In case you haven't turned on the news or read an article in the past 24 hours, Japan is going through some serious stuff right now. I have never heard of a crisis this bad in my lifetime before. It's like one thing after another. First an earthquake, then a tsunami, and now the possibility of a highly severe nuclear threat. I have Japanese-Americans in my family which may mean I have Japanese relatives over in Japan; I don't know. Still, my heart goes out to these people.

I can say that I'm very upset about the way some people have been treating this situation. There have been a lot of insensitive jokes about this disaster all the way from "Godzilla attacked Japan" to "this is revenge for Pearl Harbor." I don't get how people can actually laugh about something this drastic so soon without a thought that this could happen to them at any time of the year at any place on the planet.

Then there are a few folks who just care about anime and video game companies surviving and could care less about the other citizens who make up the very fiber of their society. As much as I love Japan's entertainment I could give a damn if I ever see another video game come from them. Just let the people who make up those studios and their families be okay.

Whenever there are serious disasters, I feel like I should say something. But since I'm not directly impacted, I imagine my words ring hollow. Still, this is an event to be treated with some gravity. Anyone who's joking about "revenge for Pearl Harbor" isn't my kind of person. Just thinking about the implications of that kind of comment seriously bother me.

Fortunately, Japan is a country that's PRETTY PREPARED for natural disasters. So even though it was a bigger disaster, it's not going to ravage the country the way Haiti was after it's earthquake.
Still, I hope folks aren't going through too much suffering because of this.

I heard bout it. That was FUDGED UP Man. 8.9 Earthquake Right? Wait did you say Nuclear Threat!? I Stand Corrected this is FUDGED UP SO MUCH THAT IT'S AS IF SOMEONE BLEW UP THE BLOODY PLANET!! Ahem That aside I Hope your Family if any in Japan Are Doing Alright After all This. My Heart Goes Out to them Too Bro.

I Haven't heard the Jokes But I'll take you Word For it. No One Jokes bout something as SERIOUS and FUDGED UP SINCE HITLER AS THIS! For Those who talked bout Godzilla tearing up the Place, Listen here. Godzilla isn't real. What Happened here is Natural Forces at Hand. For Thoses who Said that Bout Revenge for Pearl Harbor should watch out. I Don't think many people took that kindly. Me Included.

People possibly lost their Lives. All that Damage and Destruction is FUDGED UP. I hope those people and their Families are Alright.

I Personally would Like to meet these Jokers to show them a Piece of my Mind. Anyone who Jokes bout disasters is bad in my Book. Also those who said that's Revenge for Pearl Harbor is way off and Plus that doesn't even make a good Joke for anything period.

For anyone interested in donating, there are numerous ways to do so. You can donate to the Red Cross, via PayPal to a number of relief efforts, via your cell phone depending on your carrier, and many others. Make sure to do it only via credible websites, so that you are actually contributing to the relief. There are lots of scammers out there right now taking advantage of the situation, so please donate wisely.

As of right now, Japan is still going through numerous aftershocks that are keeping people on their toes. Japan has formally requested assistance with their nuclear reactor situation, which is still unpredictable but right now seems somewhat safe and contained. Remember, nuclear reactors don't explode (they don't have enough, or the right kind, of material to do so). These reactors are designed with countless levels of safety and failover in mind, despite this particular one allegedly designed to take up to a 7.9 magnitude earthquake. The levels are still safe up to 30 km away, despite being much higher than normal they are within tolerable limits.

I spent the weekend with some OCR people, including a friend who had previously worked as an Instruments and Controls Technician at a Nuclear Energy Facility. He put some of it as follows:

"What they're trying to prevent is the water from the reactor itself from being released into the atmosphere. That's the water that comes in direct contact with the nuclear fuel. This water is radioactive because the steam carries a lot of radioactive particles in it. You don't want to release a lot of that into that atmosphere.

They're most likely worried about the reactor and the primary containment around the reactor being compromised. If primary containment breaks in a reactor building with walls already broken, the only thing separating the radioactive steam from the atmosphere is a couple of inches of steel. If the reactor walls themselves break, then you have a leak of radioactive steam/water. And since a reactor is essentially a giant pressure cooker (reactors operate around 1020+ psi), a substantial crack or break can be very bad.

The FAST way to relieve pressure would be to just vent all the steam really quickly; either directly into the atmosphere or though a ton of heat exchangers. The problem with that is that you end up releasing a lot of radiation, so on the scale they'd need to do it here, they can't do it.

What boric acid and water do is kill and cool the fuel. Boron kills nuclear reactions; that's what they use on control rods. It stops the fuel from reacting and generating heat. Water pumped through a reactor draws away heat. So what they're doing is reducing the heat in the reactor so that they can relieve the pressure.

The thing is, once you dump boric acid into a nuclear reactor, you have basically killed your reactor. You can never use it again, unless you spend an absolutely exorbitant amount of money to clean it. This is a big deal. Obviously safety is a concern and everyone wants to prevent a release of radiation, but nuke plants generate a lot of electricity and they're expensive to make. So dumping the liquid poison (i.e. boric acid) into a reactor is the absolute last resort.

This is different from "nuclear waste getting into the water supply." It's not really waste they're worried about in a meltdown. It's the nuclear fuel that's still reacting and very very hot. If they can't control the temperature of the fuel (with cooling water and if necessary, boric acid), it just keeps reacting and getting hotter until it melts through the reactor itself; it will continue to melt through down into the earth and could possibly come in contact with groundwater, which is very very bad."

And already people in Japan start writing VOCALOID songs. :U
But I'm bringing that up for a reason.
Miku+Luka+Gumi - Pray for (Japan)
It's extremely touching... You have no idea...

Also, if you guys really wanna keep updated, Japan's main news station started an english service not too long ago. So while you guys are watching news stations such as BBC, which is pretty on top of things, NHK is the best to follow for updates. When something "Recently happened" on other news stations, it's usually after an hour or two.

Pray for Japan guys... They really don't need anything past the earthquake, tsunami, nuclear meltdown and volcano...

It's just awful hearing about what happened.

I asked my parents to donate $200 dollars to the Red Cross because I know that if something like this happened to me, they'd do the same thing.

SOA is holding an auction that will donate all proceeds to the Red Cross for Japan relief efforts; a JoD pillowcase is one of the items- http://blogs.sega.co...ns-for-charity/

I recently donated something myself. I wish I could have helped a bit more.

That pillow case is so tempting but I don't have enough money to participate. Maybe if it's still going on when I get my next paycheck.
