I'm considering buying a copy of NiGHTS quite soon, and I'd like to know if it's any fun playing with the standard Saturn controller, or if I should purchase the specialised NiGHTS pad? I apologise if this post is misplaced, but I wasn't sure where to post it. =(

in my honest opinion; It really makes little difference.
I mean, If you have big hands, using a D-pad can hurt sometimes.
The thumbpad sometimes can feel a bit akward...
but the D-pad can feel inacurate too.
I say go with the 3D pad, it's more fun to use.

There are things thats you cant do with the dpad - certain stunts, angles of flight etc. Also paraloops are smoother with the analogue pad. Its not essential, but if you see it as a deal with NiGHTS, get it. Anyway you can use it other games to - Burning Rangers, Manx TT (and PD Zwei if I remember correctly)

I never got to use the analog pad when I played NiGHTS, but I dont recall it being unplayable with the standard controller. I think it should be fine. although if you wish to even approach the records on scoreattack, youll need analog.

I barely use the special controller anymore, and it's still just as fun playing with the standard/normal controller. I suggest getting the other controller only if you found a good, not-so-expensive price for it. It's not that much different playing with the standard one.

I originally got NiGHTS packaged with the 3D controller, after I already had two regular controllers. I used the regular Saturn controller once for reference, and once again for a two-player battle (since I didn't have two 3D controllers).
In my opinion, the 3D controller makes the game a lot smoother to play, since you're constantly in motion. Moving your thumb around a "+" shaped pad constantly is a bit more irritating than just moving the analog control around. And I remember playing with the digital control and making a few mistakes because it was less precise. But it's really up to you which to go with. You can get the 3D controller pretty cheap these days, because the Saturn's such an "old" system. I would definitely recommend it.

I would definitly get the special controller. I tried playing with the regular controller before and it just wasn't as fun or smooth. That's just my opinion though, I guess it's really just a matter of preference since some of the people on here prefer the regualr one. Hope you enoy playing the game! ^-^

This is really a matter of opinion, but i personally prefer the special pad.
It's just easier for that circular motion.

For me the normal controller was fine but it does give you a sore thumb after a while. The fact that the 3d controller was released with NiGHTS in mind made me go out and buy it. I wouldnt say there is a massive difference but I dont get sore thumb any more. I picked mine up for about a tenner so I would reccommend it anyway. Whenever i play NiGHTS now - i instinctively go for the 3d over the normal controller.

If you’re going to buy the game and you don’t mind spending an extra few pounds I’d get the 3D Controller. It’s not going to make a totally massive difference to the game but after using both the normal pad and 3D pad in 1996 I don’t think I ever went back to using the standard one. I’m sure there’s a computer shop up in my neck of the woods selling one or two of them… I could take a look for you if you like.

I don't have a 3D Controller, and as a result, I can only play NiGHTS for about half an hour or so before my hands start caning. The 3D Controller is definitely worth the purchase, especially if you end up buying more saturn games (which I highly suggest you do)

I don't have the 3D controller, but it does seem like it would be much easier to play.. or at least if you're the type like I am that uses more of the knuckle area of the thumb to use the D-pad to control movement. Gets a bit blistery after a while. It can lead to the downfall of wanting to play for hours on end but later acknowledging the pain (totally worth it, btw).

Thanks, everyone. =) I'm going to try to get my hands on the 3D controller if I can. =)

The 3-D pad wil spare you the thumb cramps. That's all you need to know.

I prefer the 3D controller. I find it's easier to control. And it's fun to show people XD every person I showed it to went "WTF! That this is freakin HUDGE!" XD;

Like everyone said, spares you the thumb cramps. Also comes with an amazing detachable cord (from the controller itself) that you can amaze friends and family with. Now how many controllers today can claim to be able to do that?

I have both controllers, but I seem to prefer the original pad. I don't actually know why, I can get 2.0 multipliers and good scores with it, and I find it more comfy. I like the Analog one too though, I love spamming para-loops everywhere.

I thought I replied to this a long time ago but I guess I didn't ! ^^; Eh heh..
I'm very very used to the regular control and in fact the 3D control completely throws me off! I was talking about something similar in the IRC with Louis, how I'm really good with aiming the slingshot/bow and arrow without a Wii pointer or targeting with Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess (GC Version). I guess I just always take the more difficult route with games. @_@ But I didn't even get a 3D control until a years after I got NiGHTS and a Saturn, which is probably why I'm not used to it.

I haven't yet had the chance to play the game myself, but I'd say if you can find the controller for a cheap price (mine was $7.00 including shipping), I don't see why not.

Thanks, I got the controller about a week ago with my copy of NiGHTS, and overall I can see that there's definitely a marked difference in how the game 'feels' with the different pads. I actually prefer the standard saturn controller for some reason (I'm just weird XD ), but I also like using the analog every now and then for fun.
