And while we're making baseless asumptions, I'd like to point out that Smash Bros. Brawl, given the amount of people who splooged themselves after seeing last year's E3 Trailer, will probably be the game that nintendo releases for the holiday season in order to compete with GTA4 and Halo 3. It'd make sense.

They're hardly baseless. Releasing SSBB between GTA4 and Halo 3 isn't logical at all. Look at it this way. Brawl is the best thing Nintendo has going for the Wii. It's the Ace up Nintendo's sleeve. It will sell systems and it will sell big. It's THE killer app for the system. There is no doubt that Brawl is big, but the fact of the matter is that Halo and GTA are bigger. They are every bit as capable as SSBB when it comes to selling and maybe even more since they appeal to a larger demographic. This also takes into consideration that the 360 has a better established user base than the Wii because Nintendo isn't meeting demands.

Answer me this. Suppose you were the head of Nintendo. You know SSBB will sell well, but you also know that Halo and GTA will sell better. In addition, you know when your competition is releasing their games. Now, being a company you obviously want to make the most money possible for the fiscal quarter. Do you think you could achieve this better by releasing the game in a mire of competition, or by waiting a bit and releasing the game when there is virtually no competition at all? I personally would take the latter. Being a company, it's in Nintendo's best interest to make the greatest net profit, and even when you take the Japanese market into account, Nintendo just can't achieve that goal by butting heads with Microsoft this holiday season. Both players have trump, but Microsoft has the right bower. Still, with a little strategy, Nintendo can come out on top.

Here is my guess for what will happen. Nintendo will likely let Microsoft have the holidays. They'll probably increase Wii production and release a big name title like Super Mario Galaxy to sell some systems and make a decent profit, all the while not competing with Microsoft. After the quarter is over, Nintendo releases SSBB in mid January to early February. By then, Halo and GTA hype will have died to a degree, and without any major competition, Brawl will push more systems an generally make a killing, allowing Nintendo to dominate the 2nd fiscal quarter. This is, of course, an educated guess.

I agree with you guys, the real enemy of Sega is Sony. Sony ruined Gaming for all gaming fans. They turned friendly competition between nintendo and sega into a full blown console war. Then the sweeten the blow by monopolizing all the game developers with a lie.

Iv'e always been open to nintendo consoles, I was going to buy a gamecube when sonic Heroes came out, but when I heard that it was going to be on the xbox, I said "screw it."

I'll get a wii after NiD comes out. but other than that, nintendo has nothing for me.... (although I do miss MARiO...I think I miss SONiC and NiGHTS more.)

I didn't mean to turn this into a mini-debate :( FORGiVE Mii!

Enemy? What are you, twelve? Sony didn't ruin gaming for gaming fans, in fact they're the reason gaming as going as strong as t is today and why the passtime broke into the mainstream. So what if Sega couldn't compete with it's poorly marketed products? Sony didn't kill Sega, Sega killed Sega. The only bad thing I'm seeing with Sony right now is the PS3 (and to a lesser extent the PSP), which are by no means bad products.

Anyway, that was off topic. Wii is lovely yes, I have one. Not worth buying yet though, not by a long shot. Wait for the big hitters (and by that I don't mean NiGHTS, I mean the games we can be sure will be good like Metroid and Mari).

yes actually, sony DID ruin gaming, by dumbing down gaming to al owest common denominator with zero creativity and emphasis on gaming as a lifestyle instead of a pasttime. It made gaming accessible but at the cost of KILLING creativity. Im just thankful companiesl ike Nintendo and Sega still exist to innovate while sony throws money everywhere to find something that sticks. That might sell units, but it hurts the industry creatively.
Sorry I turned this into a debate but Im very very passionate about this and how companiesl ike Sega and nintendo were held back and prevented from being everything they could be just because sony has limitless pockets and bought itself a win in the console wars.

Uh... don't you think that EA deserves some of that blame as well? They're the ones who buy up properties wholesale for mediocre videogame adaptation. These are the guys who completely bought out the rights to make NFL games. And don't get me started on how they exploit their workers.

