I'm sure you realise in things like this I'll be the last to know, though in some instances at SEGA I'm the first to know. Lol.
We have no NiGHTS 3 listed on our sheets, and we've got stuff listed down on there for the next 2-3 years so, not that anyone will beleive me I'm sure but atm at least from an SOE point of view no one has any details of such. Its always a case of wait and see. Will we see a NiGHTS game again? Yes, I'd say it was likely IMO. Will it be decidedly shorter than the 11 years gap previously? You bet your "nicely rendered ass" that if it happens it'll be before 2019.
So no, there won't be any instances of giving Reala a gun, there won't be any instances of 4Kids cartoon, there won't be any instances of an equivilent to Secret Rings.
You can expect Owl to get a spin off tho, at least one of the children to be killed off, a series of masks incluidng tapeworm, dung beetle and giant iguana, Shenume 6, SEGA Stickleback Fishing, SEGA Superstars Netball, Penthouse Of The Dead, Super Monkey Cube, Comix Zone 2 and we're blatently planning to do a fully 3D reworking of Tails & The Music Maker - AAA BABY~!
Now what I ACTUALLY came on here to comment on, lol, the NiGHTS website game has been in development for 4 months and finally got through the approvals process. We were asked whether we thought it worth putting live, but I said for you guys it should be as a little extra thank you. The JoD sites does seem to be our official NiGHTS site I suppose so it could get a reworking in the future should any other games be announced.
Speak soon,
AAUK

WOW I CAN SEE IT NOW- REALA IS GOING TO BE THE ANTiTAPEWORM and the only way you can kill him off is by eating a bag of sugar! You fly through stomach ulcers and collect kidney stones in order to... nevermind...
You know, i actualy COULD wait another 11 years for a new game, probably not quite as 'sitting on ass waiting' as the former 11 years, more sort of proactively becoming a millionaire and then giving SEGA a backhander to help project kinda waiting. I totaly would too, but only if there was a tapeworm.

Just some food for thought but Sega milked the popular Sonic series (still does) and Yuji Naka is no longer in Sega so whats to stop Sega from leaning on NiGHTS?

*sigh* The amount of what i knew of Sega during JoD's development pissed me off and i really hate the way they treated stuff. Iizuka being a real good example, saying one thing doing another, lying about stuff that we knew otherwise. He seems to be a very secretive man. Jesus christ, he was shocked to find out we knew about Selph for crying out loud. Like we uncovered pandora's box or some sh!t. But then again, as much as we love our games and find the heart in them all, the truth is this is always going to boil down to money and nothing else because Sega lost money and now they're trying to figure out every possible way of getting it back.
Question - did we all play games as a kid and see nothing but the bright side then once we grew up we began noticing all the crap that's behind games being developed? I remember games in the 90's being just about games. Maybe i was blind to the facts because i was a kid, i dunno. All i know is Sega have not felt like the same company that they used to be and it's not because they no longer make consoles, it's just the way they seem to act about things.
Remove the idiots who are only there because they couldn't get a job at Capcom or Konami and put some people who know where the heart is.

Yes, yes and holy sh!t yes. Do we know who is to blame for that kind of crap happening now? Money. With each new generation of console that comes out, the prices go up. Wii may be the cheapest to develop for, but only a few select people (Nintendo, Capcom, AXV <- Super Monkey Ball studio and Konami) are truly taking advantage of the system's power. Sega may have steared Sonic in a slightly good direction (FYI, Secret Rings) but there money grabbing ways are ruinning are favorite mascots, those being NiGHTS and Sonic. It's only money. Money, money, money.
I wonder, was Sega Europe impressed with Journey of Dreams? They only seem like the only Sega company (Japan is losing money and closed Sega korea, and America is run by the biggest retards in the gaming industry) who isn't insane.
Yes, I know my post has nothing to do with the topic, but damnit, that's what happens when you're a Nintendo gamer. You b!tch about things. =/

DiGi, I cannot tell you how many times I've heard this story... the corruption of money, not only in games but in real life too! it's truly sickening... I would make and sell games on E-BAY! for 3 cents a copy so long as it would bring me AT LEAST enough money to live a modest lifestyle*sigh* The amount of what i knew of Sega during JoD's development pissed me off and i really hate the way they treated stuff. I will say to you guys what I say to all the Sonic fans - you can demand a remake of game x and game y until you are blue (or purple in your case) in the face, its not going to happen frankly. SEGA fans seem to have this thing where whatever is given to them they bash it and say it is not as good as the original. It gets rather depressing after a while.
Things move on in that regard alas... any new NiGHTS would be new. Now excuse me while I go off and work in a sickly sort of way.

