Maybe it could be something along the lines of this: Mephiles knew that he would get locked up in the sceptor, so he was slowly harnessing his powers inside the sceptor and eventually breaks the sceptor so that he can never- EVER get tapped inside again. (I haven't finished the game yet, so I don't know if there's a problem with this idea or not.)
Do you know the entire plot to '06?
If not...Then you'll find out why Mephiles can't ever come back.
Also I'm pretty sure there are two Mephiles' in '06.

Can somebody explain in short to me what he's all about because I've not played 06 and though he was some evil(er) version of Shadow or something... without a nose. Excuse my ignorance XD;
SPOILERS
Mephiles is half of this god called Solaris. In the past the Solarian people did some experiments on this god (which eventually turns out to be the flame on a f*!*ing candle by the way) which went awry and broke the god in two. Mephiles is the mind I think and Iblis is the power. I don't really care. Anyway, throughout the whole game Mephiles is just an all around jerk trying to get the Chaos Emeralds and Make Princess Elise cry so Iblis is released (don't ask) and he can become whole again and destroy space time itself. There is also time traveling and load screens.
Unfortunately it's never elaborated why he does what he does. None of it, like why he wants to destroy time or why he just didn't do it before the experiment or why the experiment failed or why it split him in half or even what it was trying to accomplish to begin with (to make him a battery?) or even why these people worship the damn thing if it's so malevolent or why they'd experiment on their god or why da da da da da da mahogany!
Sonic 06's story literally infuriated me with how incredibly bad it was. Sure, Shadow wasn't emo any more, but at what cost? Mephiles gets a lot of flak from me because as far as I'm concerned his backstory is over half the plot. The best thing I can say about him is his theme songs are okay.

Also, the way you pronounce his name is terrible. It sounds like a sexually transmitted disease. It's horrible.

EDIT: Hahaha!
Elliot: Hey, Claris, what's the matter?
Claris: I've got...THE MEPHILES!

Though i'm finding it difficult to understand why Mephiles is liked at all so do tell us why he appeals to you. I'm interested to know what people see in him.
And i do have to say, i don't actually mind Silver. I do believe he could have been developed better a little but there's some potential there. I also think his prototype name 'Venice' suited him better too. But then again, this topic isn't about Silver so i'll stop side-tracking.

Also, I basically took it as that he thought it was stupid to like the game.

Everybody has their own tastes. I'm sure 90% of the wankers that voted for Prince of Persia to beat NiGHTS in their crappy competition is just another example of people telling you that what you like SUCKZ all because they can't understand your logic. Hello, World.
But, go on. Tell us why Mephiles is a good character. We should at least try to keep this topic on topic.

what are they gonna do, they're fictional! admittedly, some fictional characters take on their own lives in your head and become more people than plot device.

Still...There HAD to be two Mephiles' in the game or it doesn't make much sense plot wise.

Actually no. A plot device exists only for the purpose of advancing the plot and it's not terribly common for characters to be complete and utter plot devices since they often have other traits which contribute more to the narrative than just getting from point A to point B. Mephiles I would say is almost entirely a plot device since he doesn't develop as a character and his motivation is poorly defined as well as a few other little reasons.

- 89% of the wankers from GameSpot.
- Mephiles has potential, if you're interested in that sort of thing.
- plot devices are over-rated and we should all head back to the stone age.
Now go to sleep, the lot of you.

But it's only 6 pm here.
I still think the best Sonic villain was Robotnik from the SatAM cartoon.

I like Sonic Unleashed's take on Robotnik. Evil, but still bumbling. I'd like to see a little less bumble, little more evil.
...if you're into that sort of thing.
ANYWAY, back on topic, I would've appreciated Mephiles a bit more if he wasn't like "I'm gon' PWN Sonic nao" and then it just happens. Worse things have happened to Sonic than being stabbed with a kamehameha.

Actually, I don't like the game as much as I like the character, and I kinda agree, if he wasn't all "Kill Sonic!", than he would be my favorite Sonic villain, but until he gets a little more character development, that position is going to be held by Metal Sonic, who, in my opinion, could pwn Sonic if he wanted to. *Shot*.
-hug- I LOVE YOU. Metal is my favorite villain. Unfortunately for you, though, there's a very tiny chance Mephiles is coming back. His appearance is really only relevant in that one game, one that's known for being a massive burrito of PHAIL. Plus, he was killed at the end, but then again, so was Shadow at the end of SA2.
That game had such a beautiful ending. It really made me respect Shadow as a character, just like all the actual characters in the game. Shadow died for what he believed was right. But then Sonic Heroes came and I was like "WHO IS THIS EMOHOG AND WHY IS HE NOT DEAD!?"

I think he's best remembered as a resource for funny videos. That goes for the whole game, actually.

Let me offer this a rebuttle: OMFG THA'D BE SHO COOLZ! *fanboy seizure*
Mephiles is the most epic villain of all time right up there with Sephiroth and Ganondorf.
...*translated from Latin* Burning indside with violent anger
Burning inside with violent anger
MEPHILES!
...
MEPHILES!
...Oh, come on, tell me Mephy wouldn't be cool with a Sephiroth-esque theme!
EDIT: I looked back on this thread and saw someone ask, "What do we see in him?". What DON'T we see in him?
One, Eggman has been trying for years to kill Sonic(storyline-wise I don't thing game overs count here), but it only took Mephiles a select few DAYS.
Two, the backstory and character build-up makes a lot of sense, seeing as how Mephy and Iblis are a god split in half. Sure, SEGA never specified the whole 'World Domination' thing, then again, they never really explain most things, am I right? (example: Is Blaze a princess or from the future?)
Three, while he may be a recolor, his design as 'the sludge' as I call him, and Crystal Mephy were pretty original.
Four, he's the Ganondorf of Sonic. And who doesn't like Ganondorf?
Five, his was probably the only good voice in the game.
The list goes on. A few things that's been buggin' me though...
The only way to successfully rebond with Iblis is by making a girl cry? And(off-topicly) the only way to revive Sonic is by showing the fans a horrible, vomit-inducing, cheap, cheesy, bestiality scene?! Honestly, those parts of the whole, 'Mephiles' story are a real bugger.

This is kind of off topic, but is Ridley the alien named for Ridley Scott, the "Alien" director?you never know who will return in games these days, i mean, look at how many times Ridley has come back.

'Cept for Metal Sonic. Or Jim Cummings!Robotnik. Anyone who doesn't like these two is an idiot, and I'll verbally attack them over it because their opinions don't matter (=
I like Mephiles myself. I'm not sure why; Probably just reminds me of the stories of shadow creatures from my youth, and his general 'vibe' sounds like something that'd fit in well with the old SatAM-verse I also grew up with if written well enough. He had potential, and while cool in the game, probably didn't reach it. But that's cool with me. I was a POOR KID and had limited knowledge of the Sonic-verse for years so I just patched it all with my own ideas, which is half the fun. I'd like to see Mephiles as a reference in something, or maybe unlockable, but I wouldn't trust SEGA to put him in another story and not totally screw it up. I'm happy with the fan interpretations, if they're written well enough (*Cough* NETRAPTOR *Cough*)
So I think Mephiles is cool, but he's always gonna be second fiddle to Metal Sonic and SatAM Robotnik to me <3
(STD Mephiles? Haha, that's hilarious. I guess it's good I've always pronounced it 'Meff-Aisles')
