I was simply curious, as a way to get to know each other better. It came to me when I got home yesterday and realized that I like my Chinese class, and I was curious if anyone else here took a language class or knew another language. So, uhm, what languages does everyone speak? I speak English, pig latin, and some Chinese.

Same as Lucid. My native language is English, I've been taking Spanish for about 6 years now, and I am just starting Japanese. Although, I know a handful of words in various other languages thanks to the fact my family is a bunch of travel addicts. And because I have a LOT of family in Brazil, or at least used to live there for some, I know waaaaaaaay too many curse words and insults in Portuguese. A longstanding family favorite 'embarrass your child' story is how one of my first words was a very rude Portuguese slang word.

American English is my primary language. We don't need no stinkin' "u"s clogging up perfectly fine words like "color".

I took Spanish for something like three and a half years and forgot just about ALL OF IT. Outside of basic vocab like "queso", "gato", and "pantalones" the only phrase I remember is "el mundo es un paƱuelo" which means "the world is a handkerchief" (or it's a small world).

I took Japanese for a year and loved it. I then studied it independently (read: spottily) on and off for about two years. I like to think I could say enough things to figure out BASIC ULTRA-SIMPLE CONVERSATIONS but my literacy level is about that of a first-grader. So I can make sense of untranslated manga aimed at little kids, which I think is a cool skill. I like to think I'll someday go to Japan for a long stretch of time, which would certainly boost my skills. It's tough learning a language without having people to speak it with...

I only know English. I'm not going to say I know Japanese or Spanish or French or any of that stuff because I only know a few words. However I have taken a strong interest in the Japanese language but that's only because I'm tired of reading subs for anime that hasn't been dubbed yet.

Not gonna lie, I only know English. I'm in my second year of German classes, though, but honestly, I couldn't get around Germany with what I know.

English native (whoo!) american (so again- no "u"s for the most part) with a Kansan accent (if there is one- i still don't hear it).
I'm also taking Latin (3rd year.) I can't quite speak it, but I can read, write, and understand it (if you know latin and how it's constructed, you'll know exactly why i can't necessarilly speak it.)
through latin, i can understand a little of spanish and itallian. huzzah.

I speak English, Spanish (though my fluency is dying; started learning it when I was 5 and dialect shift killed me; damnit, Mexican border), a bit of Japanese, bit of French, and I mostly play "I know that word!" with Italian, Latin, and German, but I can recognize phrases in them.

And I speak American English, but my writing... I do borrow a lot from British spellings. Makes more sense in some ways, to me. But English is a nonsensical language on the whole, so it's really not much help for my brain. 8D

My native language is German, and I've learned speaking English in school, along with messaging with many english-speaking people.^^ Actually I've learned French as well, but I forgot most of it, since it's not exactly my favorite language. Chinese or Japanese on the other hand, would be languages I'm pretty intrested in.
