Day or Night...

Personally, I like the night missions, because they lack time limits (I've never been a huge fan of time attack), the enemy-bashing fun, and how there's just less crap in the night missions. But that's just me- what do you think?

it's not the old "ten minutes kills you", i'll admit that. actually, the main flow the day missions have is the first mission is a run through the level and uses your lives (you have a set amount of lives, which you can make larger by finding special life containers behind the doors in the temples, but you start off with two in reserve). after the first mission, you usually have a "gather so many rings in a set amount of time" mission. granted there's loads of rings, sometimes i have trouble getting my quota reached. after that, you've either got a simple time attack, which may or may not have the gates that give you extra time, depending on what level it is (for example, the first level doesn't while the last does), or you go through a time attack with a twist- you can't smash into a specific kind of object which it littering your path. the second two missions are usually all or nothing, and dying only puts you back at a certain point you just passed, a lot like the Sonic Rivals games do.Time limits? Is the old ten minute kills-you time limit back in the day stages? I thought nowadays you can play for as long as whatever but then you get a crap score. I can't see many Sonic fans actually preferring the Werehog to regular Sonic.. I haven't had a chance to play Unleashed yet but this much I can gather without doing so
the night missions, however, are pretty much "make it to the goal ring before loosing all your lives, while smashing all enemies in your way", and (this may come from playing a lot of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon recently) personally, i perfer that just a little. but that's still just me.

Side note: It feels wrong to me that 100 rings doesn't give you lives in Unleashed.. but there seem to be more rings than ever so I guess they figure it'd be too easy or something

pretty much. i'd say i average anywhere from 150 to 200 rings at least for each level. which takes away from what the games use to be.

Well, I chose "night". Day levels are not bad, but they're too much focused on speed and often I feel I'm not in control. At least in the night levels I now what I'm doing; I really like the platforming sections where you have to grab things, and the battles are usually fun as well.

and to iViLLiAN, it's great that you like the day missions. i personally think i'd like them more if it weren't easier for (at least me) sonic to die in them. not to mention the fact i've accidentally boosted right off a cliff when i just wanted to light dash. they shouldn't have made those the same button, or bost should be a bit easier to control. but the day missions bring back a little of what the Sonic games were orriginally about- getting to the end as fast as you can. and how it switches from side-scroller to 3-D maps is pretty interesting, but i died several times in Eggman Land switching to the rollercoaster part.
oh, and maybe one more reason i perfer the night missions (and this is totally me) but i like the music a bit more. especially the Night Battle Suite. it comes from listening to a lot of jazz with my dad, and the music (with its more solid snake like feel) just suits me more. however, it's not always the case. eg- i perfer the jungle joyride music at day just a little more than that at night (even if that cello is awesome)

Do you mean to say 100 rings gives you lives only in the PS360 version? Curious..You're playing the Wii/PS2 version, right? On the X360 the main levels are all "get to the goal ring", and the lives work like in other Sonic games.

Also the jazz tune, I like it but I wish they made a jazz remix of every night level's original track so I wouldn't hear the same tune all the time. It's not bad but it can get a bit annoying.
Knowing SEGA, one of two (if not both) things happened there- they were being too cheap, or too lazy.
Then again, it's a very distinct tune that they don't really reuse anywhere else, so it helps you to know when there's enemies about. And the mini-bosses have a different tune than the regular grunts do. So you can play this game- literally- by ear, as well as by sight. Granted it's repetative, but the moment you hear it, you know it's time to fight.

Personally I can only take into account the regular "get to the goal ring" missions, since in my version the time-attack or ring-collecting missions are entirely optional, and I've never really tried them (because you have to complete the mission without losing a life, and you have to pay for each try).to Kentalin, yup, i've got the ps2 version (i don't have the other systems, and it was by the good grace of my brother that i got to play NiGHTS). but i was talking about the main missions (first part) as well as the gather the rings and time attack. i don't think they'd change that. i'm trying to take into account all of the missions on both sides (granted, i'm still trying to beat the time attack for Eggman Land, so i can only go off of what i've already seen, but i noticed a pattern, and so i'm making a somewhat educated guess.)
I don't think it's that surprising, considering the long list of differences between the two versions...Do you mean to say 100 rings gives you lives only in the PS360 version? Curious..