And what about Microsoft? These guys have kept the XBox running entirely on money. Even with the Halo phenomenon, Microsoft sold the XBox at a huge loss from day one. If it weren't for Bill Gates' bottomless pockets, the XBox would've died out long ago. And let's not forget what they did to Rare. During their days with Nintendo, Rare was one of the greatest developers for any platform. Then Microsoft bought them out and their quality has been crap ever since.

Then there's the ESRB, Columbine, video game movies, Penny Arcade and so many other factors that have influenced where video games are now.

The gaming industry is in a very different place now, folks. Trying to credit all that change to one cause, no matter how big, is ludicrous. You can't change a multi-billion dollar industry on your own, even if you have thousands of employees and a bottomless bank account. Nokia learned that the hard way.

So quit pointing the finger at Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo or whoever you think is solely responsible for changing the videogame industry for the worse. They've all contributed. Them and so many more. And they're the reason why videogames are still around and going strong.

Actually I'll be 19 in June. :)

anyway, im NOT trying to start a flame, please just drop the subject.

but to any extent, sony ruined gaming for me, as well as alot of other sega/nintendo fans who agree.

you know, I can no longer go and borrow a game from any of my friends....because they ALL have ps2s and I have Dreamcast, Xbox, Xbox360 and sega saturn.....yet all they have is....ps2....

if overrated last gen graphics and mediocre DVD playback is considered FUN, then im even MORE glad that I didnt purchase a ps2.

Just saying.

I also Agree with Curiosity Inc. even Sega contributed to the current gaming market in a negative way. If you ask me, Sony did alot of damage to the market simply by exsisting. If they would have just partnered with nintendo on the Playstation add on, then sega would probably still be alive. (just barely) and Microsoft probably wouldnt even be in the market.

thats my theory. but please, if were going to talk about the console wars, lets do it elsewhere.

Unfortunately, the games industry is built in such a way that one company must fail for others to succeed.
Sony did nothing wrong, espcially from a business standpoint. If you think Games like GTA4, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, etc are dumbing down the industry and are nothing but overrated last-gen graphics, you seriously need to open your mind up and stop living in what seems to be a sort of fantardish grudge against a console that simply had better marketing and a more appealing library.

That said, the PS3 is hideously overpriced and I think they're on their way down <__< It's a good console, but there's no way I'm paying $1000AU for one

uhhh...the Playstation 2 in no way offered anything that FORCED those games to be put on it. People give sony all kinds of bogus credit for games third parties made. Newsflash THIRD PARTY IS NOT SONY. Nintendo and Sega are unique in that they not only made consoles, but also had the TALENT to develop games that sold well on those consoles. Sony never had such talent. All ASony ever did was throw money at developers to make games exclusive. Sony never had a passion for gaming like the other companies did. they just saw it as another way to take over a media market. and they pretty much made the two ACTUAL gaming companies almost irrelevant through shady marketing. Luckily Sega and nintendo are very talented strong developers and could design circles around Sonys bunch of talentless hacks. Square is talented developer. Capcom and Konami are talented developers . Sony just makes consoles. And stupidly fragile badly designed ones at that. GTA, FF, all the games that made Ps2 popular could have been done on the other systems and Ill even go as far as to say they would have been far better.

I totally agree. Sony gets alot of credit. It's almost like they brainwashed people into buying their console. It's almost like....a cult. I mean those of us without a PS2 are left out of the loop. Only those in the 'in' crowd owned a ps2. hardly anyone that I know has Dreamcast, Xbox, or even Gamecube.

all they have is their ps2...and thats it.

are you telling me that you see nothing wrong with this picture? it used to be where if you went to a friends house, they had either a Sega or a Nintendo. And you would just...PLAY. there was no real war, only friendly competition.

but now a majority of people only own PS2s....and thats it. Don't get me wrong, I know there are people who own JUST gamecube and JUST an Xbox....but we ALL know that Sony gets most of that exclusivity.

ENOUGH!!! no more dashing this topic to peaces.

Final verdict: sony sucks. Everyone else Rules. Im buying a wii for a cheap price.

Agreed. Somehow this thread has mutated into an emotional debate about old console wars and now the straw men are running rampant. Let us get back to discussing the Wii. At least it's relevant to NiGHTS.

