The name Wizeman baffled me, it seemed to be a reference to archetype of the "wise man". But what, exactly do they have to with each other? Surely the wise man is a positive figure?
After a bit of digging, the archetype, and indeed Wizeman himself, seems more accurately referred to as Senex.
The senex is an archetype in Jungian psychology, roughly translated as old man or wise man,and seems to be the male equivalent of the "Great mother" figure; a father figure.
But the good senex, the guiding wise-man, is just one side of the coin. The senex is also bad, though rather little is said about this aspect of the senex, the connection between it and the Greek god Chronus is interesting enough. The only example I can really find with good elaboration on the negative senex is this book, though Ive come across a few references across the internet that use the term "negative senex", "devouring senex" or "devouring father" , anything beyond a fleeting mention is very uncommon.
To begin with I was somewhat apprehensive about labelling Wizeman as an antifather (at least outside of headcanon), because it didn't even seem to be concept (as opposed to the anti-mother), it is...it's just a very underused one, double standards cough and now I'm pretty much convinced.
The name Wizeman still seems a bit odd to me though, looking back on what I've learned it seems to almost be an overly-literal translation of "Senex" though it seems likely that Wizeman is a man of many names.
It does make me wonder yet again, if it's still canon, how Wizeman became inhuman, which I kind of assume still is canon.
And indeed, if there's a father... is there a mother? Not as complimentary but as opposite, a mother of Nightopia, as I believe was a scrapped concept. I always assumed that visitors were the powers that be and that Wizeman was an extreme freak of nature (or supernature) that had to lose his humanity to get where he is, but thoughts on all of this are very much welcome.
