I turned on this old PC thismorning and chkdisk sprung into action fixing something wrong with THIS pc. What's with the pc errors spreading? lol Nothing wrong with this pc now (dont give me frantic phonecalls DiGi) but eerie timing nonetheless.

NiGHTS admin curse i tells ya.

Since Sega hates you and the campaign, they've decided to attack your computer. :o

Now that TRiPPY's focused mainly on organizing the overabundance of files to sort through from the b0rk3d HDD, I'd like to take some time to give a few reflections on what could have possibly happened, as well as what is currently happening with the duplicates issue.

I'm not 100% sure what happened to cause the issue, but from the looks of it, the original HDD either had a partially corrupted MFT and partition list, or the partition list had one partition deleted while the other remained intact. Breaking it down to simpler terms: one hard drive doesn't mean one partition. There can be multiple logical divisions on a single drive, making it look to the hardware as multiple drives. If you have a computer with "drives C and D", it doesn't necessarily mean that they are on different physical hard drives. This is why the issues came in where it was missing the first partition but still showing the second. The system started assuming that the first partition was corrupted and the size of the full hard disk, and that the second was however big the partition list said it was. Mathematically, it was trying to computer incorrectly. 500 GB HDD divided into two partitions, one being 450 GB and the other being 50 GB, was being seen by the computer as one corrupted partition at 500 GB and the other at 50 GB. 500 GB != 550 GB. Now, in this kind of panic, running a chkdsk might cause more issues than it would solve since the file fragments aren't indexed in the MFT correctly (yes, it's a lot of technobabble, DEAL WITH IT!). Luckily, it didn't delete erroneous fragments but, apparently, duplicated them. It was either that which caused the duplications caught by the HDD or an issue with the recovery software. The recovery software must have detected each file fragment and accounted that as a full file, and while recovering each file fragment it also extracted the full file as well. This is the ONLY WAY the HDD was able to seemingly hold an exponential amount of space in duplicates. The platters themselves are simply unable to hold more than they're designed with as far as I know, so the fragment/full file scenario is the most logical explanation for the extra files. The result: almost everything has been saved, but there's too much of it. The recovery software's usage of ram was the issue when first attempting to recovery the files, so the new computer did everything it was supposed to.

So good luck sorting through the files, TRiPPY, and I hope that everything's there that you need. The new computer is a beast and will serve your photoshopping needs well, along with DiGi's recording requirements :D I think I deserve my madness professor award now.

Dude...

I UNDERSTOOD THAT. 8D

Well, the basic gist anyway! Way to go Stevo! Title deserved! (Though your Matrix-bending powers will only take you so far, Mr. 99...)

I'm assuming that the files are all there, it's just a matter of sorting through it all, like 5 years' worth of duplicate family vacation photos? XD

OH THE HUMANITY. Hilarious, yet disturbing and EXTREMELY embarrassing.

DiGi should get an external hard drive so if this ever happens again the pr0nz will be safe. And... not be where they shouldn't be.
