I got into NiGHTS through JoD. I never played the original. And I'm sure there are a lot of recently new members to this community now who are in my boat. We're n00bs and we admit it.

This hasn't happened to me or anyone I know personally, and thanks to very nice moderation/administration on these boards, not here in particular, but ever since I got into this fandom, I've noticed that while JoD fans have been generally accepted, there's still a lot of discrimination.

I know there will naturally be a rift between us, fans who started on NiD and those who started on JoD, but we all are united by NiGHTS. Am I wrong? So I speak now to those who take this discrimination too far:

To purists...people who believe that NiD is the one and only NiGHTS.
You have the right to love or hate JoD. Hell, you can even deny that it exists or is part of the franchise. But when you tell someone they're not a fan of NiGHTS just because they've never played the original is being very cruel and unjust. It's not easy to come across a SEGA Saturn anymore, a copy of the original NiGHTS or Xmas NiGHTS, or even to mod your PS2/buy a JP PS2 to play the PS2 remake. The circumstances are against those of us who genuinely want to play the original and get the full experience. The truth is that NiGHTS is what inspired our love for JoD, and for the majority of us, that love of NiGHTS makes us long to play the original too. We really wish we could play NiD because we love NiGHTS just as much as you do.

To OC pairing haters...people who don't want to see fans pairing NiGHTS Marens with our own.
When you first got into NiD, how old were you? Fairly young I'd assume. But now, 11 years later with the release of JoD, you're probably all much older, more mature, and much wiser. I'm sure that when you first got into the fandom, you wanted to make your own Marens. You yearned to be a dreamer who visited Nightopia. And those of you who led particularly downtrodden or unlucky lives wished you could meet NiGHTS and have him whisk you away through the skies of your dreams where your imagination could run free and you could shed your real life dramas/obligations. The truth is that we all love NiGHTS. (At varying degrees.) And you have to realize that JoD was OBVIOUSLY directed at a younger audience. The fandom was bound to pick up lovestruck, immature preteens wanting to create MarySues/GaryStus that paired themselves up with NiGHTS characters, just like I'm sure a lot of you wanted to do when you were young and in love with NiD. (I'm not saying everyone did this, because everyone matures at different ages, I'm just saying that it's only natural when you're at those young, impressionable ages.) Please be accepting and tolerant of these fans. I know it disturbs some of you, and if that happens, I beg you to hold your tongue before you say something that you regret. If you've got nothing nice to say, then don't say anything at all and ignore it. They love NiGHTS just as much as you do, they just express it differently, and imagine if someone scolded your work like that for a moment. I've seen quite a few artists already who have stopped drawing/writing about NiGHTS in particular, just because people flamed them for depicting themselves paired with NiGHTS characters. It's the way they display their love and devotion for NiGHTS, just give them time to outgrow the phase as you did, please?

Please let NiGHTS be the creature that unifies us, not the one that tears us apart.

PS--I apologize if this has been brought to attention before; feel free to delete this topic.

I haven't met much discrimination myself...but I am as knowledgeable of NiD as JoD.

I was five years old when NiD came out. I didn't get into the gaming hobby until about two years later. By then, the Saturn had fallen under the shadow of the Dreamcast. I would not hear of the Saturn, much less NiD, until I begun my fandom into the Sonic franchise with Sonic Adventure. But the Saturn and its games had ended production and could only be found at garage sales and eBay...but my acknowledgment of NiD was not enough to fuel enthusiasm to buy a Saturn and a copy of the game.

If my situation would have been different, I would've joined the fandom with NiD. But it didn't work out that way.

I too was about 5 when NiD came out. I recall being really little in the store and wanting it, but my world revolved around me NES and my Playstation, so I forgot about it until I saw the JoD commercial. I really wish I had gotten it when I was little.... it makes me feel like a wannabe fan :(
But non-the-less, I witch hunted till I went through my dead uncles old stuff... my brother said Uncle Jim had a sega. I found the box and there it was.... the dreamcast. Cursed dead uncle Jim for a week. Found both NiD and xmas NiGHTS on an emulator site. Became happy but I still feel like a wannabe fan.
I havn't gotten any discrimination yet, but the boy in my history clas said he got flammed so much that he shut down his DA account. :)

I'm not JoD fan hater. I just call those that just got into NiGHTS through JoD noobs but only out of fun not out of insults. It's cool more peeps like NiGHTS nowadays. You guys are in the same boat with a lot of us NiD fans because you as well want that remake all over the world. You want more people to accept the games as much as us NiD fans. The only thing I can find conflicting is that a lot of JoD fans like the fact NiGHTS has a voice where as lot of NiD fans are still uncomfortable with it, me included. By the way I got into NiGHTS at age 10.

