I am female and view NiGHTS as a hermaphrodite.

...

That wasn't a choice though, so I voted "androgynous".

Personally, referring to NiGHTS as just NiGHTS is very impersonal.. almost makes me feel detached. I know NiGHTS is genderless, but I usually see NiGHTS as a he in my eyes. And I'm female.

Interesting how so few here think of NiGHTS as female, yet all my family and friends (who aren't NiGHTS fans) call him a she.

I call NiGHTS him. I find EXTREMLY disrespectful to call anything (people, characters) it. (I've had to deal with being called "it" due to my own natural androgyny.) I know he has no gender, but I call him... him/he.
I've actually grown fond of the idea that he can change genders at will, so he can relate to the particular dreamer more directly.

I actually have a character just like that... that I made before I got into NiGHTS. He's technically a gender-less alien, but I refer to him as male. I suppose I just attatched that view to NiGHTS.

Funny Thing though:
Mom: He looks really girly... for a guy.
Me: Well, he doesn't really have a gender.
Mom: Oh. *pause* So I'm just gonna call him a she now.

Exactly what everyone I know says! That is, except for my mom. She said:
"So is he...gay?"
"No, he's both." (me)
"What?!"
*laughing* "He's a boy AND a girl."
*groan* "That's even worse."

It's mostly just the voice acting in JoD, but I (male) consider NiGHTS to be anywhere from overtly female to completely androgynous.

I usually call NiGHTS "he" though--mostly for ease of use.

Good Lord, we're still talking about this? :)

Well, I'm female, and I've always seen NiGHTS as androgynous. The idea of attaching a gender to a dream creature just always seemed silly to me. And it makes sense to me that s/he would become more feminine or masculine to relate to individual dreamers.

I see Reala as genderless too, but he looks too manly to refer to him as such. ^_^ But that's fine, 'cause JoD NiGHTS gives off some serious "girl" vibes... enough that I almost always call her "she" now. Hey, if she's genderless, why not?

I'm female, and I've always seen NiGHTS as male.
That's because, back when I didn't know what he was, to me he didn't look like a girl, so he was a boy by default.
So even after I learned that he was actually genderless or whatever, I kept seeing him as male.
Though because of his voice in Journey of Dreams, now I tend to see him as genderless sometimes.

I thought NiGHTS was a boy when I first saw him in NiD, but the community here quickly got me with the "genderless" theory.

Original NiGHTS I still tend towards male, but JoD NiGHTS seems more feminine. Probably the voice and the fact that I've only played Helen's story.

(Well, that and she's pretty much opposite to Reala in every way possible... so if he's the masculine one...)

Tough to say. I know NiGHTS is androgynous, but I tend to view NiGHTS as male in NiD, and CLEARLY androgynous in JoD.

In NiD, he seemed more like a little boy between the ages of 7 and 15. I still view him as male, enough though he's got that high pitched squeal of a voice, but when he shouts "APTIVA!" he sounds more like an exasperated boy.

In JoD, WHY does everyone think s/he has
Spoiler
? *censored because of young viewers* I simply DO NOT see it...He sounded EXTREMELY feminine*well, DUH, his VA is a girl* and even looked a little feminine in CGI. In the normal cutscenes, he seems slightly more masculine in terms of look and in Will's story sounds a bit more masculine. I usually view him as either a tomboy, a boy with feminine traits, or androgynous with feminine looks and voice, but a boy's personality*such as him telling Wizeman to shut up. he seemed a tad more masculine there*.

Spoiler

Well, I just think the character comes off as more feminine in JoD, but I agree with you about the original. Maybe when I see Will's story, I'll see the balance more. But s/he is definitely physically androgynous... that hasn't changed.

Back in 96 I thought NiGHTS was male, because Sega's main characters always seemed to be male, so I assumed he was. Later I got confused when a site swore up and down he was female. Then I discovered this beautiful site, and finally knew the real answer. :o

Though I still tend to think of him as male...a very feminine male. XD

Eh, I'm female and voted androgynous, though "How did you naturally see NiGHTS" and "how do you see NiGHTS now" are different questions entirely. ^^;

I always thought of him as male (heck, I still use male pronouns, as you can see) before I played JoD and heard the voice. Then I went "Wait a minute...it's a girl?" O.o; But after I looked up stuff online and encountered the genderless/androgynous explanations, I completely and willingly adopted them. ^^ I had actually just previously written a story about a character with no physical gender.

But, lol, I recently took my NiGHTS and Reala plushies to Japanese class for show-and-tell, and the first question the teacher asked after my presentation was "Is it a boy or a girl?" (In Japanese) XD Yeah, that always comes up.

You know, I should start a poll like this somewhere about Sheik from Legend of Zelda.

One of my friends and I have a running debate over whether Sheik is male or female. I say either male or pretending to be male, and he says female.

I could go on about reasons why and all of that, but no reason to hijack the thread. :) Just thought it bore mentioning that NiGHTS isn't the only hotly debated video game character gender in the world. :)

I acctually alternate with NiGHTS' gender. Sometimes I say, "he' sometimes I say, "she." So I just voted, "Androgynous."

Although I first saw NiGHTS as, "he" but then I looked at a forum in a gaming website that said that NiGHTS was genderless. I believed that, it is very plausible after all.

I'm a girl that is constantly being mistaken for a boy. >.< When I first discovered the game I thought NiGHTS was a boy for sure. Then I figured he/she would have a gender depending on who NiGHTS dualized with. I heard the Androgynous theory and thought, "That's fine, NiGHTS is a kind dream after all." Then I Played the Wii version and heard NiGHTS' voice. *criiinge* I just don't think it fits. I would have prefered a young boy voice than the girly one they used.

