EDIT: Oh, and I added music. It doesn't loop, though. When it ends, you have to hit S to turn the sound off, then hit it again to start it up again. It's strange, but I'll hopefully find a good solution soon.
EDIT #2: Actually, you don't need to turn the sound off and on. If the music has stopped, the next time you complete a lap, it will start up again.
Also, if you use the WebStart option, you will only have to wait for the music to download once, even if I update the game. Well, unless I update the music, of course.

Now that I think about it, it did! It works fine now, however. You may be having the same timing problem that someone else was having. Does the timer tick down faster than one second? I still have no idea what causes this. I have never seen this happen myself. All the timing is based on the system clock.
EDIT: Also, the second level is very fun!

Possible name for the character/game - REMi (pronouned Remy). Its got the sleep association (Rapid Eye Movement), the lower case 'i' just like NiGHTS, flows quite nicely as a title for 'REMi into Dreams', and a spooky assonance with Reala's name, perhaps suggesting some darker side to REMi (yes, I've thought about this a little too much...) Just an idea, did you have one in mind yet? Wheres this Lucid maren then? he looks like a LUCiD or a Harlequin I think...
A few things -
Love the music, wheres it from?
I'd love to see a proper 'Start' page, with a nicely drawn picture of the our new favourite blue maren, with a cool logo.
Character sprite. I think the arms are a bit lost - the GBA always had that problem too.
Just for new players, perhaps reintroduce the info blurb you had before? Perhaps at the level select page? Or even have (at the start menu) a guide page link, listing the items with pics, rules etc.
How about a compromise with the dash rings - curved, like this
That way its in the same style, but theres no confusion. My thoughts are that the game should be accessible straight away, and having no indication of the dash rings direction is unfair, because the first time you play it its an unknown factor which requires guess work, unlike the quite structured nature of the rest of the level design of stars and rings, where if your reactions are good enough, you can play a new dream once and find your way.
A dash graphics. in the orginal game, NiGHTS and Reale would spin (on the x-axis) when they dash. It doesnt need to be that, but something to make it look different from normal flight - maybe holding out an arm infront, curling into a ball, turning into a blue comet, moving the legs like a forward stroke etc
I've been thinking about the 'Return to goal' conditions. The only time I dont have fun with the game is when you've missed one item and you spend a whole lap flying around looking for that last one, missing it because its higher/lower then you were flying etc. Its annoying. the original didnt have that problem, because the game structure wasnt the same (it wasnt about collecting everything). Maybe have the return to goal come up when theres 5 or less items, but if you collect them all, you get a bonus (points, links, 15 secs instead of 10?). Not a biggie, but its a thought.
About the paraloop graphics. Wouldnt it possible to have a design of some kind (I was thinking a magic eye style thing like this) that can be shown in the space of the paraloop for a split second? A repeating pattern like that so that it didnt matter how much of it was shown? Maybe spiralling from the centre?

Well Chrono, I have to say I love NS2, great level design. I actually said 'WOW' out loud when you go under the clouds. Wicked...

Yes. You have thought about it a little too much. Heheh.

ocremix.org. It's a great game music site. It's all fan remixes of various video game songs.

I tried to redesign the arms, which helped a little, but they are still pretty hidden. It's just a weird perspective.
I'm working on getting an intro screen in place that will have the option to view the instructions. I'm still trying to decide on the logo I want to go with. In the meantime, I've put a link to them on the main page for the game.

I'll think about it.

I was planning on doing the spin dash, but the artwork is holding me back. Your blue comet suggestion did give me a good idea that would be easier to implement, though. Maybe a transparent blue energy field or something surrounding the player while dashing (making it look almost like a glowing comet).

Hmm. I'm not sure. I'll keep it in mind, though.

I might be able to fill it in with something. I'll have to mess around with some of the drawing code and see what I can come up with.

Hmm... I could use some more layered backgrounds. Maybe a cityscape or something? Like the clouds, I need them to be placed on top of each other so that, when they are scrolled at different speeds, it gives it that pseudo-3D paralax look.so, what kinda stuff should i make crono?

