I notice that it seems a large number of members on this board seem to be anime fans. I want to know how people first got into it!

I technically first watched anime in the form of Speed Racer, Transformers, and Voltron but do not think those really count since I was totally unaware of the shows Japanese origins. Then, when I was in middle school, Dragon Ball Z began to air on TV (I watched it mostly because it was on right after Samurai Pizza Cats, another anime that I liked more), Sailor Moon was also starting. Dragon Ball Z was pretty popular but I thought it was somewhat boring despite the interesting looking art. Then I met a new friend who had moved to my hometown from a city and had access to fansubs of DBZ episodes not yet aired and could answer pretty much any question about the series; he was awesome and I started to take a shine to the show. He showed my friends and I Akira which I was not a huge fan of but knew it had much coolness. Then in a gaming magazine one day I saw an ad for a "Panzer Dragoon animated movie" (anime OVA) and excitedly begged my mom to buy it for me. Before the Panzer Dragoon anime itself (which was of pretty poor quality) were a large number of previews for other ADV titles. I excitedly got Tekken, The Legend of Crystania, and DevilMan; meanwhile buying some Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z tapes.
One day an anime-themed store opened in the mall by me and exposed me to the world of fansubs, wallscrolls, pocky, figures, and all that good stuff. The store closed but I was addicted in a big way. I think the first anime DVD I bought was Ghost in the Shell. I believe I now have over 100 discs. I only have a few manga books but the only series I was able to get into was Akira so I own much less of that.

So what about everyone else? How and when did you first discover anime? What series got you hooked?

I first got into anime when my age was in the single digits...I think...maybe. I accidentally caught an episode of Dragonball Z during Sunday on YTV (I don't know why we got Canadian channels). My immature little mind loved it. Shortly after I started watching Sailor Moon on WCN some channel like that. I thought what little anime I saw was pretty cool and when Toonami started showing anime, my enthusiasm grew. My interest didn't really launch though until after I saw Gundam Wing. The rest, they say, is history.

Lately though I've had a bit of a falling out with anime. So much is released and aired nowadays, and a lot of it just doesn't seem that good anymore. Maybe I was just spoiled by all the good anime Toonami and Adult Swim aired between '98 and '03. I still love it, but it has to be really exceptional in my eyes otherwise I won't invest the time or money.

Lets be honest now. I think it's a fair bet that a very large portion of current anime fans were first introduced by either Sailor Moon or Dragonball Z.

Dominion Tank Police was my first anime (that I was aware of)
Late night channel flicking led me to it many years ago....

Since us guys in the UK didn't have Toonami until like 2001 my first dip into anime was when i was about 12 or something and found a colorful picture for Pop n' Twinbee Rainbow Bell adventures printed in a game magazine. I loved the style instantly and carbon copied the picture to put on my wall. Before that I'd been a massive Mario fan.... but stupidly I'd not realised it was Japanese.. Then came along Samurai Pizza Cats (which i adored).

None of it really struck me as being Japanese until one night in 1994 or something i was watching channel 4 late at night and the Japanese subbed Akira movie came on, it bored the crap out of me at the time (it seemed so long for a cartoon!) but it was then i knew what anime actually was.

I drew Sonic a lot from that point onwards... so i guess it went with anime. The first anime video i bought was either Dirty Pair or Dominion Tank Police, back when the only stuff you could buy in the UK was 'Manga' liscenced. Then I'd get the magazines, try to collect the toys and stuff. I just fell in love with the big eyes and colors (especialy the hair XD )

I didn't see a single episode of sailor moon until i was living in america in 2001/2 and it wasn't all that great in my opinon. They all had legs up to their armpits and long dragged out power ups... just like DBZ which i didn't like either.

I think the series that done it for me was Tenchi, it had a decent storyline and likeable fun characters. Washu and Mihoshi are great ^^

After that it was all sort of online anime i watched or ppl gave me to borrow.

I'm up to ep 42 of Bleach online, which is nice, not as enjoyable as naruto but still has nice characters (EYEBROWS YEY lol)

My two personal favourite series are Honey and Clover (still not dubbed yet) and Fruits basket.

Moviewise, Spirited away ATE MY SOUL. God i could watch that on repeat for 10 years and never get bored. I'd love to create something as epic as that.

