Your nightopians and mepians will breed with each other in your garden. This is normal and they also do it in the regular dream levels. Sometimes a mepian will breed with a nightopian and give you a different trait in the offspring.

That's something they done in the original too.

You get a mepian when you're playing in the levels and you throw a nightmaren and it ends up hitting a nightopian. That nightopian will lay an egg and a Mepian will be inside. Its a cross between the nightmaren you tossed and a nightopian, with random traits. It will have maybe claws, the head of the nightmaren, or simply a different coloured vest. They're just like nightopians, only the sometimes do interesting things the others won't do, like shield themselves in force fields or carry around torches and start fires. (One of mine sets bonfires and dances around them)That is weirdly cool!! But i have no idea what a mepian is (i have LOADS of Nightopians tho)...
Really they're just fun to have, if you really start getting into nightopian breeding and such.
And what TRiPPY said is true: They also did this in the original game. But in the original game, there was no specific garden to keep them in. They bred and died entirely in game while you played through and your actions had an impact on them. Paralooping them killed them and often made all the rest of them afraid of you.

Twas a joke, a joke. XD
But seriously, they're harder to get to breed together with specific mepians or nightopians than it is to just grab a nightmaren and ram it into a nightopian. My pians and mepians breed randomly. My shleepian, Tacou (yeah his name's taco.) decided to knock up a second critter and had a shleepian with flippers?
I tried setting a couple of them beside each other, but they just stare at you. Guess they breed when they feel like it.

I tried that too, with mixed results- I'm especially trying to breed one of my mepians with what appear to be eagle/angel wings. The body and arms are shleepian, normal head, and funky wings. When I set it with a deworm mepian, they bred by the time I was done feeding my 15 some others. When I set the angel mepian with another shleepian, they stared at me and played with a soccer ball.
Maybe they're picky about who they mate with.

They're not too picky to me. I place two random Pians who I know full well haven't had any other contact before and POP out comes an egg.
