Ok, like I always say, I don't dream much and that fact irks me to no end. Then I have a night like last night---er, technically this morning.

First of all, I was having some odd problems staying completely asleep. It felt like I was waking up every hour or forty-five minutes or so, and because of this it felt like I was dropping in and out of the dream at critical moments and things were happening that I wasn't able to see. A lot of the details felt mixed up even right after waking up, and now I'm not sure anything will be coherent at all. Order itself seemed lost, but I still remember the characters very well.
A little more backstory might be needed before I begin. Until one month ago almost precicely I lived in a small town, outside the borders where I didn't have interation much. My social circle consisted of my family and one childhood friend who moved to Cincinatti though we still keep in touch by phone and see each other five or six times a year. I then moved to Columus Ohio for collage, and see more people in a day than I did in my entire life.

Perhaps it seems natural then that I started out in what appeared to be a congomeration of the main body of the library and some kind of cathedral, packed to the brim with people. I wasn't lucid just yet, but had the feeling that something was very odd.
If you don't know what it looks like, the Thompson Library is a pretty magnificient place. It has five stories with some modern, clear stairs and walls so you can look straight up from the ground to ceiling in one area and across to the other side from a reading chair in another. Not being the physical one made it over ten times as huge with light blazing everywhere, things that looked like stars flowing through the centeral openings, and people walking about packed pretty tightly, but not enough to restrict movement.
After walking for some time, I woke up but was too tired to do anything but go back to sleep, I barely even registered I had been dreaming which is usually something I try to note and write down or become lucid and control it. I became lucid anyway though, and I found myself standing at a middle floor, my back to the magnificient view and looking at a relatively uncrowded room. It didn't have any books in it, it was more of a reading room with a few low chairs and couches and a fireplace (this room can't be found in the waking library). In it was also was what appeared to be a young woman who I can't for the life of me describe, no features come to mind although I can recall her actions almost perfectly. I was at this point in time wondering if I was dreaming, and I never said anything and neither did she but I recieved a feeling of confirmation. She was halfway on the other side of the room, and came over to stand beside me and we looked out at the building. She didn't really point so much as directed my attention to a higher spot on the other side, and I got the impression we were supposed to be going that way. We left that room and started going out and around the hall to the stairs. The architecture had gone sort of crazy and it was mazelike, I wasn't sure where I was going but just walked along what felt like the right path.
At this point in time I woke up temporarily again, and wasn't fully able to think again, and when I was back asleep we were in some kind of resturant on a beach. It had a lot of detail to it, but I'd never been in anything my mind could have pulled the inspiration from, at least not directly. The woman was also there, I could tell she had been waiting for me, and we left through an exit that should have led to a street or something but put us back in the library. I looked back and wondered to myself what that place was, and she answered "a world" ina voice I can't recall. At this point I was certain it was a dream, and I got a sense of confirmation from her, no words this time. We kept going up, and I get the sense we passed several more of what she had called 'a world', a place that shouldn't have connected in the waking world. Each one was different, and I don't remeber any as well as the first, but I got the idea they were much larger than just the parts we went through, and that we were right now only going through them to find our destination. I woke up once more and it was around six thirty, aware I had been dreaming and determined to sleep in, but all I got was a feeling of bliss and the presence of the woman, who still hadn't actually said much but had the odd ability to hold a conversation without talking.

It has made a really lasting impression on me, even if what I got out of it wasn't nearly all that went on. I'm suprisingly ok with that. It wasn't the sort of dream that you were meant to gather details from--- there was somethingelse going on there, and I think by helping that woman (or her helping me, I wasn't sure which it was, it felt more of the two of us doing something together to help each other) I accomplished something that mattered, even if I don't know what it was and never get to see it again.

So tell me, fellow Visitors and Dreamers, what do you make of my experience?

YOU NEED TO FIND THAT ROOM NOW!! It must be hidden somewhere! Maybe you have to do something like move a certain book to uncover but it must be found!!!

...No such luck. I've been trying for three nights and can't get back in that dreamscape. I guess my subconcious will only go back on its terms, not mine. Curse you, subconcious!!!

I'm almost certain that woman was some kind of Dream Being. Not NiGHTS, I know what NiGHTS would feel like both from description of other dreamers and logical conclusions.