For me, it was definitely Tenchi. XD

Ki showed me a video tape, couldn't say how she discovered it, way back in the later half of the 90's. Like TRiPPY, I had watched Mario and Samurai Pizza Cats, but had never even heard of the word 'anime' at that point.

Although, we did get onto to Tenchi before Toonami existed, too. (Which I'm so freaking happy about. The censoring shamed it. SHAMED IT.)

Alas, I was always kinda too broke to buy any of the other tapes Forbidden Planet offered. After CNX and Toonami hit, I watched Dragonball Z...Not until after the Frieza saga, though- which means the first few episodes I seen were some of the funny stuff between the series'.

Also, I was intregued and constantly pestered Ki (after she offered) to tape Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop at like 2 in the morning. I would have just done it myself, but I was a TOTAL sleep-demon back then. xD (yes, back then AKA before MMO.)
Then it was Fox Kids, saw some eps of Sailor Moon, it was a little funny, but not something I watched all the time. (Yeah, pretty much everything I watch, I tend to judge on how much it makes me laugh, nowadays. I'm just off a kind of makeshift Harvey Birdman marathon, fantastic stuff.)

Then it was on to Medabots, which although childish in looks, and even in terms of anime, it still looked different, it was brilliant with gags.
Most recently, it was the cut short series of Bobobo-bo bo-bobo, linked in a different thread. It is THE single most massive source of planet exploding random comedic hilarity ever to be invented...yes, even more random than Excel Saga.

So basically, Ki pretty much got me into the entire thing. Without Ki, there wouldn't be anime or manga (in my knowledge)....it'd just be 'hilarious cartoons'. XD

I daresay by the time I reached uni, someone else would have filled me in eventually.

Some time in the early 90s my dad had rented the 2nd Project A-ko movie. Before then I'd come across anime on TV but never acknowleged it as such until I realized later on, "Oh that show was Japanese." Then I saw Tank Police he'd recorded and knew I had to see more of this stuff. Soon afterwards came "Saturday Anime" on the Sci-fi channel, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, Pizza Cats, Teknoman, years later Pokemon, and then I got overloaded.

Lol, gotta be Dragon Ball Z. XD
My school friend kept talking about it and then one morning at my cousins house we had Cartoon Network running on the TV and the omnibus for DBZ came on showing Tien (Tenshinhan) fighting Nappa. Old school fighting, lol! XD For some reason we were all instantly hooked on this cartoon, claimed certain characters as our favourites of the bunch (Piccolo being mine, naturally) and then i picked up a Manga Max magazine after it was featuring DBZ related stuffs. From then on it was Tenchi Muyo and Pokemon for a while.

er....but before all the DBZ stuff i think it's fair to say i knew about 'japanese animation/comics' etc after the UK Sega Saturn Magazine had showcased what 'hentai' was in it's "And Finally..." pages. Lol, they refered to them as 'Girlfriend Games' however and didn't delve too much into detail about what it was. They printed a few pictures and then they had a stack of teenage boys writing in asking how they can get their hands on these games! XD
That was around 1998 or so, i think.

I suppose earlier than that still manga and anime was present in some of my favourite games, such as Street Fighter, though i don't think i acknowledge it at the time. As a kid, a cartoon was a cartoon to me. Once i grew up a bit i noticed there was a lot of differences between eastern and western styles.

On topic, Josse did it. XDXD She wouldn't stop talking about Sailor Moon, I started watching... and the rest is history. I was...14, I think. Anime has just recently started to get popular in Sweden, but back then all there was to see was Sailor Moon and Pokemon.

For years, I'd been catching a few minutes of a couple different ones. When I was 13 though, I was introduced by my cousin to what I consider the best anime and manga ever. We were hanging out in a hotel room and toonami was on. He then looked at the clock and said it was time for a really good anime to come on. Sure enough, the anime was Rurouni Kenshin: The Wandering Samurai. I loved the opening theme song. I couldn't peel my eyes away from the screen at all that half hour. By the time it was over, I felt I had reached enlightenment.

For the next two years though, I never had the opportunity to see it again. One day though during my freshman year, I met who has become my best friend to date. He was really into games so he and I started our friendship pretty well. One day though, he brought up the subject of anime and manga. He has a huge collection of it. I asked him about Rurouni Kenshin. He said he had the first volume. The next day he brought it to school and let me borrow it. That afternoon when I got home, I went to the back room to do my home work. I couldn't help but take a peek at the first page. It looked awesome. I started to try to do my algebra homework. But I kept going back to read more of the awesome manga. My homework didn't get done for quite a while that evening.

