Ok. I know that NiGHTS is a rail game and I love it that way. Both of the games. But I have got to thinking...
What if SEGA made the next one fully 3D flight. I mean real flight. I got to thinking and it doesn't seem all that bad if they pulled it off right. I mean look at the opening video for NiGHTS into Dreams. Wouldn't it be great to fly like that in the game? I think it would but SEGA would have to get the feel right. But as I remember there were two reasons that NiGHTS was born in the first place.

ONE: To show off Saturn's power
TWO: To give gamers the full sensation of free flight

So in my mind it would not be against SEGA's original plans.

Please do talk on the subject, but I ask that you do not bash this idea. If you disagree then disagree in a civil tone.

If I'm quite honest, I've thought exactly the same thing more than just a few times.

Both NiD and JoD were orrigenally planned like this, but both times they decided (I assume this was the testers) that the 2d model was more fun.

The only game I've ever played that got 3d flight correct was Zone of the Enders, and control like that would be way to jerky for NiGHTS, not to metion the camer angle problms. But maybe it could be smoothed out enough for NiGHTS.

I'd like it in addition to, not replacing the current style though.

I agree with Phosphorus's point of "I'd like it in addition to, not replacing the current style though". Perhaps on a future game some of the challenges could be 2D flight and some could be 3D flight...? That'd keep everyone happy, I should think.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the NiGHTS game in SEGA Superstars free flying? Wasn't much fun...

I believe it was on rails, Star Fox style

Perhaps the classic style could be used for the levels, and a Z.O.E. style used for some of the boss battles? It's be a cool way to fight Reala, for sure.

If so, I'd like to see it Spyro style. Despite being on the PS1, they made his flight system quite well. Though for stopping in mid-air, I'll say Spyro's swimming style would be good.
This is all based on Spyro Year of the Dragon.
For the links, we could do it like in Spyro 2, Manta-ray riding.
Paralooping, maybe a button could imitate it? Like in the flying levels of the original Spyro.

If you're thinking what I think you're thinking... Oh my God, I'm not even a coder and my head hurts thinking about it! XD I'm sorry, but even with a floor*, that is going to be a pain in the a** to code, let alone play.
Going up, down, left, right, TURNING AROUND ON A DIME (sorta), PARALOOPING... That's probably going to be a monster to code and play without ripping every one of your now-graying hairs out. Unless you use two control sticks. XD ... I am such an a**. XD There I go, shooting down my own idiotic rant. XD But even then, it'd be a monster to code and play, regardless.

Of course, if I'm wrong (Which I probably am), then ignore me.

*The reason I bring up the floor is because a lack of it as a reference point is what's keeping people from making a 'TRUE' 3-D Space Spaceship game.

Im sure everyone thought of the idea of full 3D flight especially for Wii, I thought new flight would be using the nunchuck for both the analog control and the tilting action.

Yeah I know about the problems that would come up and I do think that the option of rail along with it is not a bad idea.

I think the easiest thing to incorporate while still letting NiGHTS behave like NiGHTS is to use a depth shift, like Guardian Heroes

In full 3D Paraloops would indeed be rather tricky

I think that if Sega considerd making a full flying NiGHTS they wouldn't want him relying on a non-directional button to fly forwards.

There are some games out there where you can fly fully 3D, even loop and such, these games are usually plane or flight sim games especially around the Fifth Generation of gaming. These games don't usually use direction buttons to move forward but a sort acceleration and reverse button with the direction buttons to adjust the vehical around the air.

Though these flight sims were more free flight than NiGHTS they wern't a ssmooth or free etc.

Besides if NiGHTS would be able to fly around Nightopia would that be such a good idea for the actual game like flying along the specific mares?

Z.O.E. NiGHTS = Good idea. However, I think the basis of the game and how you beat a level would change dramatically. Probably no more racing, and a lot more busting things and beating stuff up. That'd be odd if the next NiGHTS game, NiGHTS is reincarnated into a robot shell to defeat Wizeman's out-of-dream incarnate.

DUN DUN DUNCE! That would never happen. XD