To be honest, back in the day when it was announced SEGA would no longer be making hardware anymore, i thought they'd be finished and it depressed the crap out of me. To see them still making games (that i can enjoy) somewhat amazes me.
I was discussing buisness and companies with DiGi at about 4am today and i know for a fact with my own little venture I'd be hard pressed to make everyone happy. I know that my new stuff may not be as liked as my original ideas. I know that i can't (and wont) do every suggestion passed onto me by people who like my work because then the project wouldn't be mine. Now imagine that on a bigger scale involving whole teams of people who get paid wages.
JoD could have been completely terrible. It could have made us hate the franchise and leave. But we're all (minus a few) still here with enough aprecaition of NiGHTS be it for the original or the new game.
12 years is a really long time guys...

Sitting in the admin seat has given me a different view on things rather than how it used to be when i was just an average member. You hear a whole lot more going on behind the scenes and when it comes to the public they flip up everything and change things for unknown reasons and you're left thinking "what the hell are you saying? that's not what's going on"
I keep thinking about Iizuka's statement "this is for the fans and to generate new ones." I personaly think it was less for the fans but more as a tool to bring back something that there's been hype for in order the generate new customers and bring in more money. NiGHTS has always been talked about on and offline. People loved the original and it became such a huge cult classic that Sega probably used that status to make a new game in hopes of bringing more income in, not because the old fans wanted it. The old fans have done more for NiGHTS than the company has. What was the reason Japan only got the PS2 version of the remake when the fanbase that has been running this thing is situated in America and the UK? We have Japanese people coming to this site because there is no Japanese website equivalent. It just seems wasted.
And if it wasn't for you Arch' then we would have zero from Sega because they never ever addressed us in all the years we've been here. Never. I know it's your job to basically keep the communities intouch anyway but at least you treat us like friends and perhaps if there were more people in Sega who worked similar to you then the company would feel a little more hearted. Sega's PR is a joke by every angle and they should be ashamed of themselves for treating us the way they have, from the US to Amsterdam. Ignoring us when all we've done for 12 years is looked after the character they gave us was quite rude and if you had not of contacted us when you did i probably would have lost all faith in that company.
Arch', i'm not saying things to offend you. Far from it. You know me though and you know i have a strong word sometimes because i tend to fight for what i believe in. I've seen this fanbase when Sega has not and it puts me at a different angle from Sega and the way the see us. Every fanbase has it's own problems - ours was we had to keep NiGHTS alive by ourselves, using the fandom as a means to make sure he doesn't die out. NiD gave us so much that we didn't want to let go. There was an air of magic in it that really did change peoples lives. Can i honestly sit here and say JoD is going to do the same? Being honest, who knows? We'll have to wait another decade to find that out. It just felt that for what we went through in 12 years, JoD felt nice but it didn't feel like it was for us. The homages in the game made me smile but that was all they were - homages. Not something to make up for after 12 years.

Everybody needs to make money.
Yes, people need money in order to live, but all this greed BS that is parading all over the fandom (even Nintendo is still trying to convince us, after their GCN slump) is making me annoyed to no end. Everyone remember that Gamespot scandal months ago? It sickened me knowing that some compenies (whether this is true or not is still debatable) would threaten to pull support if their game didn't get a good review. Hence why I only read reviews from non-professional sites: IE N-Sider, Nintendojo and Nintendo World Report.
NiGHTS has always been talked about on and offline. People loved the original and it became such a huge cult classic that Sega probably used that status to make a new game in hopes of bringing more income in, not because the old fans wanted it. The old fans have done more for NiGHTS than the company has.
Having missed the original Saturn version, the NiGHTS franchise has always intrigued me. I started playing the N64 during that time, with Super Mario 64. If I had played NiGHTS (with that sexy 3-D controller), I would have swallowed up NiGHTS more then Mario 64. Heck, I heard even Shigeru Miyamoto wanted to make NiGHTS Into Dreams. The creator of Zelda and Mario. Wow.
What was the reason Japan only got the PS2 version of the remake when the fanbase that has been running this thing is situated in America and the UK? We have Japanese people coming to this site because there is no Japanese website equivalent. It just seems wasted.
I must ask: Arch, why aren't we getting the NiGHTS remake? Would sad kitty eyes work for Sega?
Many Nintendo games also encountered this problem. Think Mother 3, everyone. =(
Will still love you Arch, but... sometimes we fans feel scorned.