Seperately, so I can put them together in the game and scroll them at different rates.oooh. i can do that with buildings too. do you mean different layers separately in different files so you can do that, or all in one image?

Speaking of which, I'm available to do work on any art if you need me. Should I do something similar to what Huruyami is doing? Or, do you not need me right now, cause that's ok if you don't?
Sure. Backgrounds, backgrounds, and more backgrounds! Bwahahahaha! I could use a large variety of them, really. Especially if the layers can be mixed and matched. For example, if somebody does a cityscape, I could just have some buildings and a layer of blue sky behind them, or I could take those same buildings and layer them over the night sky with some of my clouds around them and then have a city in the clouds. As long as they are designed with layers in mind, I can do all sorts of nifty things with them.
Backgrounds should be at least 640 pixels wide (unless they are a pattern that should be repeated frequently, like the clouds), but they can be any height. Also, make sure they are saved in a lossless format, like GIF.

That's strange. I don't have that happen on my end. Does it skip not matter what level you're playing on or what you're doing? If you press S to turn off the sound, and then again to turn it back on, does it continue to skip?I don't know if this is a common problem, but for me, the music skips like a old Beatles LP, even though the game runs at full speed.
If anyone else is having this problem, let me know.
how are these:

I really like the moon. I may have to paste that in with my current star background. The building images are a little small. I'll see what I can do with them, though.

What if, after collecting a item, a semi-transparent ghost of the object that can't be collected remains? That way, you can still find your way around the track.
Excellent job on the game. Loads of potential right there, and rather addicting... I think I'll play it again. Aaand again. XD

I like the moon too, but the buldings are a bit too basic.
I was thinking of a level called 'Coral Depths'. 1st layer a blue/green water background, second would be white/grey/pinkish coral at the top and bottom, the third a few fish? Something like this?

Yep, first or second level and all the way through it, even if I'm static. I turn the music off and on and that didn't help, so I checked if my normal music players skipped but they were fine.
Edit: Oh yeah, I have a selfish request too. Can we have a pause button? It'd be mega useful.

Well, I'm still stumped on your sound problem. I may come up with a music player program for you to try that uses the same basic code as my game and see if it skips there. That might help narrow it down a little.
I've also added a pause button (P, strangely enough), but the server is, once again, reporting that it's full at the moment and I can't update the latest version. *sigh* I really need to convince them to switch to another web host.

Tell me if I should change anything in it. I'll do a night sky next....
Btw, it's about 700 pixels wide.
Edit: Night Sky!:
They need to be changed to .gif later. I will when you give me the O.K. for 'em!

Actually, those buildings look pretty good in the game. They've got kind of an abstract style that works with the whole dream idea. There are a couple issues with them that make them look a little off, though. They need to be about twice as tall as they are now (you can barely see the tops of them on most levels). Instead of a black background, a white background would be better so I can replace it with the transparency without accidentally erasing the black outlines of the buildings as well. The clouds are also pretty cool, but they don't mix with my current cloud style. They might work if they are in a seperate image from the buildings, though.hey crono, i guess you dont need me much anymore. tell me if you do.

I also didn't think to continue the side of the building on the far right on the opposite side so that it would loop. Derrr~

I like it! I can't use it in the game because all of the elements are in a single image (objects at different distances from the viewer need to be seperate images so I can scroll them independantly to achieve that 3D effect), but it gives me some good ideas. I especially like your gradient sky and window reflections. I may steal both of those. I love the clouds, too. Very Monkey Island. Heheh.I made one too, but I suck at BGs. @_@ Perspective and I are not friends.

One thing I don't recommend is adding a wannabe "NiGHTS" thing to the main character name. It looks really tacky and amateurish putting capitals everywhere but the i's. Even Sonic Team avoided doing that to any character but NiGHTS. Sorry to anyone here who conforms to that craze, but I had to throw that out there.
I think it can be symbolic of a number of things, but hey whatever

If you want, I have all the layers separate, I can give them to you. Or I can simplify it. But using the ideas from this image is fine too, I'm glad to have inspired you.I like it!
