After reading some of the replies in the Bebop or Champloo topic, I felt that one specific topic needs to be put on a broader range. So... here goes nothing.
When you watch something, what factors contribute to whether or not you love it or hate it with a vengence? Whether it's music, the storyline, the characters, the artwork, the mood, or whatever, please state it and if it's possible give an example.
As for me, I believe that it is the basic story that normally ropes me in to a show or movie. When I first learned about Hikaru no Go, I looked it up and learned that a kid named Hikaru was possessed by a ghost who taught him to play go and in that journey he had found a rival in a stronger player his age and was trying to come to his level. Of course, this sparked my curiousity and the way that the charatcers were written helped anchor me as a HNG fan. The same is also true in a way with Naruto, Bebop, and other stuff.
How about you guys?

It's kind of hard to put my finger on it, but I think for me it's probably a combination of an involving story with great characters, a good musical score, and most importantly, a unique/stylish excecution.
I don't watch too many shows nowadays, but here is a good examlpe of what I mean. There was a point in time several months ago were I was just tired of anime. I felt like I'd seen everything worth seeing and all the new stuff coming out was just the same rehashed cliches and storylines. Then I decided to take a gamble and downloaded some One Piece fansubs. I fell in love with the show almost immediately. Everything about the show had style and charm. Characters were unique, the premise was cool, and the esoteric art style roped me in from the get go. Simply put, there was nothing out there like One Piece (that I know of) and the show was class to begin with so now goes toe to toe with Escaflowne for being my favorite anime ever.

I guess something original, or smartly written, or just well executed.. it helps when you have something with everything- good visuals, music, story, characters.. but good writing goes a long way.

I'll often watch something if it's funny, or something that generally interests me (which is a gives for anything you like xD!). My reasons are often varied, however. Sometimes, I like the looks/personality of a certain character. Other times, the Story ropes me in. Usually it's both. Mix in a bit of humor, and you got me drawing fanart and making Slash Fiction all day long. XD!

In general I'd say artwork ---> story --> characters --> music in that order, but there's got to be atleast something good in all of them for me to really stick around. Sometimes one good aspect is enough to have me hooked, and the rest will follow.
One good example is "Mononoke" (No, not the Gihbli movie. XD ) What interested me in the first place was the artstyle, and nothing else. Then the story and characters made me continue to watch it, and the music is just frosting on the cake really.
I agree with Zero-Shift about One Piece though. Those who have seen nothing but the dub and dislike it because of that... give it another chance. D:
