When I first got JOD I could have shown it had the worst controls ever but I was determined to see what happen in this quirky tale of dreams and a flying jester. , I hated octopaw and he didn't even do anything, I got E's on almost everything and said screw it I want to finish this game and trade it off but by the time I faced off against Wizeman defeated him I had mastered the controls to the point I did have any trouble at all except a few instances but nothing major. When I replayed the levels to get C's for the best ending I had almost no trouble at all...except Bobomba. In fact I swear the controls are better than NID but to be honest I don't have 360 analog that was practically made for NID so that maybe it. Well, what do you guys think?

Well, when I first played, I used the Wiimote to use the controls which were just awful. Then I found out from the internet that it's just better to use the Classic or Gamecube controller. Then I found the controls to be so much better than the Wiimote controls. I probably find the controls so good on the Gamecube controller because the Wiimote controls are so awful.

well, honestly. I dont know what are you talking about, I'd never found the JoD controls as "bad" the first time I played (as Helen) I got all A in the first Nightopia, I have A on all the missions (ecxept from Bomamba and Sky concert) but oh well, those are more like "camera issues".

anyway this is not the first time I've heard that JoD has bad controls but seriously, I dont see the problem with them :/

EDIT: I can use them all the nulshuck, the wiimote and the gamecube controller

Except for mindsight, which was made by Sega's most sadistic promgrammer, I never found the controls bad at all. I assume my being better now than when I started is all due to practice.

I've always played with the wiimote+nunchuk, and I don't recall ever finding the controls bad. I've always liked the game and even if I got a lot of E's and D's on my first playthrough, I knew that was just because of a lack of practice.

Well, the first time I played JoD, I could go anywhere but in a straight line, but I figured it was because I was new at it. I never thought it had bad controls (except the Wiimote). Even in the tutorial it felt like there was a lot of potential in the controls, I just had to get better. Now I have no problem getting at least Cs on most of the missions. I'm finding myself liking them more and more. :P

I went ahead and modified my nunchuk housing to be round like the Saturn pad, which helped a lot. To me NiD is much easier to control, too often in JoD I feel like I'm tilting or something, and I have to fight against it to keep my bearing. Perhaps using the nunchuk does still make it a bit more difficult,, but I think the slight adjustment in camera angle JoD has (which faces more forward than to the side, as NiD is) contributes to this disorienting feeling.

I still got my A's, but again, to me controlling JoD feels like a jumbo jet, whereas NiD feels like a fighter plane.

When I first played, it felt... exactly like playing NiD on the Saturn.

Sure, the analog's not quite as smooth, but it's not like it's completely jagged, either. Admittedly, I'm using a third-party Gamecube controller. I couldn't use the Nunchuk analog to save my life...

I had a lot of problems in the beginning too. I was happy as long as I could complete the stages.
But for me it's different. I never liked using the analogue or D-pad controllers (in any games), and I have always played console games - including NiD - using a stick controller, which is a controller option the Wii simply doesn't offer. I have, however, gotten used to the Remote+Nunchuck style now (got all A's now), but I will never be as good at JoD as I am at NiD, unless I somehow can find a useable stick controller for the Wii.

On a side note, I have actually found one level in the game where the Mindsight is useable, and even better suited (for me at least) than the Nunchuck option. And that's the Sky Concert; it's not easy, but i find it better.

I stuck with nunchuck combo and I never had problems with it, but only when I played it a second time through I was able to get ratings higher than a C on that I agree with you

Hi,

How did you modify your nunchuk housing, did you file it into a circle instead of the octagon shape?

I may find an old GC pad and do the same

I rounded it out into a circle using a Dremel with sanding bits, plus some fine sandpaper. I eyeballed it as far as accuracy goes. You can find Dremels at stores like Home Depot and such. The tough part was actually disassembling the nunchuk's plastic housing, since it requires a tri-tip screwdriver. My friend managed to get it unscrewed using a small flathead, but I had trouble with that step myself.

Cool, That is my project for the weekend .

Luckily I have a triwing screwdriver that I got of the net for repairing my DS, so that should save a bit of time :P

It took a little getting used to but overall I found the classic controller setup to be about perfect for me.

I addition to the octagon of torment, NiGHTS has no momentum, so the controls are still screwed up.

No momentum? What do you mean?

I noticed that, too. In NiD, you go slow as molasses until you dash, and then the "momentum" from that carries you at a greater speed for a pretty long time. That means you can go very fast without constantly having your thumb on the dash button. In JoD, though, the dashes wear off almost immediately after you stop pressing the button. This makes it hard to keep a long link chain without using the rocket persona, which requires you to press a button in a whole different place. It gets easier to made sudden shifts to rocket with some practice, but before you're used to it you're almost guaranteed to lose your link chain anyways because it takes you a split-second too long. To make things worse, the dash meter runs out a lot faster in JoD, making it even harder to keep up a high speed. That's my only major gripe with the JoD controls.

Very true. In NiD you almost never get caught without dash, at least after gaining some experience with the game. With JoD it's all too easy, you end feeling like an air sloth. Levels are more 'spaced out' in JoD. And the rocket is too unwieldy to use in many situations. Another example of how a small tweak in game design can really mess things up.

Nope. I've always used the Gamecube controller.

I have gotten better with the wiimote but that's not saying much. It's still a hassle to use. The Gcube controller is still my main use of control but going from NiD with a PS2 controller to JoD with the Gcube controller can be a bit awkward.
