It fell on deaf ears there and I'm sure nobody here will listen, but this absolutely needs to be said:

RESERVE YOUR JUDGMENT!

Be patient. Wait until we've seen something that actually resembles the final product. Wait until we have solid information.

So we've heard that the kids may have some projectile-throwing to do, but we don't know the context. We don't know how much of the gameplay will revolve around that mechanic. We don't know if it's for combat or puzzle-solving or both. We just don't know enough about it.

WE KNOW NOTHING!! Be patient, live with it, keep your eyes and ears peeled, and don't start worrying until there's something to be worried about.

If I could butt in here, I had a friend who bad-mouthed JoD with rather out-dated reasons. After I e-mailed her and discussed, she changed her opinion. I think it's too early to judge, imo.

I agree that its way too early to judge but its all the "What if...?" questions thats got everyone worried so its probably best not to mention any "what if...?" questions.
Many people have different opinions on how this game would be the best and I'm sure that all of us will be disappointed with at least one aspect of this game however, I am sure that there is many things that will make this game great. I mean they do have some of the original creators working on it still don't they?

Oh man the suspense is killing me

Well I know one reason the game might not sell too good. I'm mature about things like this but a lot of other people (mainly us males) will think the game is gay or girly seeing as how people shape their opinion on things based on society's teachings. A game with bright colors to quite a few people is considered @*@%^ or childish and thus will not want to buy it or even play it for that matter and whoever owns it gets clowned just for having it.

I've been made fun of for just liking these listed games:

NiGHTS into Dreams
Katamari Damacy
Loco Roco
The Legend of Zelda series

Hmm... I know how you feel about that >_<. NiGHTS isn't gay, and we all know that 8D!

However, I notice hardcore gamers all love the games you mentioned. A lot of hardcore gamers are looking excited to NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. Katamari Damancy was a hit with reviewers and gamers everywhere.

Hardcore Gamers loved Loco Roco's atmosphere and gameplay as well, and the same with Legend of Zelda.

Just ignore people who call those things gay. 'Cause, all 4 of them are not gay. They're very awesome, in fact 8D! It's the way society sees things, yah. If we were in the 70s.... NiGHTS would be the mascot of our generation 8D! NO KIDDING.

"Trippy colors dude! I feel like I'm on acid again!" :(

Anywho, I know the feeling about NiGHTS ridicule. Many general gamers would think he is gay because well...their minds are pretty closed. However my boyfriend is a hardcore gamer and he doesn't like NiGHTS either. He thinks the gameplay is pretty dang good. But NiGHTS himself is really weird looking to him. I guess some males get really disturbed when something seems gay and they are not. Guess its kinda like how I feel about lesbians. I don't mind gay guys...but I get a little creeped out when I am around lesbians.

Hopefully many hardcore gamers will open their minds to NiGHTS and buy the new game. Who know...maybe it will become really really big. I mean, heck how many of you thought Kingdom Hearts was going to become a greatest hit? Raise of hand...anyone...yeah...

Anyway, err... I thought KH was going to be a hit. Ironically, I soon fell out of Kingdom Hearts after playing a lot of it. NOW I'M BACK IN IT 8D!

Yeah. XD.

I rarely get teased about NiGHTS, because I tend to not really tell others about him/her except close friends who I know won't make fun of me. The ones who do tease me often play the Actiony games, or don't generally play Video Games.

If you do tell someone about and they think its funny, tease them about it because they are really missing out on a good game. :(
Anyone that can judge a game just like that isn't a true hardcore gamer.
You need to try it out first before you can saying anything bad about it.

I can't believe we have such a topic.
REASONS JoD won't FAIL: Iizuka is back
The music guy from NiGHTS is back.
It's on the Wii
Gameplay is intact.
They barely changed the bosses
Visuals are tight
It's a simple game, it doesn't need as much dev. time, its getting plenty
History is repeating itself, because it will no doubt be awesome yet overlooked by other games like before
Reala is back
Ability to mute VA, which we're not even sure we'll need

On another note. Shadow the Hedgehog and Heroes aren't as bad as people make them out to be. Not as good as SA2, but I blame the lack of A-life, which JoD will have. At least heroes allowed you to collect emeralds.

I haven't heard anywhere that there is a gurantee of the Nightopian A-Life system.
And I hated collecting the emeralds in Sonic Heroes. It was way to hard. Or maybe it was because I had the PS2 version.

PS2 version was problemed. How can they NOT include A-life? Why else would Maren leave balls flying around when you hit them? Iizuka went through the whole dodgy ordeal of "We're currently investigating all options", and I found this: http://www.sega.com/games/game_temp.php?game=NiGHTS
Mystical creatures seperated from the nightmarish monsters, what do you think those could be? Albeit they may have created a new system for pians because of the Wii's power.
Another thing. About the whole idea behind this thread.

That's not unusual. Except for the superlative Smash Bros. official site, I find that official sites are always inferior to fansites. You know why? Because the official sites only tell you what the PTB want you to know. There are filters and they are tight. On fansites, there are no filters. You hear everything remotely related to the property in question -- both legitimate and otherwise -- and you can discuss anything in whatever terms you want.

