I'm all sad, and i have been for a while. Is Journey of Dreams going to be the last NiGHTS game? well it wasn't fantastic, it was okay, especially when compared to some of the other wii games of the time. But do you think there will ever be another sequel? or was JoD sega's way of saying they never want to make a NiGHTS game again?

Ever? I don't think JoD will be the final NiGHTS game. But, since it wasn't a financial success, Sega isn't motivated to make a sequel immediately. There were eleven years between NiD and JoD. Hopefully there won't be eleven years between JoD and whatever comes next - I personally imagine a new NiGHTS game will be made sometime in the next five years. (Based entirely on nothing more than optimistic speculation.)

But the fact that Sega has recognized the loyal fanbase (evidenced by NiGHTS being the flagman-babe in ASR, showing up as a Mag in Phantasy Star Portable 2, and the fact that apparently TRiPPY gets mountains of swag for being the 1337 fan-leader) I don't at all think Sega would "never want to make a NiGHTS game again."

I think we'll get more NiGHTS games in the future. Sonicteam really likes NiGHTS. Maybe not soon, but i can believe that they'll have another go at some point. People have just gotta keep showing they love NiGHTS and want to see more.

And we just gotta keep fighting so NiGHTS doesn't get screwed over by strange management decisions. But we're the NiGHTS fanbase and that's what we do best.

I'd like to see a portable game. DS would be great, especially since the graphics would be reminiscent of the Saturn (but better, of course).

I doubt JoD is the last game EVER, though. In eleven years, our kids'll be on this site, begging for NiGHTS 3, and WHATTYAKNOW?! NiGHTS 3. We'll sneak into their rooms at night, turn on their SuperWii64UltraCubes, and get lost in the dream all over again. Of course, by this point in the future, video games will be SERIOUS FREAKING BUSINESS, and we'll have to strap on our Power Glove II's and our Ultra Balance Boards and our WizeMart-Brand Motion-Sensing Jester Hat with Real Working Rocket Launcher Attachments.

And the people will rejoice.

I think that there will be more NiGHTS in the future. Given Sega's talks about utilizing IPs in a more effective, respectful way, and puttin NiGHTS in ASR, there's still some love. :P

I hope so guys. It's just that they kinda killed him, and I'm wondering how they'll un-kill him for a sequel. The only other death-revival I can think of that they've managed was shadow, and that's only because we didn't see him die.

... NiGHTS and Shadow...

Now i have to try and draw that.

You've been watching Nostalgia Critic, haven't you?

Back on subject, no, I doubt NiGHTS will be going anywhere. At the very least it's still a cash cow for whenever that one person who comes up with Sonic plots is on vacation. At the very most TRiPPY will eventually buy the rights and make a NiGHTS game but RIGHT. And somewhere in the middle we fans will have to make a full game ourselves without rights.

Clearly you don't read superhero comics, where pretty much every character who has ever died has come back to life. And every superhero has died at some point, some multiple times. Even deaths which are very important to the storylines can be undone -- a while back the possibility of Batman's father being alive popped up in Batman comics and I'm pretty sure Spider-Man's Uncle Ben has been brought back.

Also: it's not like JoD is a sequel to NiD in the storyline sense of the word. NiGHTS 3 could have its own unique continuity just as JoD did.
I admit that I haven't played JoD but from what I've gathered NiGHTS' death is not even such a definite thing and was potentially ambiguous? I mean, I can't imagine a scene in which Will & Helen are burying his corpse...

If Sega wants a new NiGHTS game set in JoD continuity, they would figure out a way to pull it off.

-Find the NiGHTOPIA Room?

I think NiGHTS games should be released once per generation. Journey Of Dreams was moderately disappointing compared to the original but still an overall SPOCIOUS game. I want the next NiGHTS game to have the option to select the design of choice (NiGHTS' costume, iNTO DREAMS nad CHRiSTMAS were the best. JOURNEY OF DREAMS wasn't as cool but still cool) or have them as unlockables. I want NO voice acting, but NiGHTS is better without a voice and Journey Of Dreams' had the potential to kill the mystery. Fortunately, I am forgiving.

NiGHTS FOR 2012!!!!!!-

I don't think we'll never see another NiGHTS game. The truth was this Wii game was a gift from SEGA to not only loyal NiGHTS fans, but to expose him to a new generation as well. While the game had its flaws I was glad they made it. I always felt that the first NiGHTS game was almost too ambitious for the technology of the SEGA Saturn. I actually enjoyed the voice for NiGHTS after I got over the initial shock. After all, NiGHTS has no gender and the fact that he/she has a British accent makes sense because it makes the dreamers language and accent. NiGHTS' voice depends on the dreamers he/she's connected to. So maybe if there's a third NiGHTS game he/she'll sound completely different!*lol* Just think! Austrailian NiGHTS!