according to Mr. Valintine
Mr. Iisuka mentioned something about "games for the fans and for generating new ones." It makes sense that they are more focused with Sonic since he is more widely known than NiGHTS. I believe they hoped to get a large fanbase for NiGHTS by selling on the wii, unfortunately, most gamers have stuck to the 360 and ps3 rather than a wii while the wii's are mostly bought by families who simply want a cheap console and don't want to get too deep into gaming. This is also why Wii Play sold more than 9 million copies while more famous games were left out of the rush lets see...
Super Mario Galaxy (5.19 million)
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (4.3 million)
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2.924 million approximately)
sad isn't it? (don't get me wrong these are fairly good numbers but seriously, wii play takes second in the wii's top sales over these gems? wii sports getting top of course with almost 18 million for obvious reasons)
I think Sega simply got a bad console to start showing off NiGHTS on... (but I like to blame owl) I still think there's hope for NiGHTS if I was in sega I'd say... the DS.......... huh....
sounds odd right? or the PS3 now you probably think I'm crazy but I'm just looking at statistics.
360 is focused too much of shooters for them to be look at a game like NiGHTS
PSP's just not doin well
DS has some variety plus the stylus "might" work
PS3 is gonna make a comeback this year and its dedicated to variety and on top of that if your plann'in on gettin a blueray player the ps3 costs less and on top of that the movies play better since it has a hard drive! messed up huh?
So I guess were back to waitin... and waitin... and waitin..........

Indeed it came bundled for the controller which makes it less bad since it means that the game only costs about £5.

Hehe, sounds awesome. Or, paraloop pointy glass shards from Crystal Castle with Owl to impale him in 360 degrees of directions. Highest damage is the winner! Bonus points if he dies.

I mean, there are plenty of things I didn't like though. I didn't even attempt the Wiimote; I went straight for classic analog controller. The mask thing seemed almost pointless for the most part. I mean, when I first heard they were gonna do the mask thing, I thought it was lame-o because NiGHTS is a shapeshifter anyway, right?
I'd like to see another NiGHTS game, but only if it doesn't end up like the millions of pathetic Sonic sequels we've been seeing. (my poor childhood! ;_
One of my biggest fears is that they would possibly turn Reala into something like angsty Shadow for all the fangirls/boys.

There's no reason for him to be angsty...provided that they don't give him one. It'd be totally out of character for him to be angsty about something in the first place.

I refer you all back to the Iizuka interview where he explained (I believe Graham off of SEGA Nerds asked the question) that there was some sort of Japanese fund to safeguard various titles via ports etc which is why it was a Jap only deal. SEGA West? Not happening.
Also guys plz don't get me wrong - I'm NOT angry with you....I just don't want you going down the Sonic fan route where everything is always bad and "if its not exactly like original we don't care".
PSP? I dunno whats happening with PSP but can you name the last titles that SEGA released on PSP (I'm not counting FM2008 here)? Sonic Rivals 2, Crush and Alien Syndrome to my knowledge. You know how many there are planned at this time? Iron Man.
....no seriously, THAT'S IT. There might be something in the future I suppose (Beijing maybe) but this year thats the only PSP title we have confirmed.
Also, there's no reason for him (Reala) to be angsty... except the whole thing of him losing all the time,

I was reading Roareye Black's rant at The Sonic Stadium forums and although he really went to town with that post of his he made some honest points that i don't like hearing but it's the damn truth and i have to agree with him. He's right. There is so much bullshit behind Sega that it really is making the company look really bad. I praise the community team you guys are running because you're doing a great job and you give us the attention we deserve...but things higher up in Sega need to change. It's not an option, it NEEDS to change or else they will lose every f*!*ing fan that put them in their high-seat to begin with.
This 'Sonic Commitee' that Roareye mentioned - bloody unbelievable. Honestly. No wonder Sonic has gone the way he has if a bunch of idiots are running things. I don't want that to happen to NiGHTS because NiGHTS stood for something else. If Sega drag NiGHTS down the same path then this fanbase will go to hell and i don't want to see that happen.
The more i think about it, the more i really don't wanna see a new NiGHTS game.

