Hey, I was curious (an often occurrence) whether anybody else on this forum played a musical instrument. I figured this could start some nice discussion in what we like to play, our experiences, etc.

I myself have been playing Trumpet roughly half my life. Unfortunately I'm grossly out of practice. Two years ago the ol' girl crapped out on me. The valves got too worn to move very well and my sound sucked as a result. It was used when I got it so it's not surprising. I'm saving for a brand spanking new one.

I normally play concert and jazz but I was forced against my will to do marching band for a brief time. I hated most of it, but it did have the one nice benefit of letting me play in a New Orleans Mardi Gras parade.

Anyone else play something?

I've been fooling around on the geetar for a few years (since that was when I finally got my hands on one), wish I could say I had an instrument I really know well

I played Baratone from the age of 8 or something. I was in a lot of musical stage stuff from a very young age and was damn good at it. I can play anything with 3 valves by ear (including trumpet). Euphonium, and occarina (only 4 hole though).

Im still learning flute and i suxxor.

I used to play the clarinet, and was pretty good at it. Started in third grade and stopped in seventh or eight grade. Partly because my favourite teachers had retired and their replacement kinda sucked, partly because it along with another hobby stole most of my free time. Haven't touch the clarinet since, though I would like to in the future. Need to replace the mouthpiece though, it has seen better days ^_^

I've been playing flute for around 3 and a half years now, it was the only school instrument I could actually pick up and play at the time ((tried clarinet...trombone...you wouldn't believe the horror)). Last year my parents bought the flute for me... I usually play concert band music, but I'm trying to get some game/movie sheet music right now.

I've been Playing the Piano for about 4-to-5 years, although without a Teacher. I can't really play any song's (Unless you include Tertis Music A.), but i can Imrpovise well on it. Im currently working on my First "Piano-Only " Composition.

My diggest Musical Point is Digitaly Made music. I understand it's not an instrument, but hey, 'tis something i've been doingfor about 7 years, 8 years around about March. I tend to use Music 2000 for my Compositions, a PS1 Game, and Record it using an MP3. (Thats how i did the Music now up on the site, under my Musician name"J-Vibe")

Recently, however, i came into posession of 3 Ejay Composers- "Techno 3- Summer Sessions", "Dance 06" and "Clubworld". Im still working my way around them at this point.

Ditto on those here but more organ and keyboard than piano. I'm more of an amateur vocalist though, I've done a few solo's on stage at the Mac Bob over the years with the 'Scout and Guide Gang Show'. : )

Singing is fun, the voice is after all a very versatile instrument : )

There's something you've forgotten
That's how to laugh and dance and smile and sing
When you're feeling in the dumps
Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing."

Piano for twelve years and violin for eight years.

I'm also dying to learn saxophone and cello but can't find a teacher around my area... ditto that one with voice lessons.
I sing a heck of a lot in my spare time, and hope I sound decently well, but without professional instruction I'll never be able to fine-tune what talent I may have. Oh well. I try!

Like my buddy Xay up there, I've also been composing music for years... literally since I started learning piano. Seriously. That's the reason my mother got me into the instrument-- even in my early childhood, I was constantly playing that thing at random, and I didn't sound half-bad either.

So I've got quite a few years of composition experience under my belt... and as a result am currently "working for" two fellow NiD members as a musician. XD Oh but I love it.

Anyone else compose, besides/or opposed to knowing how to play an instrument?

Ooh, I probably have no need to tell you this, but what I would try would be the trill at the end of the main theme's variant played at the very end of the game (called "NiGHTS will return", I think), the one that sounds like the merge.. or the merge, whichever..

Now I want a piccolo >,,<

Hell yes I'm going to try that. ;)

If I like the piccolo enough (and am good enough at it) I might even get to play it in our concerts.

In regards to composition, I'm trying to learn to make techno with Propellerhead's Reason program. Damn though, that stuff is complicated. I'm nowhere near proficient enough to use it well. There's a lot of stuff to learn. Trying to compose something without any prior knowledge about how real lifel mixing is done is basically like having somebody teach you to swim by shoving you in a pool and telling you not to drown.