No, I think that's just the camera angle.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the recent Nintendo Power article said they were sticking with on-rails flying. How that will translate into solid Wii-mote control with a good camera system, I don't know.

Im not too sure about this whole wii-remote thingy. Personally im looking forward to playing the new game with the more traditional controller. I'll definetely give the remote a go but I think I would have a classic controller on standby!

im sorry for going off tangent but I tend to agree wholeheartedly with TK that Sony turned gaming into a me-too sort of fad and stifled more creative developers who got lost in the massive fray of more generic bigger selling games. Buuut to bring this back to the topic, I think the wiimote style of control was planned at the very beginning.

So my question to people is: If Sega had made the controller, but it was similar to the wiimote wand, and it was for Air NiGHTS on DReamcast, would you really have preferred to stick to traditional analog or would you be more willing to try it out? Remember Nintendo just so happens to have done exactly what Sega PLANNED to do so they basically are making NiGHTS2 exactly like they wanted Air NiGHTS to be.

Another thing I noticed is that the screenshots, though unfinished, also dont seem to thow the likely sidescrolling angles Iizuka tlaks about. Its almost as though the shots we see are the pre-alpha build offrails or something in the eartly experiemental stages. This coupled with the complete lack of all in level game elements makes me thing this had to simply be early early shots and what exists right now is likely far more advanced and more likely far more beautiful and in depth. I cant wait for updated screens.

Pro Tip! NINTENDO and SEGA make hardware.
EAD and Sonic Team (Sega has a few more inhouse developers as well, but this is their main one) make the console's games. They are actually seperate companies owned by nintendo and sega respectively and have close ties. Believe it or not, SONY and MICROSOFT also have in-house developers (Such as the people who made Legend of Dragoon), they are just not as known/don't produce as successful games.

The arguement I was rebutting was that ALL (Generalisation, I assume) games on the playstation consoles were dumbing down gaming and relying on flashy graphics to make sales.

One could argue that, in regards to passion, no games company has a passion for games- even the 'gaming gods' themselves, Nintendo. Sure, the individual people making the games might have (although funnily enough, all the people in the industry I've met pretty much don't play games, except for the odd bout of World of Warcraft), but as a whole, the company has to have one passion; profit. It's the point of ANY business. After all, What's the point of all this passion and dedication if you don't have the money to pay for not only making the game, but making sure your game stands out in the marketplace due to advertising? I hate to break it to you, but after studying the games industry in a prior university course I did, games developers aren't the fantastical candy-factories you're giving the impression you believe they are.

As for the issue of whether third party developers would have done those games better on other consoles, I'd say probably not. As you said, Sony throws money at 3rd party developers to sell their consoles for them (I agree with you there) think; sony are a rich company- not as rich as microsoft, but richer than nintendo by far (don't quote me on this though, I'm not aware of exact statistics). If sony hadn't of stepped in, those companies wouldn't have had the million dollar budgets they do have to spend on hiring the best people for the job and extending development time to ensure a more polished game at the end, and thus, the quality of the game arguably would be poorer (regardless of the console's power)

In fact, I'd be willing to say that if Sony hadn't stepped in and upped the anti in the games development world (in terms of budget, marketing, and production), the gaming industry wouldn't have progressed as far (due to other companies not needing to compete with sony) and perhaps (this is purely speculation) the games industry would have become a LOT slower in development as a whole.

TK, There are probably a lot of reasons that your friends don't own consoles other than the PS2; the general opinion of people your age is that Nintendo is for children (Definitely not the case), The Xbox was very expensive when it was launched (plus it was marketed generally to an older audience), and they probably hadn't had much experience with games before they got it (or the PS1, if they had one). When I got my PS2 (a year after getting my Gamecube, mind you), I was AMAZED at the STUPIDLY LARGE amounts of CHEAP GAMES! *lol* I went o na budget-game-spending-spree, mainly because gamecube games never fall under $70AU :S so there's that to take into account.

But then again, I don't know your friends so I can't say, but there are a lot of reasons that could explain it.

