[Zero-Shift]

Hey everybody. I don't know if anybody cares, but not long ago Sega released an updated version of Virtua Fighter 5 in arcades called Virtua Fighter 5R. There are two characters added to the roster as well as the usual gameplay and movelist tweaks. Looks good. Sadly there has been no word of a console release period. However, the game director recently said in an interview that if there is enough fan support, Sega may seriously consider bringing the title to consoles. Enter you.

If you're a fan of Virtua Fighter or fighters in general or you just want to make me happy by participating in a good cause let Sega know you want Virtua Fighter 5R. Just leave some online feedback at the following site. And don't worry if you can't read Japanese. I'll walk you through it.

I'm holding out for Super Virtua Fighter 5': Hyper Championship Edition Turbo.

I just realized that the most recent VF game I have is VF2 for Saturn. I need to get with the times!

At the SBO ( I think), the finals for VF: 4 EVO was a mirror match between two Lion players. Lion is the dead last character in the game. He is more or less completely outclassed by most of the cast. And he doesn't have any gimmicks to abuse. And yet, the finals was a two bottom-tier Lion players. That is just how balanced Virtua Fighter is.

It was actually VF5. In either case, that's the exact same example I use to illustrate VF's fantastic balance. There are tiers of course, but they're so incredibly narrow they're irrelevant in all but the absolute highest levels of play. And even then, everyone can compete. Truly marvelous. The series just got better with age.

Since there is absolutely no concrete details of a console release anytime soon, I'd recommend it, especially since I've seen new copies go for as low as ten dollars if not lower. It's not a big investment anymore, but definitely a good one no matter how much you spend. Ever since Virtua Fighter 4, the series has really been cementing itself a position as the best 3D fighter on the market, at least in my mind.

However, I think it's important to know what you're getting into. Virtua Fighter is not newbie friendly. It's extremely technical and as a result the learning curve is very steep, especially compared to its peers. In order to play at least competently, one needs to be familiar with the game's fundamentals. The mechanics are so finely tuned that button mashing will always be punished with impunity. It's a rough road at first, but with a little perseverance you'll eventually get a grasp of the game's flow, and that's when the game really starts to shine. Developing your skills in this game is so incredibly rewarding because of the difficulty involved as well as the payoff of winning a really intense fight with a good opponent. Words just can't describe it.

In a nutshell, in order to get the most from Virtua Fighter, you need to be willing to invest the time in it. You won't be rewarded as quickly as in Dead or Alive or Soul Calibur, but the the rewards are significantly greater. Also, getting a little experience under your belt could only help should 5R get a console release. Two things though should you decide to pick it up...

1. Virtua Fighter Dot Com is your best friend. The site has a guide explaining the game mechanics in depth as well as an excellent beginner section in their absolutely awesome forums.

2. Hit me up on live. I'm still not that good and have a long way to go, and having an actual human training buddy is much more enjoyable than fighting CPU's all the time. It would do both of us a world of good.

Sorry if I scared you away from this game. I really do hope you pick this up though. It would be awesome for somebody on my Live friends list to actually have this, and ever since you won that contest last year I sensed the warrior spirit in you grasshopper.

I completely agree. AM2 is usually pretty consistent in their game quality. I really hope Sega considers porting VF5R to consoles, though I couldn't blame them if they wanted to wait a while to announcement. Super Turbo HD Remix was just released and Street Fighter 4 is slated for February. This is Street Fighter's winter, and nobody wants to compete with that. Hopefully we'll hear something in spring or early summer when the only competition will be Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion. That fight is much more winnable.

My primary is Goh and his new wall throws in 5R make me want it even more.

Well...The only VF game iv'e played is VF32X and VF4. I've always played as Wolf though. I could barely use him in 5, but that was back when i didn't have a 360 and didn't know the controls. I'll try picking it up if I find it though.

Okay, I know I'm resurrecting a thread that's over a year old but I have very good reason to do so. Recently there has once again been a big push from fans to make Sega realize that demand for this game outside Japan is serious. However this is a much more serious and concentrated effort. It's not unlike what TRiP and DiGi did prior to the release of Journey of Dreams. SRK posted a good summary of the details here.

You can help bring Virtua Fighter 5R to consoles.

There are two main reasons why I'm bringing this up again. First as I already said, this effort seems much more concentrated than before. Second, after seeing how our own small fan community seemed to make a difference about NiGHTS in ASR, I'm feeling a little hopeful lately.

C'mon everybody. Let's support our fellow Sega fan community. Even if you've never played Virtua Fighter before and at least heard good things, respond in the thread below. They're looking for about 500 pages and I think we can do it. It would mean a lot to the Virtua Fighter fans and me personally. Here is the petition thread on VFDC.

Yup. Just write a brief letter to Sega and post it in the petition thread. They're just going to compile all the letter into one big document for Sega. They're aiming for 500 pages.

I'm going to try and spread the word and would really appreciate anybody who feels like doing the same.