Soon, my manga and anime interests expanded. He started lending me more series. Series such as Full Metal Alchemist, Bleach, Death Note, Hayate the Combat Butler, D. Gray-Man, Buso Renkin, Black Cat and more have become some of my favorites besides Rurouni Kenshin. One day though early in my sophomore year, my friend bought volume 2 of Rurouni Kenshin. I took it home and read it that day and loved it.

Not too long after, I bought both volumes off of my friend. And not long after that, I started giving him money to go to the book store and buy more volumes. By the time it was the end of the school year, I had finished buying and reading the entire series, which is 28 volumes. The ending was wonderful. I've also started watching the anime online. I'm up to episode 37. Unfortunately, the anime was cancelled. It only got up to episode 95. Most of the episodes were filler episodes anyway. I've also been watching the Full Metal Alchemist anime. I'm not sure which episode I'm on.

So yeah, that's pretty much how I came to like anime and manga.

I don't even remember how I got into it. It was so long ago. Back in the good'ol'daiz when 4Kids didn't ruin everything.

I am really into a manga known as Godchild, you may also know it as Count Cain or Earl Cain. Smexy. It's actually the only manga I still follow. I used to follow Yu-Gi-Oh!, Claymore, Dr. Slump, Aishiteruze Baby, and a number of others but I dropped them after finding Godchild.

As for anime? Yu-Gi-Oh. Yes, Yu-Gi-Oh, and more specifically, the Doma arc (with Dartz, and the Oricalchos, and the stealing of the souls, and that one scene where Yami starts crying his eyes out, and that other scene where he beats the living bejeezus out of Weevil) and the Egyptian arc (with the Pharaoh-ness, and the memory loss, and that one tender scene near the end *sniff*). Yes. *squee*

The very first anime I remember seeing was Ginga: Nagareboshi Gin aka Silver Fang, dubbed into Swedish. I was five at the time and hiding behind the sofa - despite the censoring it could still be very frightening. The first series I actively followed was Hello! Sandybell when I was nine or ten, but I still didn't know it was anime. (Those two together with Candy Candy are very popular with people my age here in Sweden simply because we grew up with them.)

Then two years later tv4, a Swedish channel, began to air Sailor Moon. Sis got me to watch the second episode, and I was glued to the screen. It was cancelled around the same time we first got Internet, soo somehow I found a site dedicated to it and was introduced to the world of anime. Like Ica said, the only anime you could see on TV was SM and Pokémon.

And yes, I babbled her into SM XD I was happy having someone who didn't see me as completely weird for watching a cartoon...

It HAS? OOOH. Not that i'll like the English voices after getting so into the Japanese ones.. but at least lots more people will be able to watch it. Great great anime that helped me a lot in the head. As for the movie, i've seen half of it on youtube but nobody has subbed it yet :( I was watching it completely in Japanese and just grinning at the refs made to the cartoon. It's a shame they couldn't stick a blonde wig on Hagu but she's still a sweet acrtor choice. Mayama is HIM XD;;;
Do you have any links to a subbed version of the live action one??

I started out with some now classics: Speed Racer and Voltron, as butchered as the American dubs were. XD; Way back when, I once saw a broadcast of the first Vampire Hunter D movie on TV with my dad. That helped a little bit.

Then I graduated (perhaps not to some people) to Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon. Later on, I bumped up to Android Kikaider, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Lupin III. Each series I've come across (and there have been some I haven't mentioned because I can't remember them), holds its own charm despite their various draw backs and faults.

As for manga, I can't remember exactly which one it was that got me hooked. Probably Tarot Cafe, one other supernatural manga that I haven't seen in years, or MARS. Lately, I've been watching like a hawk for a DMC vol.3 novel to be released one day. Short as they are, they are wonderful for building extra layers onto Dante's character outside of what's seen in the games
Spoiler
. For the musically inclined, I recommend trying the manga Dragon Voice; it's been quite a little treasure to me since I started reading it. XD In fact, I think I'll break it out and start reading it again.

LD mentioned Kikaider ooohhhhohoho. ;o; Kikaider was what really started off my rebirth of Megaman love. Megaman 3 was my first video game, as a wee thing, and I remember always being a tad confused as to why Protoman was in the SKY at the end...

