"Don't die before I do, Lloyd, My son..."

The best of the best? Well... *goes through list* I'd have to say that between Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (PS1), The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64), Ratchet & Clank (PS2), Odin Sphere (PS2), and Dark Cloud 2 (PS2)... the one stands out the most is Klonoa: DtP.

"It's a lie! It's a lie!! It's a lie!!!" I never played the original, but compared to the Wii version this is more of a tear-jerker. (Darn it I'm welling up again.) .... KLONOA! ;_; And you don't have to know much except that Ghadius was a villain and Lephise has the power to heal the land back to normal.

After that (since the endings to games are great for so many reasons, and not one ending can top them all), would have to be Odin Sphere. "They will be the ancestors to all of humanity..." Great story, lovable characters, and a star-crossed couple. ...I suggest not watching the ending unless you've played the entire game. It's just...it wouldn't make much sense if you did. I mean, you can click, but
Spoiler
will leave you clueless and you won't be attached to them as much. Oswald's words will mean much more,
Spoiler
and Cornelius' feelings will mean more in general. (2D graphics are used, so hope no one minds that.)

The final ones are nearly a draw. Ocarina of Time
Spoiler
, Ratchet & Clank left me with a rather glad heart
Spoiler
, and Dark Cloud 2...well, Monica and Max
Spoiler

In my opinion, my top three video game endings of all time are (to flesh out my list):

Megaman X 8 (PS2): The edning to this game is pretty emotional, esp. if you get the Zero ending,
Spoiler
The quote at the ending by Dr. Light (who means more to you if you've played the original Megamans) really adds something of a finality to the series, although it never really felt "over" to me, and they certainly could continue it, if they wanted to. I mean, come one, guys,
Spoiler
I want to see some Reploid Angst!

Mega Man Zero 3 (GBA): This is one of the most emotional endings in video game history, and adds another prolififc quote to Zero's list of many prolific quotes. "
Spoiler
The realalation of exactly what has been going on with the mysterious Reploid this entire time,
Spoiler
, are not plot twists that I expected. All and all, it was really good.

Tales of Symphonia (GCN/PS2) : Many of you know of my obsession with this game, and so that I adore
the ending to this game is not a big shocker. I am incredibly pissed off at Kratos for
Spoiler
, but his
Spoiler
quote is realy something else, and it's one of Mr.Clarke's best acted lines in the entire game. On another note, the fact that there is
Spoiler
really makes me happy, though I have the sneaking suspicion
Spoiler
. Everyone is given something to do in the canon ending,
Spoiler
, after
Spoiler
. But most of all I love Dirk's line
Spoiler
and Lloyd's response, more than anything else Lloyd says in that game. It really speaks to his character. Over all, the somewhat mealancholy, but moving beautiful, ending is fitting for a melancholy and beautiful game full of lessons that we all need to learn.

I do agree that Klonoa has a good ending, but I don't like Ocarina of Time, even though I've beat it, and think that it's easily the most over-rated game of all time.
Now I'll have to play Odin Sphere...

I've always been a big fan of the Sonic 2 ending. (the only real YouTube clip of the ending was this colorized version - the original was grayscale)
I first saw it when I was pretty young and I thought it was the most epic thing ever. I don't know why, it probably is kind of lame to people used to modern games. But one of my good friends from college agreed with me about how awesome the ending is, so I'm not the only one!

I also really loved the end of Panzer Dragoon Saga - since the game's so rare I won't bother with spoiler tags. Throughout the game people talk about the "divine visitor" and how it might be the dragon that the protagonist, Edge, rides. In the end, the dragon reveals that THE PLAYER (he uses your actual name) is the real divine visitor who has been controlling Edge from another world. Possibly, Edge has been dead since the start of the game and was brought back only by the player.
The story also centers around a sort of female drone named Azel and as an epilogue you see her wandering into the desert in search of Edge as a man warns her that she will likely be killed. It's both a total down-note and a total mindfuck. I've got to replay that game.

(I also like the ending for NiD but I suppose that goes without saying?)

Ah, well it was just eight-year old me being emotional. Couldn't help it.

Odin Sphere is pretty good and some plot twists...well, I doubt many people will see them coming. Although I should warn you of two things: repeating maps by Book 3 or 4 and when too much is happening on-screen, the game slows down (I think the EU version fixed that). Long live Vanillaware! ^_^ (They also did Grim Grimoire and MuraMasa: The Demon Blade. GG wasn't all that great imo and MuraMasa had reviewers saying that...well, and this is major,
Spoiler
But other than that, I can't say much since I haven't played yet. It still got a high score though. Oh, and Princess Crown, but never played.)

Dude. O_O I always wanted to play a game like that as a kid. I'm not sure when - although possibly influenced by games that used the name I put as the file outside of calling a character in-game that name (Ex. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Spoiler
) - but back before reality kicked me in the jaw, I thought as myself as the hero directing the characters to victory. So silly and naive...

Really wished I had played PDS as a kid. T_T Wonder if there's a place other than GameStop around the city that might have the game and system...

