Anybody got any theories on why there's mostly carnival and circus stuff in the Night Dimension. Donbalon, Chameleon, helen's mirror museum, Will's rollercoaster level, Night's a jester/juggler class, Reala's a Clown, if Jackle would be like a fortune teller/illusionist/sleight of hand performer (if he were in the game) and Wizeman kind of like a puppet master (from Lost Kingdom) Also he looks like a floating circus tent. Anybody got any other observations?

Never ask "why" when it comes to art.

Never ask "why" when it comes to dreams.

Well, I could give you the realistic reason or an imaginative reason. I assume you want the imaginative one, so here goes: Wizeman was bored and wanted some entertainment. Other observations: Clawz could be the tiger or lion that the tamers do their act with in the circus.

You do not question the dreams. The dreams question YOU.

Writing, drawing, art in any way, shape, or form, hard rock music, dancing wildly even though I can't dance for crap. I write poetry and lyrics (although they're not very good T__T) and comedy movies. I love the Dreamcast podcast that DiGi and TRiPPY put on. I also enjoy thinking outside the box. I'm what is known as a Meathead. I can laugh at myself, think outside the box, and smile. Meatheads are smarter than your average Joe, with much more common sense and the rare ability to find creative solutions to problems. My idol is a man named Jimmy Dolittle. Look him up ^.~

Circuses and carnivals can be fun or scary depending how you shine the light on it. Like how clowns can be entertaining and yet horrible to some. Basically it's a twofer in dreams. P:

Lol! You know, I wonder how much truth is behind that? I don't know what acid does to you but probably something really f***ed up! And I understand what some say about not questioning dreams but it must be done in order to feel any sense of understanding that which we don't. There, my 2 cents. :D

Maybe Yuji Naka was going through a circus phase when he designed the game.

The way I view it the circus always has an inviting yet terrifying stench about it...
during the day you see happy clowns giving cotten candy to childeren, lights, music, overall a fun time.
However, there are other fears present in such a place
imagine what I just mentioned... now imagine it at night...
everyone's packed up and left the lights are out and strange ppl are moving about the area with their identities protected by a thick layer of makeup... your alone in a strangers world where no one knows who you are and no one to save you... when...a

Man that Ronald is creepy..."I already kow where the Children are! I love everything that they do!" *shudders* :)

Yuji Naka has a bizzare obsession with Casinos and Carnivals- what Sega game DOESN'T have a circus-y motif? Even House of the Dead has carnival levels...

For some reason that I will never understand, people are afraid of clowns. That's most likely where the idea came from.

Hmm, maybe Wizeman wanted to create his own style of scaring people... I mean, why bothering creating so many different nightmarens with details and behaviors on their own, if you could also just send some ugly zombies to scare the people. Also, a circus always has some kind of bizarre feeling around it, because the people who live there are so different from ordinary people.

All I can seriously think about is drugs. Looking at their past I wouldn't be surprised if SEGA and Nintendo were puffing the magic dragon for some game ideas. I ain't hatin though. Smoke on game companies :(

Yeah, I think that's part of it. Although some kids will be afraid of the entire circus. It's unusual, strange, and even a little scary, but you can't help but be entranced by it. Probably the fear of clowns is from children's fear of costumed people in general. The adults/older kids who are scared of clowns might have had unpleasant experiences with such as a child.

I don't think anyone has a real definitive idea of what was going through the designers' collective minds, but then it's not exactly the point of this topic to come up with any single answer. XDD *pointing out the utterly obvious*

I have two theories.

1) After finishing redesigning NiGHTS so he wasn't a bird anymore (which was a sad but unavoidable thing), the designers realized he was rather jester/acrobat-like and decided to go with a circus motif.

2) Circuses are both child-friendly and potentially frightening, which makes it an optimum motif to base Nightmare off of.

I personally prefer the latter theory, but given that NiGHTS was originally a bird, the former's probably closer to the truth, but again, that's not really the exact point of this thread. ^^;;; *thinks far too much and far too loudly*

Because everyone are not scared of the same thing - I know at least three persons who think zombies are awesome, for example. Also, if you dreamed the same thing all the time you would probably suspect something weird was going on. I doubt Wizeman would want that.