What the core selling point of NiGHTS would be is a split thing to different people. Some would say flying with speed, some would say the arcadelike score system, some would say the mad colorful glittery graphics, some would say the concept itself. I think until SEGA figures out what made NiGHTS special in the first place and then markets it to the biggest potential area, then people will always be unsure of it to even try it.
Journey of Dreams wasn't as tragic as i was fearing it would be. I was actualy pleasantly suprised with some parts i enjoyed more than the original at times. They both have good points and bad points. I can name tons of things wrong with the original. If we're going to be honest here, Christmas NiGHTS, had it been an actual on sale game, could have been a lot more. But it was free, and free is great. There's always tons you can pack into a game, be it NiD or JoD. It's all down to time. And because games take longer to make thesedays because of the technology and artist/creative work required compared to pixels on a Megadrive in the 90's- things tend to end up rushed to cut costs and stay on schedule. So much stuff seems to get shoved into games at the last minute half arsedly these days, it's a real shame. Things were cut from JoD that make me a sad panda because they were good things. Time time time. Time really is money.
As long as SEGA has been around the JP company has been VERY hard to deal with from both a western, fan AND company point of view, i used to hear about it informaly all the time, even as far back as 1995. It's just the way things go. The only thing that can realisticly be done to improve the situation is if both SOA and SOE -REALLY- rely on their fans to back them up and understand what the actual political mechanics are. There's no point blaming the western companies for something they can't actualy improve instantly if SOJ are being arsey about it. It's sort of like there's lots of people in SEGA who know what is good and bad but there are times when they can't do much but just do their job as good as they can. SOJ will never change because they are very set in their ways. As far as theyre concerned if a person buys it, it doesn't matter if they love it 100% as long as they sold a copy. Because the interest building up on their heads must be truely frightening. They don't have the time nor money to completely turn a company around on a whim. I think the only way that would happen is if they went bankrupt and had to start from scratch.
I was writing a letter today to SEGA Europe praising them for the community work done recently and It's downright frustrating to see parts of the company REALLY GETTING IT RIGHT and other parts completely failing in the brain to see obvious things that is making them lose customers. Although SOA have been personaly a tad annoying imo lately compared to how they used to be, i can't help but feel sorry for them and SOE.
The Sonic fandom have had so many games it sometimes makes my head hurt to imagine what it'd feel like if i was still as big a fan as i used to be in the 90's.
I think i said to you in the podcast actually Arch, about JoD, i didn't make myself clear enough at the time but the point i was trying to make was you can have something completely new- or something completely remade and old. JoD was esentialy a weird mix of taking things we loved and writing over them with odd new versions of kind of the same thing but not. Homage doesn't have to be renaming something so it sounds like something else you liked when you wanted to either see the original CONTINUE or just see something shiny and new. That's just kind of frustrating, especialy since we're not getting the PS2 version here. Take Sonic 2 for instance as a simple example. Sonic 1 had all those zones, bosses and Sonic as the lead. Sonic 2 had new characters, NEW zones and new stuff to do. It was a proper sequal because it made sense. I'm still not sure to this day if JoD is supposed to be a sequal to NiD. It confuses the crap out of me lol. It's either a new 'take' of the original game or not an actual sequal at all. Which makes me wonder if any new NiGHTS games in the future will be complete rehashes of the last last game. Sort of like how FF does it.
Anyways I'm rambling.
If NiGHTS 3 was to have a new City, new kids, another redesigned version of NiGHTS and bosses that looked similar to the last bosses i think i might understand the direction JoD was aiming for.
If Reala ever turns good in a NiGHTS game and ends up fighting against Wizeman and is then replaced by a 'better' Nightmaren i will seriously lose all faith in the creative types lol. Reala is a great baddie, he needs to stay that way, along with Wizeman. Reala laughs at emos and eats them for breakfast.