Erm... I've played the violin for 3.5 (school) years... I'm in our orchestra and stuff, though I don't think I'm that good. I'm usually in the upper-half of the Violin II section though.

Right, proper post now that I'm not falling asleep.

Started playing guitar on my 16th birthday (2000). Ended up working in the shop where I had lessons. Lessons stopped as we didn't have time when I was working, but it did mean I got to teach myself from all the books, and play any instrument/amp I wanted to.

Went to uni (2003) and had a band that played student's union, local venues, surrounding towns/cities.

Still playing now (band ended when uni did) and still loving it. I play a range of stuff from soft acoustic stuff to blues, classic rock and even into In Flames and Children of Bodom levels of speed metal.

I play through either my Fender Yale Reverb or my Line 6 Spider II.

...Does singing count?

Small bit of piano, at least enough to know what keys are what notes. And self-taught with a little skill on the harp. (And half the time it's the Song of Time from Ocarina of Time.)

I started playing Guitar about 3 years ago. Took lessons for the best part of a year, then gave them up, along with the guitar playing, for about another year. Then, when I moved into 6th year at school, and decided to crash Higher Music, with Guitar as one of my instruments, I decided I better get playing again. And the progress I've made since is quite substantial for me. I'm absolutely loving playing again.Me and my friend (SCRiBBLER) fanny about playing during school. I'm sure when he sees this topic he'll post something up, as he's a hell of alot more musically inclinced than I, and a far better guitarist.

I started on a very standard crappy cheap Acoustic, from no particular make. Got a Stagg Les Paul-style electric the christmas before I gave up the lessons.

This week my parents just bought me the best christmas present ever.

I played violin for a year. Then decided that I hated it and quit.

Now I've been playing flute for 6 years. Now I'm pondering the idea of quitting because.....playing in band just doesn't appeal to me anymore. I rarely practice. :/ (not that I really practiced anyway, tee hee) I don't like our new music (grade 6/college stuff = DO NOT WANT), and the other students kind of suck. :/

I'm trying to learn piano but am PHAILING in the process. D': I can only play "Midna's Desperate Hour" on it. XD

I actually played the french horn for years, from 6th grade right up through college. I also majored in music at one point, and learned some music composition and such. I have doodled with playing guitar and keyboard, but never really learned either of them. Musical composition is a pain in the backside, too. Way too many rules.

Well let's see...

- When I was 10 I took 2 years of guitar lessons, got decent at it, but obviously lost it over the years. I just started reading tabs again (I picked it up about April of last year) and I'm getting better every day.
- Had a small stint with the piano; I'm sure with some quick practice I could get back to where I was with it.
- I was in my school's concert band with a terrible-sounding trumpet for about 5 years; the thing is long since beaten up, dented, and using a starter mouthpiece so it sounds terrible.
- If you count plugging a rock band drum controller into a PC and running a virtual synthesizer, I'm learning drums

Other than that my expertise here comes from using mixing tools such as Sony ACID and other sound editors. I've been mixing in my free time since my sophomore year in high school (~4 years ago). I haven't quite done a NiGHTS remix yet but it's on my agenda.

I've been playing flute since I was in fifth grade, so that's about....seven/eight years. Mostly band stuff, but I've recently been playing sheets I've found on the internet like FFX music and I've been practicing Disney music -some of those songs are harder than they seem- usually Pochahantas. I'm dying to learn how to play some NiGHTS songs like Dreams Dreams and that song that plays in Bellbridge.

It's kinda annoying in my area, because at any music store I go to it's always guitar, piano, or trumpet, no flute books. So I usually just get the piano ones.

I play the diatonic accordion. I'm not very good at the moment but I practice every day and am sure to improve! It is pretty much the best instrument ever.
I also have/play the electric kazoo and the Jew's Harp. I love both greatly but do not know if they really count as instruments...

As a kid I played the trumpet, recorder, drums, and guitar. The only one of those that was not school-related was drums and I was never too good at any of them.