A dream being... I like that interpretation. Based on the actions you described she does seem something quite out of this world.

I miss dreaming intensely. I have been dreaming more nowadays, but I still want to devote a night to 'proper dreaming' =)

This does sound quite interesting. Not so much confusing as complex, I would say. Clearly a lot of the dream didn't really happen in a direct way, but it was more of a state of mind and feelings that your subconscious conveyed to you. This happens to me quite often, too. I don't talk to people as much as they 'transmit' information to me. It's quite cool.
By the way, do you have any methods of going back to dreamscapes? Would you like to share past experiences of attempts - both failed and successful - at going back to a certain one?

I've almost never been able to get back into a dream after waking up. Like I say, this might just be because it's pretty rare for me to remember a dream at all. I usually try music, listening to something right before bed with low volume. I've also tried 'touring', where you literally devote your last moments of conciusness to visualizing where you want to go and what you want to do. The major problem with that is it always wakes me up to be imagining something and then I end up awake way too late at night.

I would say the major problem with trying to dream is the fact most of my collage classes need me up so early. Both the dream I started this thread over and the first time I managed to fly in a dream occured in early morning, 4-6 ish. I think that must be when my REM cycle kicks in, but the problem with trying to do that and get enough food and wake up in time is that it can't be done unless I start sleepwalking too. But that's what I try to do on weekends. Everyone loves sleeping in then--- but I sleep in after trying to stuff media in my head different ways to get a good dream.

Okay, almost specifically to contradict my above post I dreamed this morning too. My subconscious must have the same weird sense of humor I do.

WARNING! DO NOT OPEN THE SPOILER UNLESS YOU ARE A MATURE PERSON! I’LL GIVE YOU THE LONG STORY SHORT IF YOU WANT IT, BUT THE ONLY REASON I’M EVEN POSTING THIS IS THE FACT IT RELATES SOMEWHAT TO MY DREAM IN THE ORIGINAL POST. IF YOU CAN BE SICKENED OR GROSSED OUT BY MORE OR LESS ANYTHING A NORMAL HUMAN CAN, LEAVE THE SPOILER ALONE AND READ THE SUMMARY. I DREAMED IT, AND I FEEL LIKE I’M POLLUTING THE AIR AROUND ME BY BEING AWAKE NOW.

Okay, like I promised, long story short. I was in the shopping district of a town much closer to home than I am now, and there was---Let’s call it a Nightmaren that wanted my white Ideya. It was shapeshifting into various people I knew, but I eventually outlasted it and caught the tail end of the sensation I had got in the first dream.

Spoiler

Told you.
Okay, if Nightmaren actually do exist, I’ve seen one, and if my words don’t convince you how creepy they actually are, I pray you can keep saying that confidently, because I would never wish anyone unprepared to meet that. I’m still in a state of shock over this and am not sure if I’m going to be able to concentrate on anything else for the rest of the day.

Also, this has to date been the longest continuous dream I have had that I can remember all of. I applied no techniques before going to sleep for trying to dream, and my normal sleep pattern was not interrupted.

Kinky lol. Did you "you can do it" individual sound like the dream being? By the way, I know you wouldn't want anyone to meet "that" but I'm a bit curious as to what it looked like.

Yeah, kinky in the same way Slaanesh is *shivers*. And yes, I'm almost certain it was, even though once agian I can't recall the voice.

Hmm... As for what it looked like, it's easy to describe, but hard to get the horror across properly. I'd say it looked a little like the movie incarnation of Venom off of Spider-man 3 crossed with the normal woman. Which was half the creepy part, seeing something that was so utterly inhuman pretending to be.

It's not that creepy. Good on you for sharing, though, it's kind of interesting.

I'm interested that other people have seen Nightmaren. I think I may be the target of a Nightmaren and I wonder if anyone knows a good way to deal with them. When the Nightmaren shows up in my dream, I keep acting out of character - I don't mean just having lower inhibitions, which would be normal in a dream, but actually doing things that would be antithetical to my personality. I can feel that there is some kind of presence controlling me and sometimes it even has a shape (usually a human/devil thing, but sometimes words appear on a wall or in a book telling me what to do). It really scares me, because I get worried that there is a part of me that would really do those things in the waking world.