I can agree with you on the point in which the games are geared toward the youngins. It's just that (to me anyway) NiD felt more geared towards everyone and anyone that played it whereas JoD feels like it's mainly meant for kids. It's like the story was beefed up and dumbed down at the same time.*Opinion over.

I should hope that no fan is telling another that they are not a fan for liking JoD. Thats rather upsetting. The JoD "kids" are just our new generation, there's nothing wrong with that. And maybe it means as much to them as NiD does to us. We can't know what it feels like, so why not just let us know? I think I'd like the idea of the JoD fans who actually love it, sharing with us if it has impacted them in some way. Maybe it'll help break the ice between one side and another.

I really think that there shouldn't be crazy feuding over something thats supposed to bring so much happiness. It just poisons the whole thing.

I've made the point (in private) before that we are a fanbase brought together by our love and passion for NiGHTS, not the NiGHTS games. Just have one look around the thousands of artistic works on both here and deviantArt, the many roleplaying threads that have their own forum, and the countless discussions surrounding nightopia and our actual dreams. I personally believe that being a fan of NiGHTS signifies something entirely different from just liking a game. Sure, enjoying one or both of the games is probably a common side effect, but I can't even begin to explain how much of an influence being a fan has had on my life, even if it's just through me gaining a better understanding of my dreams or giving me more motivation and drive to do things I'd rather not have.

As for the whole NiD/JoD divide, I knew it was going to happen. If you prefer one game over the other, so be it. Each game has its strengths and weaknesses, and some I'm sure prefer a game with a more interactive storyline. But if you're immature enough to consider JoD-exclusive fans inferior because the game isn't really "NiGHTS," then I think you should look for a different fansite. It's fine to prefer NiD over JoD (as many of you, myself included, probably do), but NEWSFLASH: Everyone's entitled to their opinion. And if you're unable to accept that on a website then I have no pity for you when you face the rest of the world. In fact, let me see that one day. I'll bring a tub of popcorn and a Big Gulp. That should be entertaining.

We all love NiGHTS. Let's not let the games themselves stand in our way of that.

I too admittedly joined the site after JoD and have yet to play NiD. HOWEVER, I was a fan for several years BEFORE the release of JoD, why? One reason...
NiGHTS
Just you played a "better game" does not make you the superior of the fanbase... I cannot say that I have seen any definite prejudice against the latter generation of the NiGHTS fanbase but I will say that it "taints the atmosphere" abit sometimes, you all know who you are... I can't say that JoD was "the best" heck, I haven't even played NiD but I can still see it's an amazing game, but all in all I'm no better than any other NiGHTS fan whether ya joined 6 min. ago or 11 years ago. Get ta know us don't bark if ya don't know whats on the other side of the fence, get me? JoD is a game, and NiD is a game, but NiGHTS is something else entirely, NiGHTS is an inspiration, idol, character, friend, guide, legend, and a heck of alot more... sorry if I weirded ya'll out but that's the way it is... take it or leave it.
P.S. I've been in a bad mood as of late and I put some emotion into this... Please tell me if I have offended anyone.

Nothing pleases me more than seeing young fans pop up who've never played the original and got into the fandom through JoD. The reason i enjoy it so much as an admin is because i remember being 14 and hyperactive, being a newbie and annoying the crap out of people who had been in the fandom longer than me. I said sod it all and just continued enjoying things my way, as should JoD fans do. Everyone is entitled to an opinon, but don't mistake some old fans hating on the new game as telling people they arent 'real fans ™'. If someones telling you guys directly you suck because you've never played the old version, lol then just bloody ignore them. Why are you going to let someone tell you your love for NiGHTS means more or less than someone else? It's silly.

Just do what you do, grow with us and learn to love the quirks. I think you'll find some of the oldest OLDEST fans from back when the first NiGHTS website went online who still exist today couldn't give a hoot about moaning at youngsters. We're all rather motherly to be honest because you guys are a new wave of fans that the fanbase has needed for many years. Nothing wrong with that at all.