The night levels were fine, BUT there were way. Too. Many. Seriously, 1:4 ratio day to night? Not fun in my opinion. I loved the day stages (especially Holoska, best 'ice' music I've ever heard in a game!!!) and I would have been much happier with the game if there were more of them. Not a ton of short filler missions, which are fine too if there weren't so many of them! Why couldn't there be 'too many' day stages? I think if Mazuri and Empire City hadn't been cut, this version would have been better.
I hope Sega really learns their lesson from the Wii version of this game and start taking the console more seriously. Pfft, what am I saying? Sega learning their lesson. The Wii could have handled all of the levels from the 360 version, slightly downgraded graphics of course. Actually, they could have used graphics identical to the ones already used in the Wii version and just made the level layout the same.
YES, THE WII IS CAPABLE OF THAT. Play Mario Galaxy and tell me otherwise!
If the next Sonic game after Black Knight has a gameplay style similar to the daytime levels and features no stupid quirks like hoverboards, aliens, or wereanythings, I bet it would be perfect. Or as close to perfect as Sega can get.
Sorry about the rant. This is just one of those games that irks me, even if it is fun. At times.

Another thing I noticed was that the day missions were getting from one point to another, trying to go as fast as you could. The night stages were also like that, but in shorter installments. Best example of this- Eggmanland. I mean, to get an 'S' rank in the day mission, you've got to get there in seven (Not sure, I'll have to look that up in a bit) minutes, and the level is much longer than all the others. But with the Eggmanland night mission, they're insanely short, with loads of platforming and a few fights in between, so the map is smaller for each piece. However, if you put them all together, I'm pretty sure the night level would be about as long as the day. I think they do this becase to get the medals for time on the night missions (at least for Eggmanland), you've got to be within anywhere from seven to nine minutes, which (at least for me) was easy to make.
On the "next game after Black Knight", what they need to do is something more like a nice mix between these controls (minus having the boost and light dash as the same buttons), the same kind of re-playability that Sonic Adventure 2 had, (if any) optional mini-games, good multi-player, awesome cg, great music (in other words, more from fumie kumatani and jun senoue- once again, just me!), and a minimal cast, (like sonic, eggman, tails, and maybe knuckles. but no amy. just no. and if they're going to have a tutorial creature, don't make it high-pitched, that's why i hated omochao, and why i'm not so big a fan of chip).
And as for Super Mario Galaxy, they did an amazing job. If SEGA could let go of past rivalries just long enough to see that, and (through a miracle) learn from it, Sonic wouldn't be so bittersweet to see for his verteran-fans.
On a more general note, I've been playing through some of the day missions for medals. In the PS2 version, I think there might be more rings, because getting over 100 a level is easy. It's like the game's giving them out for free or something.

first they got them in groups to slow em down... then they used guns to make you backtrack to kill something... then they just screwed it up... NOW we need to backtrack and CAREFULLY explore to make sure we didn't miss that "key"...
OK! I've lost all hope in Sonic... my "fandom" is over...

i agree. such a thing would only make sense in holoska since it's up north, where the days would be shorter. but in places like apotos, spagonia, and especially mazuri, (didin't get to play that level, darn you SEGA!) would have longer days, and thus, longer day missions.I like the whole concept of the were-hog, but I feel that during the course of the game you spend too much time as the were-hog and not enough time as regular Sonic.
i'm still more of a night fan than day, but there could have been more day missions.

Not the game that puts Sonic back on the map but a good game none the less and way better then that complete arse of a Sonic game that came out on the 360 and PS3. A good game but next time Sonic Team more hedgehog less werehog