Personally, I don't feel any more NiGHTS games should be made because there wouldn't be the same love, support, and devotion that NiD had. Plus, we wouldn't have Naka or Oshima behind the development at all and they're key people. I am personally happy having just one amazing NiGHTS game on my Sega Saturn. That's all I need.

While a full NiGHTS game might not be a top priority, I don't want NiGHTS to be ignored. He should have cameos in future games, and an animated short would be amazing. NiGHTS is just too unique and important to be forgotten.

I feel that there probably will be another game, but I don't think there NEEDS to be another game for NiGHTS to be remembered. NiGHTS is just too damn memorable in my eyes.

But taking another angle on it, making another game doesn't necessarily mean NiGHTS will be remembered. So another game is not needed. The original Saturn game was good enough for me (and then some).

While I understand this kind of perspective on games, I have to say that it's something that can really be a hindrance. People rearrange, re-envision, and reboot concepts, characters, songs, franchises, and so on very often, many times without the involvement of the original creators or "key people" responsible for what made them what they were previously. Look at the Three live-action Batman reboots, and the numerous animated versions that have existed. The same basic core concepts, though many contributing factors are wildly different, and still you can see how high quality the results can be in many cases. Even if the original creators of something can't capture the magic as they once did (OH, SONIC, WHY?!), that doesn't mean that another group, another generation, can't give it the dedication and creativity that would do it justice. Now, granted, I'm speaking from a perspective where I encounter people on OCReMix saying things like the following:

(posted in response to the Xenogears project releasing)
"You ruined FFVII and now this??.. how dare you even touch such a great soundtrack like that? it's one of the best soundtracks by Mitsuda.. you just ruined it with your lame originality.. why can't you make the recognizable remix?? don't try to be original by adding non-fitting chords or any bad sample choices.. please stop doing it!!!!!"
and the person goes on to say:
".. you can't just take a complete master piece and put you unpleasant originality to it.. you can add solos or other stuff that FITS!!! you got the whole remix stuff so much wrong.. you nor I have the rights to change the melody of the original.. I you want to put your originality, make your own song, with out riding on the franchise.."

I know I'm going really far with this point, MUsashi, and believe me I'm only talking about it because you brought it up, and I'm not arguing with you in the least. I'm just trying to illustrate that a perspective of purity or holding steadfast to the creative vision that can only be brought out by the original key people is something which can ultimately be what kills something that still has the ability to be wonderful. While my example might seem far and away different than the topic you're referring to, it really isn't by that much. Look at Bentley Jones, who was a remixer before he actually did songs for the industry. These people who hold the love and passion for ideas can end up honoring them so much that some end up with the opportunity to do it within the confines of officiality within that idea.

My goal here was to show that as long as someone identifies with a concept enough to try to contribute to it themselves, it is very much alive and has a possibility of continuing. If my rant was too much, then just blame it on the fact that it's Wednesday and I've been overworking my brain.

JoD is a very love-hate issue. What I take out of it is that people often like the design, but not the story. Theoretically, a future NiGHTS game could take out the fluff and apply traditonal NiGHTS gameplay to newlandscapes with modern graphics. A new game could be good, but only if handled properly.

I've said this countless times over.

The NiGHTS fanbase has two games and you've either come in from noticing NiD or JoD. We are unlike the Sonic fanbase where loads of different fans have come in from different era's of the hedgehogs career. There are Sonic fans who love the old school 2D stuff, there are those who love the Adventure series, there are those who love the StoryBook series, and so on. To make an idealistic Sonic game that appeals to every Sonic fan is now impossible. They just couldn't do it.

However, with NiGHTS things are different. Where as it would take a LOT to make a good Sonic game, it doesn't take that much to make NiGHTS a good game. One of the reasons JoD went sour is because of the way SEGA handled it. Rushing it and moving it from console to console and just basically shitting on the franchise, that's a key reason as to why NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams failed. And i do feel Iizuka is not able to craft a NiGHTS game on his own, i do feel Yuji Naka and Oshima need to be present for the game to really take form properly.
JoD changed the way we flew. It was no longer about chasing time but about chasing birds. NiD, your only real enemy was time stopping you from continuing. JoD, your enemy became physical. You had to chase a bird, you had to rush, the levels felt different because of it, you couldn't lap, the online time rankings were gimped, it was butchered.

I could go on all day about what makes NiGHTS a great game and how SEGA could make a great game again but that's not the point i'm trying to make.