And please, don't take any offense to this; I know it is off topic (and that you've asked to stop discussing it) but in case you havn't noticed, it IS a topic that I am very passionate about (the games industry as a whole) and I'm actually enjoying a semi-intelligent debate (read: not arguement) about it! :D

BACK ON TOPIC (Yeah, sorry for straying there but like I said, I love the topic), I would've been surprised if NiGHTS didn't come out on the wii, considering AirNiGHTS had a very similar style of controller planned to ship with it. Any information on this? *Looks at TRiPPY and DiGi*

But If they DID make a motion sensing controller for the DC (I still call it the dc : / the people have No clue wtf im talking about.) I would have bought it, and STILL felt akward.

but thats mostly because I hate change. If it ain't broke....don't fix it.

my oppinion about the ps2/3 hasnt really been stated here. Only my jokes, and generalizations. Most sega-game based forums don't mind sony-dashing Jokes. At any rate, My real opinion about sony is, theyre an OK company thats being much too overhyped to be a TOTALLY AWESOME company, and in the ending result all the REAL companies are being overlooked and underrated. (however this current generation is prooving a different outcome.)

my opinion on Sony is like this; I live in California, EVERYONE in my general area drives a honda. They claim that honda is the absolute BEST car. Some of them, just barely getting thier licences claiming that honda is THEE best car.

well of corse honda is THEE best car, thats the only car youve ever driven!! there are companies that been around longer than honda who deserve alot more credit! It's like people are going with what the crowd says instead what they WANT.

Im sorry if I came off as biased, but i do repect sony, It's their fans that I don't respect.

Yup, I already have one and it's worth it!!!! NiGHTS just makes it so much better. I'm also waiting for RE: Umbrella Chronicles and you can't forget Super Smash Bros. Also, you guys I have the original Saturn now and wonder why it couldn't compete with the PS1 as it's an awesome console!!! But, you can't blame Sony for making the Playstation brand a household name. It's bussiness and just like the PS2 and PS1 before it, with the PS3 I believe they are also trying to redefine gaming. Proof of this is how much research and development they put inside the PS3 s game designers can really fulfill games that are "complete and satisfying."

Planing on getting a Wii because of all the neat games that are coming out for it, like NiGHTS Journey into Dreams game that's comming out this year, and the always neat Paper Mario. But I may have to get the games first before I get the consols because the games disappere faster than the consoles do especially if they are popular like NiGHTS is probably going to be.

/Im just glad this game will be exposed to a lot of people. At this point 7 million people can potentially be aware of NiGHTS and hopefully a good number will buy into it, or at least rent it. Nintendo and Sega REALLY need to work together and figure out a way to bring the original to the wii either in VC form or on a disc. I dont really care which and Ill buy into it however they do it (if they do). But now hopefully NiGHTS will get the attention it so vastly deserves since it is on a console very much in the public eye and selling like crazy. I always hoped NiGHTS would get this kind of attention.

Actually, I am not too well on draft in terms of the Console Wars and the lie. Could you explain? ^.^;;

And on another note, I myself already have a Wii. It was an X-mas present which I got way later... but I don't want to go too much into detail from there.

I bought the Wii because of all the great games that are out (well... I only have Wii Sports and Zelda, but that's besides the point) and the games that will be coming out (SSB Brawl, Metroid 3, and now NiGHTS of course!) but you know, all these consoles, what with this "console war" and everything... they're just hunks of silicon and plastic -- I'll follow the games. If NiGHTS came out on PS3, then I'd just have to wait until it was a bit less than $600 before I jumped on it.

I bought a Wii the day it came out and I have never regretted that decision. Even the limited supply of games I have have been worth the purcahse; Wii Sports, Zelda, Eledees and Excite Trucks. Not a huge deal has been made about those last two, but they deserve your attention. On the way to Europe is Super Paper Mario, which as someone said earlier, is a reason to buy the Wii alone and I'm sure eventually we'll see Smash Bros and Metroid, which will be a lovely day indeed.
As for buying a Wii specifically for NiGHTS? Nah.
Buy a Wii, yes, but the games I have mentioned above are probably going to be a better reason.

I'm going to agree with AndyPenguin here... I follow the games on consoles more than anything, but I don't think I'd ever make the jump to the PS3... even with a price drop it'd be too friggin' expensive.
And on that note... people are actually waiting for a price drop for the Wii? You do realise that they can't make Wii's fast enough to keep up with demand for the things. You will not be seeing a price drop for a very long time... and even then, it costs less than half a PS3 and considerably less than a 360.