I'll take this site over anything on the internet that Sega has to offer, thank you.

Those people who disrespect you for playing those games are nothing but assholes. I want to play those games for fun and also getting my money's worth, I don't care how it looks.

Well, Curiosity Inc. has given me some good points. I'm not turning down on this game yet. Just like him, I too did reserve my judgment for the live-action TF movie before it came out. I've already watched it on the week it was released and I loved the live-action TF movie. I guess I'll do the same for JoD.

Indeed.

I've never heard anyone call the Zelda games gay. If such people exist, frak them. Calling the Zelda games gay is grounds for confiscation of all video-game related items. You blaspheme Zelda or Link, you forfeit your right to pick up a controller ever again. That's it.

I would also like to add Pokemon to the list. I went through a Pokemon phase during my last days in elementary school. And while I was playing it on my Game Boy, hand to God, some strange kid walked past me and said "Pokemon's gay, you know that, right?" and kept walking. Didn't even break pace.

It's a cheap shot. It's cheap, bigoted, crass, ignorant and just plain rude. In fact, I'd say it isn't intended to insult the game itself as much as the people who play the game.

A good story is a good story and a good game is a good game, regardless of setting, design or popularity.

That's the reasoning for teenagers I know calling Resident Evil Gay.

Most idiots who do stuff like that really are just trying to put you down, not the game. Just ignore them. Or tell them to go 'F*** themselves' and RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN.

Thankfully I am in college now and I don't have anyone ridiculing me on what I play. :(

However, I do get nervous when I tell people I have Pokemon Dimond. I play it cause its fun and there are some Pokemon that are really cool on there. At least I am not playing the card game or trying to collect all 493...

On another note, I do remember when I showed some of my friends in high school pictures of NiGHTS. Only one of them palyed a little bit of video games, the others were all anime fans. SO they were very, scepticle. Fortonatly only one of them voiced her true opinion. ("He looks fruity.") The others stayed silent. It freaks some people out to see someone in purple tights. Its also hard to show great gameplay to someone who doesn't play much video games. I tried to show my friend NiGHTS into dreams...and she was very bad at it. So bad that she wanted to play Sonic Riders instead. BLASPHOMY!!!! I hope the new game will appeal to a wider range of audience so that I don't have a friend asking to play promotional racing game.

Speaking of which, I DO know a friend who collected all 493. :3.

I did a project in me Spanish class involving NiGHTS. I kept the whole thing secret. A lot of people just stared at NiGHTS, and were kinda clueless. They were all wondering who 'NiGHTS' was, anyway, because his name is in my AIM s/n. None of them bothered to read the description about him, anyway. They were all busy worshiping their favorite sports star, or a politician, or movie star, or something other that no one gives a sh!t about :/.

I don't really understand why people are like that, yet I am -_-. Anything that see that is 'colorful' is automatically 'fruity' to them, or something like that. (At least, where I am. ) As long as it's dark, or mystical and dark, it's not 'fruity' apparently. It's really sad that people are always too quick to judge things.

Grr.... >.<! Sonic Riders isn't really all that fun after awhile, either. It was fun at first, but it just got frustrating for me. I completed the whole game, deleted my save, and started a new save and cheated just so I could play as NiGHTS :|. Then deleted that save as well. The only reason I even RENTED it was for our lil' purple jester. It was fun, but it could've been a bit more fun imo.

Seems Sonic, Mario, and Crash are the only characters that some people even bother to play... and Sonic and Crash's games aren't the best anymore >____<. We all know Sonic's over-commericalized games, and Crash is getting stranger and stranger after Naughty Dog stopped making games for him. IMO, anyhow.

Err... back on track, Imma thinking the sequel might do well. Gamestop bothered to make a poster for him; I'm pretty sure most hardcore gamers love NiGHTS like they love Sonic or Crash.

Thankfully I am in college now and I don't have anyone ridiculing me on what I play. -_-

Sonic Riders is fun for about a month then I got bored with it. NiGHTS into Dreams is awesome any day of the year and I never got bored with it. Then again I never had the chance to play it often as I never owned it but every moment I was with it I cherished it. It sounds like the case of when people suck at video games they say the game sucks and rate it low only because they don't know what they are doing. I've done this plenty of times. Hell I still do but I continue to play anyway because I feel I'm wrong.

Who in gods name has the time for that?! I barly get a few hours of games a week during college.

I don't think it is so much the color that puts people off when they see NiGHTS. Its the fact a character wearing tight purple close, girly poses and figure mixed with a pretty face, yet missing importan female features therfore making it possible to be a guy makes people think of a homosexul. The average person is scared of something that doesn't have a specified gender and therfore they call it gay.

Hopefully most hardcore gamers will put their wordly views aside and see the game for what it really is. However the long eyelashes don't help...

I personally think that the game will be a great success. I know I'm looking forward to getting it.