What i am trying to say however is if they ever did decide to make another NiGHTS game, NiGHTS 3 or whatever, then it really wouldn't take a lot to make it good. It's just JoD done it too differently and that's why it failed.

If i were you i wouldn't be against having a NiGHTS 3. I would be against poor design choices and upperhead management.

One thing i've always said was Sumo Digital should do a NiGHTS game. Why? Because these guys care for detail. You've only got to look at the games they've done to see this. And since our community has had such an impact on that company i feel no other games company understands us more than Sumo Digital. Of course, Sonic Team would never let that happen :/

A bunch of fans in a project headed by TRiPPY and DiGi told Sega how much they loved the original NiGHTS. I don't know how much bearing that had on JOD, but it certainly seems like it. :(

Really? That's awesome.

But if Journey of Dreams wasn't a financial success I'd say the chances of a brand new NiGHTS are about the same as a new Shenmue. I don't think any amount of convincing from fans would result in Sega making that kind of investment again, especially since they seem to be scaling back these days.

I was really surprised when Journey of Dreams was announced. Like, I couldn't figure out why Sega was committing to a new, retail sequel to a game that was woefully overshadowed by its 1996 competition when it was released. I mean it's not like NiGHTS had the brand recognition that Sonic does.

Well whatever. I truly believe in a port of the original on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, just not another sequel.

We gotta keep doing what we do to keep SEGA noticing us and the way we're organized is good for that. It's good that we actually have people planning things like the current NiD15 campaign instead of us going around signing a thousand petitions that are ignored by everyone. Besides, with the relation this community has built with SEGA there is no way this is the last we'll be seeing of NiGHTS.

No more NiGHTS?

Personally, I really have mixed ideas about this. Sure, it took NiGHTS a long couple of years to get back on the scene and into a very pretty game, not the best to the original, but still; and then going back into the shadows for a short period of time until that big fight to get NiGHTS an appearance in Super Star racing, but no I don't believe this is the end of NiGHTS. My reason for this is because there is so much noise for NiGHTS everyone's making - especially from TRiPPY and DiGi (who on earth could not hear him?) for the NiD15 campaign and so on is un-ignorable . And plus, after that notice of 'Another NiGHTS' and everyone going mad and all that on a 50/50 chance too. To be honest, I do not think we've seen the last of our favourite purple jester. Not anytime soon, but in the next couple of years maybe we could see another game propping up after a long wait. Who knows? Maybe there will be, maybe there won't.
But I very highly doubt the noise about NiGHTS will ever die I can pretty confidently say that be me a raving NiGHTS fan or not, and quite frankly, I have and always will be one. But that's just what I think.

If you want to talk to be, don't be shy. I love making new friends.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure.

I think that we have a good 50/50. For starters, SEGA knows how many people out there love NiGHTS, but then again, they didn't really get good sales on the last game. They need to get their butts in gear and come up with a better NiGHTS game so people will be more compelled to buy it.

The odds for a new NiGHTS are, like Eivana said, about 50/50.

Most of the hardcore NiD fans are in this whole love-hate idea about JoD, some leaning more towards love, while others lean towards hate. The newer generations are the same. Those who played JoD and loved it, probably went back to see what the original was like, and in doing so, loved that as well. In fact, those who hated JoD might've tried out the original and loved it.

IMO, JoD was not a terrible game in itself, it just...just developed the whole idea of NiGHTS in a way that was far different from the original. NiD is considered by many fans to be the best NiGHTS game that SEGA's done(unfortunately, that doesn't say much, since NiGHTS has only had 2 games as it is :/), while JoD has been reduced to the "5$ or less" pile in your local GameStop. However, JoD had many good qualities, more than enough to rival the bad.

For a Wii game of it's time, the graphics were overall decent to above-decent, with a few minor graphical issues. Also, the gameplay...well, as the kids, I'd have to say it was kinda 'blech', while the flying gameplay was pretty successful(with a few minor problems that can be easily overlooked). The storyline, IMHO, was the one thing that really brought out something they should do for each NiGHTS game.

In the original NiD, the goal/moral/whatever you choose to call it, was overcoming your fears, and believing in yourself. In Jod, it delves further into more emotional type of issues, such as trusting others, fighting for what you believe in, etc.

However, although the storyline was good, it lacked many qualities that prevented this game from being the superior to NiD. There were many perks, cliche/ corny scenes, and of course Taylor's Dad Reala's Bat-tights Owl the many plotholes.

So, in short, the odds are equal, if not, more leaning to in favor of a new NiGHTS game...

...I forgot what I was talking about... :)
