This IS a video game, BUT, it has A LOT to do with dreaming, and it DOES have some stuff concerning the mind.

Anyone who's ever gone on /v/ on 4chan should know what this game is.

Basically, you play as a girl, the titular characterWRONG, her name is Madotsuki, and she walks through her dreams and explores them. Some are just flat-out bizzare and odd, others are a bit deep in meaning (i.e.: Uboa's apperance; it's this thing right here UBOA ). I've never played it, because it's known to make one shat their pants, but I do have a big interest in it.

And for those of you who want to know what th ending is, it's very sad, but here it is.:

Madotsuki wakes up in the morning, and runs outside of her apartment, onto her balcony, and jumps. The credits show a blood stain on a black screen, with strange creatures around it. It's a very sad ending; it always makes me upset.

This is really odd. I was intersted but from the looks of the vids, this game is a nightmare in itself to play. That and it seems a bit creepier than maybe I want. The guy in the video repeated, "You don't want to touch girls! Don't touch girls ever! EVER!" What the hell? Why would this game make bad things happen by going near girls? O.O

...severed head power? Well dreams don't usually make sense and some do have morbid ones.

I don't exactly consider it a 'canon' ending, though, because you have to get all 21 events and do special things and etc, plus it's rarely gotten to without being told of its existence. Would've been nice if there was an alternate ending.

It is sorta creepy, yeah. Think of Silent Hill + NiGHTS, and throw in a little bit of macabre. That's what this game basically is. There was a game like it I'm reminded of out for retail, but I forgot what it's called.

Oh. They turn into monsters I think. I know the part with Uboa, there's this room with a little girl in it, and if you turn off the lights, she turns into Uboa. BUT, it happens on random, so you might turn off the lights and she might not change at all into Uboa.

I know there's a backstory to Yume Nikki as well. I don't know who made this, besides the few names in the credits (it was like 4 or 5 people together).

Guise, there's a bit of an installation process.:

I'm a lazy ass, therefore, I steal from Neoseeker.:

It takes a bit of effort to get the game working, and I'm not sure how to get it working on Macintosh/Linux/Solaris/etc, just Windows.
Download Link (or avoid Rapidshare and download from this Mediafire mirror)
You need WinRAR or 7zip to open the file. The download should have two folders and an exe. First, you need support "Support for East Asian Languages" installed into Windows. You need an OS disc (or the file off of it from somewhere..) to do this, and then find the option in Control Panel->Regional and Language Settings. Installing these doesn't affect your current language settings at all, just installs support for the characters.

Then you need to run the installer and game with a program called Microsoft AppLocale. It's a free utility you can get from Microsoft's website, or in that download. It allows you to run programs under another regional setting without changing it for your entire computer. Unless you run Windows in Japanese, you need to install this to play. It's pretty useful anyway, and takes up no space.

When AppLocale is installed, you need to rename the files so a non-Japanese OS can read them. You need to rename both of the folders inside and the game .exe. Doesn't matter what they're named. The installer of the modified RPG Maker 2003 runtime is in the folder with "2003RTP" somewhere in the name. Run that installer with AppLocale set to Japanese (日本語 - near the bottom of the list).

Then just run the renamed game exe with AppLocale (in Japanese) to play it. There's an option in AppLocale to make a shortcut, ticking that may make it easier. The shortcut will appear in the Microsoft AppLocale folder in the start menu.

People who watch the youtube video of Uboa are fine. However, when you play the game and actually experience Uboa, then all you can do is pray. The game is cursed so after seeing Uboa in the game, you'll start to hallucinate in real life, occasionally catching glimpses of vaguely human shadows in the corner of your eye. This will happen more and more, slowly you'll be able to notice the shadow forms the shape of Uboa himself. When you start to see it's grin, then it's over. You'll be a complete mental wreck, always afraid of the dark and unable to live without having every light in your house turned on. Eventually, you WILL kill yourself as the hauntings get worse. The only way we know of this is that someone managed to survive by making a deal with Uboa...

Since it's an exploration game, there's no need for a plot.

XD; yeah. Collect all the effects; there's a walkthrough somewhere.

There is a plot, but it's sorta only in the author's mind.

Just be prepared for a fitting ending to an odd game.

I think it was just made for computer download and never licensed by anyone. :|

The game wasn't licensed. A Japanese person made it using RPG maker. I'm not sure which version of RPG maker though. It's always been on PC. They just can't sell it. It's older than I thought. I think two years ago it was made, I'm not sure.

RPG Maker 2003, which many people saw as the sh!t version of RPG Maker, so seeing Kikkiyama (creator of Yume Nikki) do all this with an not-so-great version... wow.