Hehe, I already have a wii. I knew that if NiGHTS was going to have a sequel it would be on there.

My dad tried to get a Wii for weeks after launch day. I remember all the grumbling about how it was impossible to find one. He'd talk about how he had to get to every store on the map as soon as they opened and he still couldn't get one. I'd point out that Nintendo was producing so many and he was like "That can't be true. They have to be lying because there just aren't any out there."

So, when I peeled back the wrapping on Christmas Day, I was like "You lying sonuva..."

Yeah, I got mine Christmas too. Of course, my college roommates have logged more playtime than I have, but I was the first to finish Super Paper Mario and they barely got started on Zelda, so it's a wash.

Take a look at this.

It's rather risque, but I think it plays into the topic very nicely. And it's the best rundown of the PS3 vs. Wii debate that I've ever seen.

availability is getting alot better. Ive actually SEEN Wii's in the wild a couple times :)

One thing I do like is that a large japanese game developer consortium has said many of the japanese developers are shifting their main focus to the wii based on its runaway sales there. This means more games like Dewey and Zack and wiki (I prefer the name Treasure Island Z) and possibly more mainline games and not just spinoffs. A good time to be a wii console owner for sure :)

ON a personal note, Ive discovered my Wii has a glitch. It seems that I was rather dumb and left it on Wiiconnect24 for weeks in a stuffy apartment room on the carpet. Ill admit now that I think about it, I was careless. Hopefully Nintendo will repair it in time for the good games that are coming. Basically the problem I have is the GPU overheated, and now glitchy pixels show up very obviously in games, no matter what input or TV I try it on. So Im just warning everyone to be careful and not use wiiconnect24 while the console is on carpet.

I'd say I'll probably purchase a Wii for JoD. Looking at the range of games that are available for the console at the moment, there's a decent enough catalogue to justify it. I usually start a console with one or two games, and buy a new one every so often, so I'd have to say yeah, I'll buy when when NiGHTS is released.

If you don't get a wii for Journey of Dreams get a wii because it's the best system out there. I'm gonna suggest you also buy rechargable batteries. You'll save lots of money by not going to stores to buy batteries.

as a owner of a wii I can say that video is VERY accurate.

I am! I wouldnt be getting a new console for quite a while yet if it weren't for NiGHTS. Where NiGHTS goes, I go. No question.

Ive honestly been starting to dream about possibilities of the wii game. Literally. a few NiGHTS ago I was playing it in my dream. It was badass. It makes me really really anxious for the end of this year. It seems so far away.

I've been considering purchasing a Wii for sometime now. Mainly for the purpose of playing the long awaited sequel to NiGHTS.

However, I can't really afford another console, but was thinking about selling my xbox 360 in favor of a Wii. I bought a 360 for Resident Evil 5, Tomb Raider installments, and one of the best games ever, Shenmue II.

I honestly believe its worth buying a Wii for NiGHTS. I even bought a gamecube just because I heard rumors that NiGHTS would appear on it (and I also bought it for Resident Evil games).

I figured if I bought a Wii i'll still get Resident Evil love which Umbrella Chronicles and the Wii Edition of Resident Evil 4. I'd be missing out on Resident Evil 5 though. Also, its possible shenmue III might appear on the xbox 360, but it's also very doubtful. As for tomb raider, I'd still have my PSP for the anniversary edition, but wouldn't be able to play Tomb Raider 8 (next gen). However, I might build a decent PC in the future, but who knows.

Well, I've been debating over a wii for a while now, I also haven't been able to find one all year. Could someone please tell me if its worth buying a Wii for mainly one game? I hunted for a saturn back in 2002 just to play this game. My first saturn ended up smoking out, so I actually ended up purchasing a new saturn for NiGHTS. I must say I'm glad I experianced NiGHTS.

I suggest that you wait to see how the sequel turns out first. If the sequel turns out good, then you may go ahead and buy a Wii to play the game. I got a Wii. The games I currently own are Zelda: TP and Super Paper Mario. They are the best games so far in my opinion.
