I got a game called Journey last week or maybe it was two weeks ago. I'd been following it since I first read about it in the PlayStation magazine. It's made by thatgamecompany, the creators of flOw and Flower. The plot requires some interpretation but from first glance it appears to be about an unnamed humanoid in a red cloak who's trying to reach a mountain. It sounds simple but this particular journey has our main character going through a desert with beating winds, friendly creatures, and some not so friendly creatures. The soundtrack is atmospheric and really enhances the experience. If you've played other thatgamecompany games then you'll definitely know how well they incorporate music into their environments.
Sure you can dash through the game in maybe an hour and a half or so but I found it a bit more enjoyable to actually explore as much as the developers allowed me to. You're a bit limited at first because you start off without a scarf and scarfs are what you need to fly but as you collect these white, floating symbols your scarf begins to grow more, allowing you to fly just a bit farther every time. At times I wished I could fly infinitely but for the most part I was content with just running.
There is multiplayer but it's not quite like other PS3 games. From what I've seen so far, you won't be able to message a friend and ask if they want to take an online journey with you. After the first area you'll be able to meet up with a random journeyer like yourself and things will move on from there. It's a bit upsetting that I can't get my brother to play with me but it's also not so bad. To me it feels like partnering you up with a random gamer removes certain social barriers. You can't communicate with a headset or a keyboard so there's no language barriers. You can't tell what country the person is from so there's no conflict there. And you won't know the person's name until you've both made it to the very end. It's very anonymous but you'll feel a certain way about your partner based on their actions rather than how they talk or where they're from.
If you're into the more atmospheric and exploration type of games then I think you might enjoy this game. The price is at $15 the last time I checked. Now, even though I was hyped up for this game I wasn't very excited about the price. I got it anyway though because I love thatgamecompany's work and I couldn't stand waiting for this too much longer. If you want to wait for this to drop maybe five or ten bucks then I won't blame you. I feel it was worth the price tag though as I've gone on the same journey maybe three or four times now and may even go at it again a little later.
One thing I really like about this game and even Flower is that they both reminded me of NiGHTS. From what I gathered, Flower was about the dreams that flowers living in urban environments have about their world's conditions and both of these games reminded me how much freedom there was in flight even if you couldn't fly infinitely in Journey. In fact, Journey often had me wishing there was a NiGHTS game where you could fly in more of a 3D space rather than a 2.5D space.