Well...I really liked the ending to The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening...it's an oldie, but a goodie. The ending to JoD, of course...uhm...The ending to Wind Waker, too...
There are so many good ones... @_@

I liked the ending to Kingdom Hearts. When Hikari came on, it made the whole thing that much more emotional for me. I felt so bad for Sora and Kairi at the time. I wanted them to be together so badly. lol

I would highly recommend you that you find/buy it BUT it's the rarest Saturn game so it sells of obscene amounts of money - like $200-$400. The incredibly small production run is one of the great tragedies in gaming. Also the source code was apparently lost, so it's unlikely to ever be ported onto another console.

X_X Darned it! Man... That's a kind of cash is harsh on the pockets. I guess I'll have to hold off on that indefinitely. You know, unless there's one at a flea market for a reasonable price. I should look next time.

Do you know another game that refers to the Player as they play? Baiten Kaitos.

^^ I love that game...

Panzer... >< I played that game only once on my friend's Satun. He's a game nut. Bigger than me. Is that really how it ends?

I tottally agree about Link's Awakening. ^_-

I also like the ending to Sonic 2.

Both made me cry...manly tears ;_;

SotC's is awesome, when people say the game has no story I kindly direct them to the ending, which packs it all in one cinematic.

Okami also is a beautiful game with a beautiful ending sequence, nicely tied in throughout the last battle.

SotC's is awesome, when people say the game has no story I kindly direct them to the ending, which packs it all in one cinematic.

Even during the main chunk of the game, I'd say it has plenty of story. Unfortunately, I'm stuck on the 9th boss, so I haven't seen the ending. T T Stupid turtle.

Of course, I love the endings of both NiGHTS games. The kids fix their problems in the real world, find each other and have a cute moment, and then that night they fall asleep looking forward to more good dreams... :P How much better can it get?

I agree with some others' choice of Klonoa: DtP. That is the first game that has actually made tears slide down my cheeks. I felt the lump in my throat, my face scrunched up, and it took a lot of effort for me to not sob in front of my brothers. Klonoa 2's ending is also a winner. It had much of the same effect as DtP, though when I first saw it I was alone in my room watching YouTube, so I let myself actually cry.

Torias, you have taste. I really liked MMZ3's ending, too. After watching that last boss fight, it was like "Oh, well that explains a lot." That ending scene after the last boss I think was the accumulation of events throughout the Zero series, and maybe even the X series. How often do you see Zero smile? After so long, he finally seems to be happy and sure of himself. Overall, it was a very hopeful scene and more uplifting than a lot of previous Mega Man endings.

I thought the ending of Metroid: Fusion was pretty cool. Surprise, Samus! The computer of your ship

And then the animals giving a "helping hand" was cute.

Kingdom Hearts 1, Klonoa DtP and Klonoa LV are very good picks, so here are some more to add to the list...

Mother 3/Earthbound 2, Sonic Adventure 2 and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (Red/Blue)- Two of these endings left me in a state of confusion and depression/happy-sadness for a decent amount of time and the other felt pretty epic (that is until it was brutally cheapened).

Oh, sorry about that. I felt that Sonic Adventure 2 was the one that was brutally cheapened (I mean come on, a guy makes the sacrifice of the century and then is brought back?!). Mystery Dungeon and Mother 3 were the ones that left me in a weepy state.

meh, it was only a guess, but i knew for a fact that mother 3 wasn't the one cheapened.
also, the SA2 one still doesn't add up, how come shadow lost too much energy but not sonic? They used the same amount of power, and activated their super form at the same time. They also have the same strength, so that leads back to the question.

also, he wasn't quote on quote "brought back". There were androids, but never the real one (unless i got the story confused in shadow the hedgehog?). it seems like it's not him cause he doesn't have the same personality as in SA2. but thats just my opinion :)

The Shadow in StH is the real Shadow. You have to spend like 8 minutes in the final Super battle to hear about it, though.

As for Panzer Dragoon Saga, your best bet for playing it would probably be to download it and play it in SFF.

R-Type Final's ending was pretty emotional, and a bit depressing owing to it being the bad end. Getting the good ending is an unbelivably arduous process - you have to unlock a bunch of ships and then complete an entire level on one life, no continues.

The ending to Majora's Mask always pulls at my heart strings, primarily when it comes to how little you actually fix. The existence of the natives of Termina hasn't been magically set right by Link, they still have their normal problems, but now it's not the end of the world, they can face them on their own.

In my opinion, some of the best video game endings belong to the games in the Tales of series. I've played a couple of them, but I have to say Tales of Symphonia is my absolute favorite Tales of game. The ending is beautiful, as is the entire game, and I love replaying it. I never get bored of it!

Tales of the Abyss has an amazing ending as well. The entire end itself is so emotional and it really tugs on my heart strings. My best friend cried, and I was close to tears myself because after everything in the game we went through together, we were so upset that it was over. It's an absolutely breathtaking game.

NiGHTS into Dreams is a given, of course.

I love the ending of Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 as well. Both are tied as my favorite Sonic the Hedgehog games, and both have very special places in my heart. The endings for both games are epic.

Since my "ye old I post constantly days", I've fallen in love with Final Fantasy IV.

The ending for that game is one of the best I've ever seen. I've learned to appreciate Tales of Symphonia's ending more because of it. There's absolutely nothing wrong with what they did in making Kratos leave.
