The day has come! The first of the NiGHTS into Dreams HD re-releases is here! I gotta admit, hearing the NiGHTS theme through my PS3 and seeing the ol' jester in beautiful HD almost brought a tear to my eye. And with a score of 4.92 out of 5 with 81 ratings on its launch day as well...looking great so far!
Yet, something doesn't feel right. Going from the Saturn to the PS2 port felt fine once I got over the feel of the new joystick. But in going from PS2 to PS3...it feels like something has changed. Is it just me, or does character movement have an overly sensitive tendency to "snap" to the cardinal directions? Flying horizontally or vertically, I feel a dead zone of at least 20 degrees before the character changes direction. It's making precision maneuvers almost impossible.
Tested with two different controllers in both game modes (BRAND NEW DREAM and SEGA SATURN DREAM). I'm not crazy, am I?

It felt wonky to me, too. I never got the chance to play the PS2 version, so I don't have that comparison, but I wasn't able to make link chains that I often can even when out of practice. I thought it was just the controller, because I've only ever played NiD with the 3D Saturn pad and my thumbs are disproportionately short. Well, that makes me a little sad that it's the game itself. Hopefully I can adjust.

Honestly I did feel something off but, as digi explained, it's just a learning curve to handle. The game is certainly not unplayable guys and I've beaten the whole game on new dreams and classic plus the Christmas nights extra.
I sorta played the ps2 version and it didn't feel all that different to me but yeah it was definitely different compared to the Saturn console ver.

I have to agree that the controls felt different to me, coming from the Xbox 360 version. But I honestly don't see any reason why it keeps someone from playing it. Remakes aren't going to be 100% 1:1 with their original version. The pros more than outweigh the cons though, you get a huge bump in graphics, all the content from NiGHTS and Christmas NiGHTS, Online Leaderboards, etc. Initial reactions are always negative with remakes, it's nothing unusual. But over time, you realize that just because you're not getting everything you're used to doesn't mean you can't adjust to what's new.
But yes, it was weird playing the game like I've always have on the Saturn version to see that I'm missing rings and blue chips. Just means now I need to work on my new skills with the game.
But who knows, SEGA might recognize the difference and offer customization options to make it better or even just update the controls altogether.

It remains to be seen how the PC version will turn out. With the PC, you can use any kind of controller, and every controller has its own level of sensitivity. There are also potential mods to take into consideration. I hope we get a release date soon. There has to be a reason why the PC version is coming out last.