NiGHTS is NiGHTS.

Heh, that was pretty dang well said... I have a pretty short fuse for jerks who push newbies around callin em noobs (those of you who don't know noobs is an insulting term, newbs is friendly jus wanted ta clear that up) :) Some gamers are sensitive to others opinions I jus hate ta see ppl prayin upon them like that. Well... I've simmered down now... back ta life :(

Everyone is entitled to an opinon, but don't mistake some old fans hating on the new game as telling people they arent 'real fans â„¢'.

It's not the hating on the new game that bothers me, it's when people take that extreme hate for the new installment too far and redirect it at its fans. There are so many times I've seen people rant in comments and on forums about how people who love JoD or pair themselves with NiGHTS characters should be stabbed, killed, or beaten. I know it's not to be taken literally, but it still bothers me that, even metaphorically (?), an NiD fan would wish death on a JoD fan.

The first time I saw severe heckling like this, I personally began to doubt myself being a fan... I worried that I may end up being threatened soon too and began drawing depressing pictures of NiGHTS losing me cause he didn't want me (like with Helen) or Reala beating me up. I never told anyone that because the phase was short, only a day or so because I realized rather quickly that I need not question my devotion to/love for NiGHTS, but it was a phase nonetheless.

If someones telling you guys directly you suck because you've never played the old version, lol then just bloody ignore them.

I'm sure most of us internet regulars are used to criticism like this and can ignore it fairly well, but this rant was to defend those who are young, new to the internet, and seeking peers who share their love for NiGHTS...as well as those with weak self-esteem as well I suppose. It's really hard to find fellow fans locally IRL, so the internet is the only place to look.

Simply put from experience of being both a young and old fan (who has had her fair share of sh!t), if NiGHTS means so much to you it doesn't matter what other people think. You do your own thing. The internet is a big bad place full of people who will lawl at you whether youre a long time fan or a new one. Its better to toughen up sooner than later and realise you wasted 5 years being emo about what someone else thought about your beliefs.
Nobody here bashes JoD fans for being new, therefore impressionable kids who somehow(?) find themselves with being burnt at the stake for creating a recolor marysue like every other fan here, are surely in the wrong place to consider being accepted anyway. Its sort of like going to 4chan and expecting to get cookies.

This is a NiGHTS forum for NiGHTS fans. Be it Jod, NiD or whatever other bunch of letters SEGA throw us. It's up to other fans to take care of the young 'uns.

Incidentaly, any youngsters being threatened directly with death/stabbing/acid in face for being a NiGHTS fan should direct their PM's to me. Lol.

See, this is what irritates me the most. This kind of thing doesn't even stop with lovers of just one game -- I've seen people that get picked on because they like Pokemon, for instance. It doesn't matter what age you are, and this isn't a "You like the first generation better than the second/third/fourth" or some such nonsense -- this is a hatred for that series in its entirety.

NiGHTS runs the same way -- some people dislike the entire idea so much that they find it necessary to make someone who does feel horrible. Not just a JoD versus NiD -- the whole thing.

I didn't get the chance to play NiGHTS into Dreams. At the time that I would have been able to buy the game and console, I was unable to -- for several reasons. Do I regret it now? A little. But not enough to kill my love of the idea behind the games. Do I still want to play NiD? Without a doubt -- yes! But for now, I'll have to wait until SEGA decides to bring the PS2 port over to the west. (Hint, hint.)

When Journey of Dreams came out, it brought my attention back to something I loved, and I became even more of a NiGHTS fan. NOT a JoD fan -- NOT a NiD fan. A NiGHTS fan -- meaning both games and all that comes with it.

We're all part of this fanbase -- we're all fans of NiGHTS, and what he stands for. And to anyone out there who has a problem with us -- Get over it. We're Dreamers -- and nothing is ever going to change that.

At least you've played either one of the games; I'm trying to keep from looking at spoiler-clips so I can really enjoy JoD should I ever get to play it, as much as I wish to get a better insight into NiGHTS's character right now.

But I agree; people that obscenely aggressive about their opinions should either learn to reign it in for the sake of the community's well-being or find a group of like-minded people so they can perpetuate their opinionated outlook without hurting the fanbase. The mood of a fanbase can make or break a game if it doesn't have a large enough following to withstand such blows (in the way of sales) already.