Invoking NiGHTs doesn't work, I don't know why, maybe I just can't quite imagine him well enough or I'm not good enough at playing NiGHTs or something. The Nightmaren can get me to influence other characters in the dream, so I have to be very careful who I invoke. I can't control what I think about before I sleep very easily, the stress of the constant effort stops me sleeping. The only thing I find that makes the Nightmaren less likely to appear without destroying my ability to sleep, is making sure I don't get too warm while I'm asleep.

I'm going to try to answer, but I would like to caution there is an enormous amount of debate about the source of dreams and nightmares. It's one of the things people have been debating for centuries, and there are as many conclusions as there are people it seems. One of the worst problems in trying to understand dreams is that it's hard to obtain any evidence whatsoever that can be objectively verified, and I admit my theories and conclusions might be false.

With the disclaimer out of the way, I'll try to help you out. The first thing would be to identify what this entity (or subconcious drive, if you're of the literal mindset) is after, and try to determine what is going on in your life that might be affecting your dreams. It seems like it tries to take away your choice in your dreams, forcing you to do things you don't want to or would object to moraly when awake, right? I would guess this is caused by you, either conciously or not, feeling like your life is being run for you, maybe by an authority figure or circumstance. If this is true, it might be stress and the more base instincts built into every human that are trying to get you to revolt against this. You might try to address this, either by recognizing you don't have control over every little thing and accepting it or by realizing why you do what you do: because ultimately, you choose to do them for respect or love of the authority. If that's a little too metaphysical, try talking, either to a friend (the good kind who will sit and listen to your problems no matter how silly they may seem) or to yourself, try to pin down why you fear loss of control especially to this nightmaren/unconcious drive.

Within your dreams themselves, I'd say this is the sort of time you have to take a stand. It's very hard to give you specific advice, just because it's hard to predict the situation you'll find yourself in; but there are a few general things that would seem like they would help. First, if you can't find NiGHTS or anyone else willing to help you, don't give up. Just because there isn't anyone else around who can stop it you shouldn't stop. In fact, I'd actually refrence my own fight with the creepy shapeshifting thing, I don't recall if I wrote this part down but I knew the whole time I tried to fight it that I couldn't win, but I fought anyway, and that eventually gave me the strength to win. Even if you don't have anything to fight against, if it isn't appearing in a form you can hit, you can still strive against its commands. Try to talk to yourself or it, and remind yourself that your will is your own and that you don't have to do anything you don't want to. Also, you don't really have to imagine NiGHTS specifically as she appears ingame, in fact remembering what NiGHTS is like would probably help you more than NiGHTS' actual presence. Remember, NiGHTS is a Maren who found the strength to rebel against his creator, Wizeman himself. NiGHTS would hate taking orders, but would probably love to come and help someone else who is already showing they aren't willing to be forced to do something they don't want.

I'm not quite sure what the forum's policy on religion is, so I'll spoiler this section:
Spoiler

I hope this helps, let me know if it works, or if I didn't write anything clearly enough to make sense.

I mostly called it a Nightmaren because it feels like there is a presence trying to redirect the course of my dreams, rather than just a bad dream (of which I have a lot and can usually deal with).

I have probably described it wrong. It isn't a lawful force. It is more like a chaotic influence, the kind that would want people to abandon law and give in to their bestial desires.

In that case, I'd say you simply need to do precisely the opposite. If it's something that's trying to get you to do what you want to the detriment of everyone else, you need to reassert your priorities and take a stand for restraining yourself. If it's not too personal, Could I ask for more information on what it is it tends to make you do?

Its not really something I feel comfortable talking about.

That seemed like some adventure/chase/battle. While the woman in your dreams may not have been NiGHTS, could she have been a personal guardian or a Muse of some sort?

Wow, sorry for the late reply, hadn't been on the forums for a long while. I would be inclined to think so, like I said in some earlier post, I would not identify her with NiGHTS (Not quite as carefree and reckless, someone quiter who just gave off an odd aura of calmness). As for a personal guardian, I couldn't say, our interaction felt more like two different but equal entities than one being in some sort of guarding role.

I was actually getting on here to try to refresh myself on this dream, it's been so long since I've had one and I have been feeling a little stressed. Then I remembered how relieving that first one was, so I thought I would try to freshen up my memories of it and get to bed early, and see if I could find it or something else.
