I recently found out that Dethklok is doing a free promotional tour on campuses accross the US. I checked out the list and was ecstatic to find that they're swinging pretty close to my little neck of the woods.

Here is the tour listing.

I know I'm going. My question is are any of you?

Well... about three hours ago I just left the garage after going to the concert. I must say I think my ears are bleeding. I had a hell of a time and I feel like sharing the whole story.

For starters, I got to the hall about 20 minutes before the doors open. This part sucked. For some reason I didn't know you were actually supposed to order the tickets online even though they didn't cost anything. Basically I waited for an hour and a half along with many others while we waited and watched as a small group of people who did order their tickets got to go right in past metal detectors. Everybody else was forced to wait because of crowd control. Supposedly the show was already fully booked. So we waited like this, not knowing if any of us were going to get in. Even though I was at the front, I was a little worried. Then came 7:00, showtime.

Now, Dethklok was originally supposed to open for And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, but those guys actually went on first for about a half hour. My guess is this was done to stall for time while staff figured out what to do with everybody else. Apparently only about 150 of the people who ordered tickets actually showed, so I think just about everybody got in. I was one of the first hundred. So there I was in what was essentially a dance hall with about 800 people inside. There were shops in the back and a Guitar Hero III demo kiosk in one corner. The band with the ridiculous name wrapped up at about 7:30. Good thing too. Not to many people seemed interested in them. It was obvious who these people came to see. They roadies started setting up Dethklok's equipment while some endorsement ads ran. After a while some prizes were given to random people. One prize was a copy of the newest Guitar Hero. After winning, the guy was called on stage to play a song. He picked Freedom in Cambodia on Hard. He missed the first two notes (chords you could see coming a mile away) and the audience was appropriately harsh. The guy improved though and ended with 97%. Still, the crowd was getting antsy. Then as if is response, the lights dimmed and it began.

A cartoon in the style of the show was projected on a screen to give a backdrop of the tour, after which the talent appeared on stage (Kloketeer included) and played an extended version of the Deththeme followed by Briefcase Full
of Guts. These guys played their hearts out. They played so hard and so loud that sometimes the speakers were overloaded. The concert was presented in a similar fashion to what The Gorillaz did. The talent performed in the foreground while animated music videos (not shown on TV) featuring the show characters was projected in the back. In between some songs the band took a break and showed more comical animated shorts in the same vein as the show. These were nice because they were hilarious, they gave our ears a chance to recover, and they gave Brendon Small a chance to rest his voice after doing Nathan's death gurgle.

As for the songs, the band played virtually the whole album and the audience really got into it. There was a lot of energy in that room. People were banging their heads and throwing up the horns all around. Perhaps the best moments were when Dethklok played Murmaider and the Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle. Absolutely everybody knew the lyrics to these songs and joined in singing including me. There is something really surreal about hearing 800 people rhythmically chanting "Murder, Mermaid Murder" in unison. After Dethklok played the last song of the night, they teased an encore with another cartoon and started playing Go Into the Water. People went nuts. Going off the jazzed up audience, Brendon asked if we wanted one more. The audience basically said **** yes and Dethklok finished the night perfectly by playing Fansong. Afterwards they left the stage with the audience chanted Dethklok's name in satisfaction of an awesome show. I left the hall with sweat soaked clothes, swollen eardrums, a tour poster in one hand, and my knife-slice grin going ear to ear. It was a hell of a thing.

Sorry if this was long-winded, but this is the first real concert I've ever been to. I had a great time and just wanted to share the story with Dethklok fans who may not get a chance to see the show. Honestly, unless you downright hate Metal, you guys should go if you're in one of the cities they tour.
