This subject has come up a lot for me recently, so I want to hear from all of you:

When you dream, do you dream in color? Or in black in white?

I haven't done enough research into the subject to say for sure, but apparently people who dream in color are very rare. Or maybe it's that dreaming in color is rare. What say you?

For my part, I've always dreamed in vivid color.

May add poll later, we'll see.

So far, all of my dreams have been in color, unless I'm dreaming about reading a manga of course. But that may have been due to the fact that most of my dreams resemble animation. Is that the case with you as well?

I think it's dreaming in Black and White that's rare.

And my dreams are as colorful as a rainbow 8D.

I'm 99.9% positive that my dreams are always in color as well. I've heard that thing about black and white and color but I dunno what to think really. I've heard the notion that you can also subconsciously add color when you think of your dream *shrug* It's just hard to imagine someone always dreaming in black and white, if at all..

Color, for sure. Every time I recall a dream I remember seeing things in strikingly realistic colors and tones. Never really excessively vivid though. Although now that I think about it I do remember a single dream I had in black and white many, many years ago. I probably had it because I watched old-school cartoons all day :)

A select few dreams of mine have been in nothing but black & white. I think more of them tend to be monochromatic (which seems to be helpful sometimes in the deciphering of what the dream means to me, based on the reasoning and psychology of colors and their representation).

Some dreams I've had were black and white with only one or two objects that are vividly colored.. (really cool, I need to draw 'em...)
but most of the time - I tend to remember my dreams as being in color. Those are the ones that I remember having, but wasn't terribly involved in. Others, it seems like a half-painted cel where there *are* colors, but some of it's just shaded like an unfinished sketch.

I pretty much always dream in faded colors, normally gray or sepia tones. I can't remember having many dreams with vivid colors, and I don't think I've ever had one in black and white.

I write poetry and lyrics (although they're not very good T__T) and comedy movies. I love the Dreamcast podcast that DiGi and TRiPPY put on. I also enjoy thinking outside the box. My dreams are always in color. Always. Sometimes I wish it weren't so I wouldn't have to blind myself when I'm asleep because my dreams are always in such bright colors that I will honestly wake up in the morning and not be able to SEE.

I don't believe I've ever had a dream in anything else but realistic colour. I can't remember having a dream with dull colours, monochromatic nor black and white. Vivid, yes, as I've had dreams I was stuck inside one of those pinball machines that you'd see in a Sonic game.

I dream in color with varying intensity.

I find it very odd that people can make bold statements like "nobody can see color in their dreams" or "people in dreams never have faces" as if they are scientific standards. I have heard both these claims before (color being rare is close enough) from students in a class I had on dreams. What makes them so strange is the fact that they seem so incredibly obviously simple to determine as false.

And ta think... our taxpayers dollars go into studies like this >:P BAH!
Anyhoo, maybe certain color variations in dreams are rare, just a thought...? My dreams are in the colors you'd expect to see in real life shaded the exact same way with attention to detail... for this reason I often mistake dreams for reality.
Like that dream I had that I bought NiD and a Sega Saturn... BOY was I ticked when I woke up... I didn't even get a chance to plug it in ;_(

Same. It's like saying "No one can divide 7 by 3" You can 8D! It's just odd and slightly irregular (not as much as IMAGINARY NUMBERS, though) .

And it's 2.3(repeating) if anyone is interested.

... not the best example, I know >>.

I'm off on a tangent, but I'd like to say this:

Y'know, I wonder if partially that when we wake up, we remember our dreams as being in color. I've seen tons of black and white movies, but when I look back to remember them, I regard them as though they were actually in color (hah, and mainly the movie that comes to mind was Clerks.. it was filmed B&W but sometimes I tend to think of it as having been in color).

Like I said earlier, the dreams I really take note on, I recall without any flaw in my perception as being one way or the other... and the others that I remember but didn't really take too much part in have their own tones.

Color, with a few fairly rare exceptions.

Mostly, the dreams are in rich color, but the area I dream in always seems to be either dark, very cloudy, or stormy. I have only ever seen the sun in dreams a few times, and rarely stars. This tends to make my dreams look about half-monochrome, though it's just... always dark. As in twilight dark. You can still see fine, but it's just almost nighttime dark.

There's a lot of areas in my dreamscapes that look either dead or dying, and that doesn't help much for color. :P

Anyone else ever dream in a darkened state like that?

Wow, such variations. From what I'm reading, we all dream in color for the most part, but some of us have experienced different combinations. Ah, dreaming is such a strange and wonderful phenomena. ^^

To all who've asked about what counts in this discussion, I say anything goes. Tell us what you've experienced. It all makes for interesting conversation.

I spoke with my dad about this and he tells me he dreams in black and white. So far he's the only vote for that column.

Dreams are usually in color, from time to time they revert to some color of all blue, all gray scale, all red, all yellow, something along those lines - but even then you can tell if someone is wearing a green shirt in a red dream even if it looks red by the lighting...

...I'm rambling. My grandparents however, dream in their words black and white, which I find particularly fascinating.

I always dream in color, but whenever I have a really bad nightmare it's in black and white with one person or thing in color (and I'm never in color myself). For example, I had this one dream where this vampire dude was trying to kill me. Everything was B&W except for the vampire dude, who was bright pink. Another example is when I dreamt that my school was being overrun by zombies. I ran into the bathroom for some reason, and then sonic the hedgehog busted in, flailing around a bright red bloody knife, and he's blue of course.

Also, just as a thought, maybe older people dream more often in black and white. I'm saying this based on the last three comments. My dad suggests, and I quote, 'that it may just be the fact that most everyone has been exposed to black and white pictures, cartoons, and movies. Even some cartoons have black and white parodies in them.'

...But I'm rambling now.

Usually color. Sometimes black & white if I'm dreaming of manga. My vision tends to go weird as I'm waking up, bleaching out the colors or turning everything black.

When I remember dreams when I'm awake, I remember colors but sometimes they're faded. If I'm lucky enough to go lucid and take a good look at where I am, it's in very bright colors.

All my dreams are technicolored or digital painted dreams. Some cell painted like cartoons, but the only time I might have black and white dreams is if by memory or recalling past events. There are special times when they are fully black and white like detective dreams, but it's very rare. I think it's kinda hard to dream in black and white especially working out the shades of gray.

My brother was complaining the other night about how he always dreams in black and white, and with little abillity to focus. He said he had a lucid dream the other night, and he couldn't figure out how to do things in his dreams that he couldn't do normally. He said he tried walking on water, but he just fell right though.

He was jealous of me, since I always dream in color in high detail, but the color is rarely accurate, like for example imagine mint green grass with a blue-green sky. I also have no problem doing fun stuff in my dreams, like the last time I was lucid, I flew easily. The whole time I was thinking about Nights, since I had played the game on my Saturn for the first time just a few days earlier. BEST DREAM EVER. I rarely lucid dream, maybe once or twice a year, but that dream made my whole week. I woke up crying because I was so happy.

I dream in color. It varies from realistic color, to grainy color, to the odd PSX/Saturn level of detail 3D dream. I think I had one of the characters from House of the Dead in a dream, not a zombie, just one of the random mooks you control. Or maybe it was a Mr. Blondie from Perfect Dark.