Um... gonna go eat lunch now... XDDD

You bring up some very important points, Polaris, and I commend you for having the guts to talk about it.

To your first point:

There will ALWAYS be trolls on the internet, trolls being A) People who have nothing better to do than annoy or piss people off, or B) Console/First Gen Game Fanboys who live to tell others that they (are) suck/stupid/whatever for liking anything else. Hence we have Rule #13 of the Internet: Do not argue with Trolls--it means they win. If someone's giving you crap about liking JoD or NiGHTS period, just ignore them. Take anything they say with a grain of salt and keep on rolling. ^^ Having fun is all that matters in a fandom, no matter what that fun is or how you go about having it.

Just remember that many purists can be rather harsh in their opinions, but as long as they aren't directly flaming you, there's nothing to worry about.

To your second point:

Well, same thing really. XD Mature individuals will simply hit the Back button or not click it at all if the item contains material they don't like. Anyone who looks and flames is a troll. So apply the above.

I got into NiGHTS when I was 14, and the fandom I think was the most fun part of NiGHTS, and now that it's been revitalized a bit with JoD, I still believe that. ^^ I remember the first community I got involved with was the Video Game Fanfiction Arcana (later Archives), which had fanfiction and art from MANY video game fandoms but ended up being a gathering place for NiGHTS fans. We had everything back then: OCs, mary sues, gary stus, alternate universes, reimaginings, you name it. And they were all enjoyed. So much in NiD was left so vague that, honestly, you could easily get away with playing around with the Night Dimension and the NiGHTS characters to your heart's content and not really break canon (unless you went AU, which was often the case). XD So with that in mind, everyone on the Archives was able to get together and have fun without hurting each other (at least in my experience) until the site went down in 2001. Now that we have JoD, the creative possibilities have just expanded greatly, and JoD is just as vague about a lot of things as its predecessor, so that means there's more fun to be had with OCs and whatnot. X3

So, you've got OCs? Bring 'em out and let 'em grow! Got a mary sue? Fine, just don't go TOO over the top with the tale. XD Mary Sues are determined by the way the story and the character is written. Believe me, there's a VERY FINE line between a neat character and a Mary Sue. I used to skirt that line all the time when I was young. X3 Good times, those were.

So, in closing, don't feed the trolls and celebrate your love of NiGHTS any way you want to. You'll have plenty of support here, I'm sure. And if you or your friends get hit again anywhere, just ignore it, delete the comment if you can, and keep on partying.

May NiGHTS unite us all! XD

Its sort of like going to 4chan and expecting to get cookies.

Epic LOL XD Well said, TRiPPY, well said. XD

I've never played NiD *cough* on its original console *cough*, but that didn't stop me from becoming a fan of the concept even before JoD was announced. I don't mind if people get their start with NiGHTS through JoD- they're still fans of NiGHTS and all of the unique concepts that it consists of (vivid dreamscapes, "sinister" nightmares, etc.). To blatantly disrespect somebody just because of this (they most likely couldn't experience NiD due to circumstances beyond their control) is utterly disgraceful and disagreeable. This doesn't mean that the people that don't like NiGHTS aren't entitled to their own opinions, but just that opinions aren't meant to be forced on others.

(...Wait a minute... I'm such a liar. I have played NiD on the Saturn, but I was... 3-4(?) so I can't remember. However, I did get back into the fanbase after rediscovering it because I had remembered a blue-haired boy walking through a snowy place, walking into an igloo, and then getting zapped with a light. Color me crazy. :X)

wow, i didn't think that everyone would be so open about this. I only recently got into the NiGHTS fandom (I only bought the game like a month ago) when my friend yelled 'LOOKIT NEW SEGA GAME FOR WII' at me. I enjoyed it, and had know idea that it was a 'sequel' until i looked it up on the interwebs and found this site (lucky me ^^). On DA there was so much tension between the newer and older fans. I read the journal of a well know NiGHTS artist on DA who full on beat down on anyone who played the new game and if anyone made fancharacters and paired them up with any of the original characters.

