Hiya,
Just a quick post to let you all know that DiGi and I have decided to bring back the NiGHTSintoDreams.com official chatroom IRC. We're not sure when this will happen but I imagine it will be in the next couple of weeks. The old chatroom was very central to our community heart like the forums were. I've missed it a lot and I think it would help our community grow further.
There will be some strict terms laid down from the getgo though so the atmosphere and enjoyability of the room wont be mucked up. Reliable, experienced and sensible mods will also be needed. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Right now all you need to know is that we're bringing the chat back.
More news soon :-)

Excitement! I've never been a huge IRC person, but chatrooms are funtimes.

I've been swaying more towards chat rooms these days anyways. I've forumed myself out over these past two years.

You've just made my miserable week a little less miserable. I love chatrooms, and I wasn't part of the site when the old chatroom was up, so I can't wait!

Paint is indeed cool but I'm wondering if not a bit pointless since we already have an oekaki and not everyone in a chatroom wants to draw. Plus IRC has a hell of a lot of options. Hmmm. You're all welcome to link to any decent chat progs that might be suitable. I used to use an IRC java client back in the day... and before that an ancient old rubbish chat that I couldn't even boot people from/have ops. I'm looking for something simple to jump into but with decent moderator options like IP ban/mute etc etc.

True, we do have the Oekaki board, and not everyone would want to load up a pchat if they have no intention of drawing. But a pchat is still its own entity; unlike the oekaki in a pchat you can collaborate, and it's just a lotta fun (former moderator of the AnimeX.com pchat here [site is currently defunct : ( ]). There are ways to make it more spammer-proof, especially if a forum login is required.

I would be very much in favor of Paintchat, even though I don't use the Oekaki board. I like just making little doodles that are not necessarily NiGHTS related. Or particularly worthy of showing off.
Although I suppose moderation could be an issue... are NiGHTS fans to be trusted not to draw obscenities?

...... wow, ok. I didn't know TRiP went and made a topic about it too.
Me and her still need to think over this idea, i wanna make sure us and the community are understanding this before we go in to it. I was around during the last time we had a chatroom and i remember how other things began to suffer, like the forums for example and general site activity. So i wanted to make sure i went over some of the restrictions with Lynne before we announced this properly. I'll make a new topic when we've finalized everything.
As for the idea of a paint chat, i'm not too sure myself, personaly. I've got nothing against paint chat but i do know that it will limit the amount of people who would feel comfortable about joining in a chat, partly because they might feel like they have to draw something. Then there's moderating a paint chat, anybody can come on in and draw something which might offend somebody else or draw stuff that could be 18+ and the last thing we want to deal with are people like that. So as far as paint chats go, i'm leaning towards not having them simply because i want to make a place where the community can just chill and talk to one another rather than have another oekaki that'll have to be moderated in case someone starts drawing porn in there.
Despite my opinion, i'll talk it over with Lynne anyway because nothing is final yet. Hell, we may not even do it at all if we can't come to an agreement on the matter.
Whatever we end up doing in terms of a chatroom it's in our best interests of the community and for it to grow and remain active.

Would a community poll make sense? As per the type of chat and whatnot.
One thing I didn't consider though, with a Paintchat added to the site, would it be a NiGHTS themed paint chat only? I figure with the Oekaki it's one thing, but hypothetically it would probably make more sense for it to be general, though of course I guess we'd exclude anything NSFW. Hopefully it shouldn't be too hard for the community to handle, though of course it'd only happen if enough members would actually use it.

If you start a basic chat to see how things work, could a paint option be added later, then removed if it proves to be a bother?

Poll sounds good, however I believe that a paint chat is just too much. Get a stable text chat up, then after it has been solid for a while, explore other options. Baby steps, plus IRC is very easy to admin (if you know what you're doing), and probably a lot more accessible than a paint chat. In the end, its up to the admins as to what they want and feel like maintaining. I do worry that random people stumbling into a paint chat can be a much bigger hassle than just text.

^ in response to above comments-
A pchat is its own app, I doubt a paint client can be added to any regular chats out there..
Otherwise, as stated, instead of opening it to anybody, it'd only be open to registered forum members. At that point it'd be a matter of whether new sign-ups would strangely be people coming in just to mess things up. Though in any case the ban hammer can be at the ready.

Well, we've been busy and we still need to draft up a lot of points to make about the upcomming chat room, but i will confrim now that it will just be a normal chat room, not a paintchat one.
I wanted to get this out first quickly before people start expecting a paintchat when there is not going to be one. Kinda like a heads up, in a way.
Anyways, me and TRiP have been very busy with numerous things at the moment so we have not been able to sort out a chatroom just yet. But it's high on our priorities list so sit tight for a while until we get to it

D'aw, allright then. As far as pchats go we can have a Nidcom meetup at Niko's pchat if desired

I wouldn't mind a bit of IRC, just as long as the Forum doesn't go dead, as DiG' said. But I don't think there should be a major rush for it, It's better to get the more important thing finished first, stuff like this can wait a bit.
And oh gawd, the terrible, terrible things I've seen on paint chats.

I'm actually really looking forward to this. I never really got a chance to properly hang out on the old IRC, so it'll be almost a new experience for me. Certainly something to do when on the few occasions I'm sitting here bored with nothing to do

Oh man. Chat rooms. I love 'em. I just hope people are in it often enough.

Oh trust me there will ALWAYS be people in there. Chatrooms are addictive. As I well know XD; I used to go to bed at 2 IN THE AFTERNOON when I ran my old one. Can't do that anymore though since I have to get up at 5am to go to work, so we'll definately be needing timezone alternative mods and stuff.

Ohohoho, I remeber the old chat room. Good times, good times.
Oh yeah also been lurking for the last three years like a creeper hai
Edit: Or 4... or 5... something like that. When did the website go up again? Cause it was around then.

Well, we definitely want to do it. But we need staff to run the iRC.
Really, truth be told, TRiP let the idea of us bring back the chatroom too early. Since she started work at SEGA i've been busy myself trying to sort other things out, we wanted to get this all together when we were good and ready ....but hey you know TRiP, can't wait two minutes, lol.
So we still want to do this. No, we NEED to do this. What with album NiGHTS: Lucid Dreaming releasing next year we wanna have an online release party like we did for last years Winter Dreamers EP. So it's not even a case of just us merely 'wanting' to bring it back, we 'need' to bring it back. But the timing is a little messed up right now.
I wanted to ask around and make a topic to see who might be interested in moderating the iRC chatroom once it goes up. I'll try and get that topic posted within the next week or so.
In a nutshell - no, we have not forgotten this idea, we want and need to bring the chatroom back sometime soon.

I know over at OCR we're in the process of migrating over to Espernet for IRC, as that has a lot of anime/game/comic/whathaveyou chatrooms associated. Seems to be a pretty solid place, stable connection and good staff support.
I usually leave at least one of my compy's on 24/7, so I wouldn't mind idling as a mod in the chat. I could at least help get things settled once we get it all up and running. I'm familiar enough with IRC as to know some basic functionality (ops, +v, kicks, bans), so it's your call.
If Espernet isn't your thing, you could always go SynIRC.

Haha, glad I could get the conversation going again. Also, what about Mibbit? I've seen quite a few web sites use it to great effect, and I *think* it's free. Somebody will have to double check me on that.