My first anime? Hmm... The first that I remember is Gundam Wing. I used to piss off my brothers by watching their cassettes to listen the opening theme a lot. |D
Anyway, The most notable anime for me was Dragon Ball Z, as that's what prompted me to start drawing. COULD YOU TELL? Most people can't, any more. XD

The movie Little Nemo. And i only realized 2 months ago it was an anime! It was one of my FAVOURITE movies when i was in elementary school. My grandparents originally bought it for me cuz it had a flying bed like in Bedknobs and Broomsticks. But i liked the movie for what it was. The very first anime that I remember watching was Ronin Warriors (the dub name for Yorriden Samurai Troopers) and Sailor Moon. After that, I started watching Samurai Pizza Cats, which in my opinion has the best dub ever. I was disappointed when I learned that Ronin and SPC weren't completed.

Oh, wait... I had completely forgotten that my first official anime would have to be The Little Bits (but I didn't find out that it was an anime until the 2006 Anime Boston convention).

For me, it was when Sailor Moon first came to North America in 1995. I saw the first episode and pretty much every episodes of the first season they dubbed at the time. I still love that show. Also, the Sailor Moon manga was the first manga I read and I have been into manga ever since. My first anime movie I believe was Sailor Moon SuperS but outside of Sailor Moon, my first was The Venus Wars when it was broadcast on Space (a Canadian channel specializing in sci-fi and supernatural shows and movies) and I still love that movie.

Where I live there practically the only anime on tv was Dragon Ball(all of them) and Zoids. Nobody really liked them either. I started reading manga a looong time ago before anyone else around here did. After a few years I stopped 'cause I realized that most manga (and anime, anime is ten times worse) is really crappy. Then all of a sudden manga and anime become extremely popular but I'm over it and they all look like Narutards to me. And they are. It's practically the only anime they'll watch(and Bleach too, but it's just as bad) and they go on and on about it. Urgh, even when I was really into manga and anime I didn't like Naruto, it sucks so much that it can only be enjoyed by idiotic people who are hypnotized by an orange jumpsuit. Why do I have to live in Mississippi? WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate Mississippi, don't believe the people that say Mississippians aren't as dumb as they're made out to be 'cause they are.

Edit- I still like some manga and anime, notably Trigun and Cowboy Bebop. But every now and then I'll sit back and think, "That's just really... not good". I like Studio Ghibli films, though. They're (almost) all amazing. But for a good animated show, you need not turn to anime, turn to Canada! They make Pucca!

I blame my bff Sam for corrupting my mind at the wee age of 11. I had just gotten into junior high (my birthday is late in September, hence I was still 11 on the first day of school) and met her in one of my classes. We became fast friends and eventually bff's. She's a year and a half older than me but was held back so we were in the same grade. Anyway, she invited me over and corrupted me with Beyblade yaoi porn until I joined the dark side. Now I'm a geek. But, it's a good life and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Thanks, Sam! And your insane way of easing a child into anime. I'll never forget it.

Well, when I was about 3, they started playing the dubbed pokemon, and I fell in LOVE with it. I mean, I was totally obsessed. I guess it just stuck to me (Until I started drawing manga, when I was 7, Then pokemon kinda faded away) I started to watch more anime, and started buying manga when I was 9 or 10.

No idea. It could have been Sailormoon, Dragonball, Pokemon, Medabots, or even Digimon (since I never really woke up early enough to watch Pokemon). All I know is that anime today doesn't give me that feeling that I used to have with the old stuff.

Then friends and family, after Pokemon got bad, were all "ANIME IS GAY BOO JAPAN", so I kinda grew to dislike/have a closet liking for it, then it was about 2 years ago that I eventually went and said "f*** it; Anime is cool.", and enjoyed anime again.

As for WHAT got me back into it, really friends.

Pokemon. It was great at first, really, but eventually just became...too cliche, I guess. My siblings and I finally dropped the Pokemon anime when the voice actors were switched. It hurt our ears. Now I mostly just read manga and watch anime every once in a while with my friends. The manga Pokemon Adventures/Pocket Monsters Special is way better than the anime, but it's not printed in English in the U.S. anymore. The only English copies past the Yellow saga are produced in Singapore (I think I got that right).
