I got a game called Journey last week or maybe it was two weeks ago. I'd been following it since I first read about it in the PlayStation magazine. It's made by thatgamecompany, the creators of flOw and Flower. The plot requires some interpretation but from first glance it appears to be about an unnamed humanoid in a red cloak who's trying to reach a mountain. It sounds simple but this particular journey has our main character going through a desert with beating winds, friendly creatures, and some not so friendly creatures. The soundtrack is atmospheric and really enhances the experience. If you've played other thatgamecompany games then you'll definitely know how well they incorporate music into their environments.

Sure you can dash through the game in maybe an hour and a half or so but I found it a bit more enjoyable to actually explore as much as the developers allowed me to. You're a bit limited at first because you start off without a scarf and scarfs are what you need to fly but as you collect these white, floating symbols your scarf begins to grow more, allowing you to fly just a bit farther every time. At times I wished I could fly infinitely but for the most part I was content with just running.

There is multiplayer but it's not quite like other PS3 games. From what I've seen so far, you won't be able to message a friend and ask if they want to take an online journey with you. After the first area you'll be able to meet up with a random journeyer like yourself and things will move on from there. It's a bit upsetting that I can't get my brother to play with me but it's also not so bad. To me it feels like partnering you up with a random gamer removes certain social barriers. You can't communicate with a headset or a keyboard so there's no language barriers. You can't tell what country the person is from so there's no conflict there. And you won't know the person's name until you've both made it to the very end. It's very anonymous but you'll feel a certain way about your partner based on their actions rather than how they talk or where they're from.

If you're into the more atmospheric and exploration type of games then I think you might enjoy this game. The price is at $15 the last time I checked. Now, even though I was hyped up for this game I wasn't very excited about the price. I got it anyway though because I love thatgamecompany's work and I couldn't stand waiting for this too much longer. If you want to wait for this to drop maybe five or ten bucks then I won't blame you. I feel it was worth the price tag though as I've gone on the same journey maybe three or four times now and may even go at it again a little later.

One thing I really like about this game and even Flower is that they both reminded me of NiGHTS. From what I gathered, Flower was about the dreams that flowers living in urban environments have about their world's conditions and both of these games reminded me how much freedom there was in flight even if you couldn't fly infinitely in Journey. In fact, Journey often had me wishing there was a NiGHTS game where you could fly in more of a 3D space rather than a 2.5D space.

TL;DR Short version(here's a beta video)

So I'm not the only one who got a NiGHTS vibe. (Hi, I haven't been on this forum for a very. long. time.)

When eventually I get a PS3, this game is right on top of the list of things to buy.

Never heard of this game before this, but it looks very interesting. Unfortunately, I don't own a PS3, but it looks like my reasons for buying one are beginning to add up with this.

Thank you very much for the short preview, it really set the base here. The game looks gorgeous. I haven't actually heard about it until you've brought it up now, I believe. However, that sort of open area-type environment can lead to a lot of invisible walls, can it not? Unless it's sort of like the Gerudo Desert in Ocarina of Time, that fades you back on track when you go too astray.

Regardless, I do lack a PS3 in my gaming system group, so I do need to get one. Maybe I'll get this game with it. Also, the soundtrack does integrate very well and, more than that, so does the ambiance sound. Quite nice.

I completely forgot about the Gerudo Desert. You are right about the invisible walls. There are some but I mostly experienced something similar to the Gerudo Desert. When you get too far off the path the wind will pick up and you'll eventually be blown back to where you're expected to be.

Thanks :3

Also, what's being said about the invisible walls, that only applies to... the first three areas, right? And they're still quite vast. Anyhow, I like that they're not *just* invisible walls, you know? Like you just run in place with no worldly reason why you shouldn't be able to progress forward with the traditional invisible wall, but this one utilizes the strong winds making you inability to progress past a certain point just a touch more plausible.

EDIT: Oh.. wrong quote button. Well... yeah, y'all can figure it out.

I loooved this game! It was the only reason I turned on my PS3 in over a year (mind you, performing all of the system updates wasn't too much fun!)

I played it from start to finish along with another journeyer and it was one of the greatest experiences I've had in a game in a looong time.

This game looks and sounds amazing! There's something so vague and mysterious about it all that makes me really want to give it a try. It'll be a while until I am able to purchase another game but this one definitely sounds worth the money. Thanks for telling/showing us this awesome treasure :D

Took a while but I finally got around to it through the Collector's Edition. I must say I am tempted to want to make a Journey cosplay (what do you call those guys anyway? Journeymen?) I like how you do get the feeling of wanting to play through it again, especially given the interactive quality of meeting up with other players. On the first go you're focusing on moving through the game but once you've got it under your belt you feel a bit more 'free' to get back in there with someone. At least that's my own personal feeling.

The CE has creator commentary while they play the entire campaign, which was surprising to me. Can you imagine if Sonic Team did that with NiD? Just like Journey NiD is a 'short but sweet' start to finish game, so it'd certainly be possible. Though the difference would be the need for subtitles as the crew would be speaking Japanese. (preferably meaning at least Naka, Ohshima, Iizuka, Sasaki)

That does sound interesting. I wonder if they updated the original game with this commentary. I can't play it right now since I don't have my PS3 with me but when I get it back I'll check into this.
