It needs to be something with a potentially unnerving sound. Possible candidates include a keyboard guitar (maybe not...), a theremin (unless it makes him seem too much like an alien), or a sitar. the sitar is primarily because, in my own little world, Paint it, Black is Reala's theme music.

I'm loving this topic!
I'd have to agree with marymont, actually -- violin would be very interesting. And that Hades Violin is wild.
But there's one possibility that hasn't been thrown in yet, so I figure I'll try something completely different -- Drums. I've seen some pretty calm drummers, and some really wild ones. And I've seen some really good drummers with some really odd quirks before -- I think it would fit rather nicely.
And for anyone who thinks that his fingernails are suited to guitar -- you've probably never tried to play guitar with long nails... It's rather painful. I'd have to say that it's the only time I've ever been proud of my nail-biting habit.

My vote's for the electric guitar, the bass preferably. A flute is gentle and beautiful, but if played a certain way the electric guitar.. well, Rob Zombie anyone? XD Great stuff, but not for relaxing at all unless you like that kind of thing.
And I get too much of a kick out of imagining Reala shredding it on Through the Fire and Flames. XD Now that's bad ass!

KIZZ or KISS?
LOL! Can't remember if it was KISS or KIZZ. All I know is that they were a hard rocking band that had black and white make-up on their face with black lip stick. I haven't heard from them in a long time.

I agree with people who said harp or lyre.
My reasoning is that you want to make it similar to the NiGHTS flute playing scene to keep to the mood and mysticism.
I would want something acoustic that doesn't need to be plugged in, even though its a dream and doesn't need to be. Also something that he could easily hold and carry around and incorporated into an interesting acrobatic playing pose. something with recognizable hand motions (not just fingers like piano/guitar) that make the entire playing more smooth and sinister dance like.

Ideally it would be an eerie haunting sound. But there is something appealing about Reala *plucking* slowly notes out of thin air while peering at you and smirking. Also in some places puck, pan or a fairy creature are depicted holding a small lyre/harp. Giving the instrument an "otherworldly" feel.

I could see Reala with a ukulele! j/k Though I am liking these sitar ideas.
And Jackle would totally play the rubber band!

OH BOI!!!!
Methinks he would play an INVISIBLE ELECTRIC VIOLIN!!
Like dis XD
not.
Meh, he would play the Piccolo, since it can be so ANNOYING.
Or, like many others have said, an electric guitar....air guitar...
EDIT: Birdy, you made me smile with the Sitar part, REALA LIKES HIS SITAR, HE PLAYS IT WITH HIS TOES.

Organ. An evil church organ. Those things can get a tad gloomy on the right occasions, and he helped write the book on that. It fits him well.