But isn't it funny? Nobody ever seems to question Reala's gender. As NiGHTS sibling, wouldn't he/she hard to figure out too? Something about Reala screams "male."

Actually I have. In the beginning I couldn't tell for sure, but I ended up concluding that Reala was just a female with a very deep voice (reminds me a bit of Grace Jones). But that changed when I got Journey of Dreams. Now he/she has suddenly scrapped the make-up and wears a mask instead, and the voice is undoubtly male.
So as far as I'm concerned, Reala in NiD is female, and Reala in JoD is male. I guess I've accepted the fact that sex change operations can occur in the dream world.

I'm a girl, and I always thought Nights was male. In the first game, he looks kinda boyish, and they always wrote "he" in the game guide/manual/etc, so I'll probably forever feel that way. But I'm gullible. It took me a few years to catch on that he was supposed to be androgynous. But if I had only come into the fandom at JoD, I would definitely think Nights is a girl. There is nothing about him in the new game that strikes me as masculine. In fact, I think they overdid it because he seems too girly to me, from his voice to his outfit to his huge eyelashes. It was kind of heartbreaking to me.

On a sidenote, I've never seen Reala as androgynous. Even though Nights and Reala should be equals, I think they've always tipped the scales to make Reala male. He's got beefy arms, a masculine voice, and the only dreamer we ever saw him dualize with was Roger, in the Archie comics. Seems unfair to me.

I could digress into my fanfic-like argument of, "Maybe Wizeman created Reala first, as a male, but he was imperfect because he had a gender (seriously, we all understand about hormones and so on). Thus, Nights was created last, and was perfect because he was genderless." Blah blah blah...

JoD really played up the genders of NiGHTS and Reala. I think that it was to show that they are opposites- NiGHTS is gentle and faminine, and Reala is tough and masculine. Together, they become neutral, with no gender traits or personality; one is the shadow of the other.

When I first saw him I couldn't think which gender he is. :) Really he just looks like both.
Though NiGHTS can gender shift according to the visitor dualized with him.

I have no idea but right now I felt like NiGHTS being genderless disturbs me. :S

Anyway, he is genderless, why should he have a gender? Nightmarens dont reproduce. :D

Quenn Bella, Bomamba, Wizeman and Reala seems they have certain genders but they are genderless too. :P

I am female and I voted that NiGHTS is male and androgynous.

My reasoning is that I usually call NiGHTS "he," but I am absolutely okay with whenever someone calls NiGHTS "she" as well.

If I met someone in person who believes that NiGHTS is female, I will let him or her know that I personally believe NiGHTS is male or androgynous, and for the sake of arguement I will refer to NiGHTS as "she" if I were to have a conversation about NiGHTS with the said person, to make things less confusing.

Also, purple is a combination of pink and blue (or red and blue, if you want to use primary colors). Purple is in between one color and the other; transitional, if you will. It's been my #1 favorite color from the very beginning, which tells me a lot about myself. :)

To me, NiGHTS kind of looks like a female (but although is stated to being genderless) to me in some ways whenever I look at the thick bushy eyebrows along with the sparkly blue eyes. I'm not exactly sure if I'd consider him as a male, though I guess it's one of those things to which people these days would judge their own opinions on how to make strange things work, kinda.

I'm male, and even knowing that she is genderless/androgynous/whatever... I allways saw NiGHTS as female.
I think it's because of her pink/purple outfit, her big eyelashes, and her not-muscular body. All characteristics most associated with girls, in our society.
And SEGA giving her a female voice in JoD, just enforced my view of NiGHTS as a girl.

I'm female. To me, NiGHTs can be either gender - it depends who he possesses. I see NiGHTs s a child, too early in his/her development to have that defined a gender, because he always possesses children. I tend to say 'he' though.

I always found NiGHTS as a boy. In all his cameos in the sonic games i've collected over the years, it never seemed to occur to me that NiGHTS could possibly be a girl. He doesn't exactly have anything particularly feminine about him minus the long eyelashes he got in JoD, but eyelashes? Really?

Thats why I call NiGHTS a boy, and thats why i voted that thats how i see NiGHTS. It's very important to be distinctive about seeing, though. The way NiGHTS seems to work is that he makes all sorts of changes to himself depending on whose dream he's in. It isn't necessarily genderal and such, but also things like that vest in JoD, and other things of that sort. I see NiGHTS as a boy, but i would never argue that he's solely a boy, and if i ever had to leave my dreams with him to enter someone elses like in the games (i wish), i'd have to accept that he changes depending on whose dreaming. But if no one is dreaming, but rather the fanbase is talking, i use He because that's what he'd be in my dreams if he ever were to enter them. Which would be totally awesome.

EDIT: Also, Reala always struck me as a female, but thats just from art I've seen, considering that i've yet to get a copy of JoD.

I'm female and I consider NiGHTS a female. I know that NiGHTS does not have an actual gender, but that's just how I see it. I know this topic is very old, but I figured I'd throw my two cents in here! I'm a female, and I've always seen NiGHTS as a male. Before I played the games I saw some screenshots and I assumed NiGHTS was male for some reason and never bothered to check if I was right (whoops!).

Of course after more research and finding this site I understand now that NiGHTS is androgynous, however it's still ingrained in my head from years ago that something about him reads as "male" to me, so I still see NiGHTS as a male.

JoD didn't help though; I do agree with some that NiGHTS seems to be more on the feminine side in terms of voice and appearance, but that hasn't changed how I see him.