I now have an entire book dedicated to NiGHTS art (volume 16 of the book of crap /product placement) and and thanks to this, i do feel a little more confident in uploading my JoD based comic. Being a girl who grew up with sony (my PS1 still works -_-) I didnt have the privelage to play NiD as a child, but i will not stop reaserching and learning about it, regardless of what those purists say! *cue patriotic music and flag waving*

Purists, elitists, "true fans". I think pretty much every single fandom has them, and it makes me happy to see that this one can be so open and tolerant about the issue.

I have a bit of a confession to make. I became a fan in 2004, but didn't get a Saturn or Christmas NiGHTS until last autumn. Before that I played a few VS-rounds with Animejosse. Now I've played both Christmas NiGHTS and JoD - for about an hour each. That's right, I've barely played the games at all even though I've had the chance to. Yet I'm still at this forum, every single day out of my own choice. Does this make me less of a fan? Not really. Being a fan = liking the story/characters/product. Not devoting your life to collecting every bit of merchandise or knowing every bit of trivia there is, even if that is valid things for a fan to do. But I digress.

In the end it all boils down to the same thing. You like something, you're a fan. It doesn't matter if you're a newbie who's just gotten into it and is busy creating fancharacters out the wazoo, or if you're a veteran who's been there from the start and know every single little detail by heart. We are all fans.

Incidentaly, any youngsters being threatened directly with death/stabbing/acid in face for being a NiGHTS fan should direct their PM's to me. Lol.

So, in closing, don't feed the trolls and celebrate your love of NiGHTS any way you want to. You'll have plenty of support here, I'm sure. And if you or your friends get hit again anywhere, just ignore it, delete the comment if you can, and keep on partying.

Wow, it sounded like the fandom was so much fun back then...I really wanna get in on that fun!! TuT

I'm lucky this has never happened to me or my friends, I just hoped that by speaking out here, I would reach some of those who were doing the damage and let them know that they're hurting the fandom... It's a stupid aspiration, I know, especially on the internet, but I'm glad to see I had a lot of support anyway in my moment of madness. <3

It's also nice to see that there are a lot of others around here in my boat, ones who are comfortable in admitting they've never played NiD or haven't been fans as long as they'd wished they were, and to see that others recognize the problem aside from me. So I'm not crazy? XD jk

Thanks to everyone who replied and especially to those who offered their wise advice. :)

I became a NiGHTS fan when I was about 11 and in middle school through the commercials for the game and by visiting multiple websites for the game. As I said in a previous post, I had never played any of the games until recently, only saw NiGHTS through game cameos, the Archie comics, websites, and by staring at the game that lacked a system. However, I became interested within the very characters of NiGHTS themselves in the same way I had become a Sonic the Hedgehog fan or a Rock Lee fan.

So rather than go down the very violent route of the pirates and the ninja, please remember that everyone is entitled to their opinion. Don't set the newbies' hair on fire just because they prefer JoD or because they have fandom pairings. Remeber there were those who wanted to ignite us for liking NiGHTS when he was first introduced, so we shouldn't do that to them.

It took three years between me finding out about NiD and finally playing the game, and like most I got really interested in NiGHTS, the other characters, the dream world, the music, and so on. During those three years I found a NiD-site that looked very nice but had a very elitist/purist feeling to it. The two things that I remember most clearly was how the webmaster obviously disliking marens with hair or NiGHTS as anything else but 100% male, and implied anyone not agreeing were less of a fan.

Which brings me to another point, the whole "if you like this fanon you're not a true fan" or "you don't know canon like I do"-things. The point of fanon is, IMO, to play with canon! Sure, some things might be annoying... but once you realise you don't like a fic/fanart/fanon/whatnot it's generally easy to avoid it. It doesn't latch to your face screaming "Look at meeee!" One of the things I like about this fandom is how the games, especially NiD, leaves so much open to interpret. Not that this mean you should totally ignore canon, but that doesn't happens too often in this fandom. There's room to play with in fanon, have fun~!

In short: If you like NiGHTS, you're a fan. End of story.

I myself am "JoD noob", but I have played NiD. Some of my friends used to hacve Saturns and that game, wo when I went to their houses, we would play NiD. But I wasn't a NiGHTS fan, I just liked the game. JoD is what made me a fan of NiGHTS.

the first time i ever saw NiGHTS was in Sonic Riders. i may not have played NiD, but i know a lot about the series

NiGHTS is NiGHTS.

you said a mouthful TRiPPY
