Poll: The beloved Dreamcast.. vs the innovative, more powerful Wii (66 member(s) have cast votes)

The Wii has much better capabilities. But many might still have preffered NiGHTS 2 on the Dreamcast. What say you?

  1. Dreamcast (17 votes [25.76%])

    Percentage of vote: 25.76%

  2. Wii (49 votes [74.24%])

    Percentage of vote: 74.24%

At this point, hard for me to say. It hurts to know that Sonic Team started a project on the Dreamcast and quit. NiGHTS 2 was that game we DC owners wanted and never got. But there's no denying the Wii hardware can provide a better game.

The Dreamcast is my favourite console ever. Some of my most cherished games find a home on that system and it was my first dive into the world of CD gaming (don't worry, I've since picked up all the others... XD)... and after discussing this internally, I really wish I could go back and vote in its favour.
If the game had come out on the Dreamcast, NiGHTS could potentially be a thriving series of games and not relagated to the horrendously short development cycle JoD is being subject to... though to be fair, that didn't help Sonic much...
Had it come out then, Wii might have gotten NiGHTS 3, or even 4 as a launch title.

So in conclusion: I actually voted Dreamcast, not Wii! XD

Interesting idea.. I'm in the camp that says Sonic's last good game was still Sonic Adventure 2. It's as if their mojo died along with Sega's last console. Luckily it seems Sonic Team is really excited to be doing JoD, so here's hoping it comes out as the game we've all been praying for. I think it's safe to say I'd still rather have had NiGHTS 2 on the Dreamcast back in 2000. My vote is Dreamcast. NiGHTS on the Wii is fine, but you can't deny history. The Dreamcast has the word 'dream' right in there. No NiGHTS game? Come on.

Dreamcast! Then, it's just another reason to get one. But, I would have only gotten it recently. So, you know, I voted for Dreamcast {which would have made Dreamcast live it to its name} but hey, I'm glad it's coming out for Wii anyway.

I like the wii, but now i wish that they never stopped on AiR NiGHTS. If they didnt, me and my uncle mightve had a chance to play NiGHTS on his dreamcast before he passed away.

Aww..sorry to hear about your loss :) .. but he sounds like a cool uncle, owning a Dreamcast. That's awesome. He was a NiGHTS fan as well?

Im not sure. He was 19 when he died, i was 7. Whether he was a fan or heard of it wa never known. But I know he wouldve liked it. He had a PS1 and a Dreamcast, and had a NES and SNES in his younger days. He wouldve loved it, I know.

It would've been cool to see NiGHTS 2 on the Dreamcast... mostly for the idea of keeping things alive (really, I still have to wonder if the short time-frame between announcing the current sequel and its release date really gives enough time for hype other than with the long-term people out there.. not so much enough to draw in more new people--anyway...).

The Dreamcast was pretty short-lived, but I think the graphics were pretty stellar for when it came out. I remember watching my friend play Sonic Adventure.. very crisp and clear. I've yet to play more games on it than the few I currently have (hah, I think I have just Sonic Adventure and Berserk..).

GD ROMS are out of production as of a few months ago, so it would be impossible.

But the Dreamcast was a failure, sorry fanboys, it was. Bad controller, bad VMU gimick, rushed out onto the market, managed to alienate third party developers by being released so soon after Saturn etc. Sure it had some awesome games (Sonic Adventure, Space Channel 5, Soul Calibur, Powerstone 1/2 etc), though most of the greats were arcate ports. There's a sense of nostaliga attatched to the system which I feel is quite unjustified. In its defense though, when mine broke the casing wouldn't smash, no matter how many windows I dropped it out of (I was bored you see).

A NiGHTS on DC may have worked if they'd gone with the Wii Remotish proto controler, but as they went with the deformed rocket thing then it would have seemed just the same as the Saturn one, dull. The Wii is so far sucessful with a wider audience and a slightly more interesting control method. The only thing I don't agree with is the development time (as Sairus pointed out).

(Dreamcast had a nice logo in Europe though)

I'm inclined to agree with Sairus: AiR NiGHTS, in its "original" Dreamcast form would have been wonderful. If it had been out for DC, NiGHTS 2 would most likely have much wider recognition and a far larger fanbase, and therefore more incentive for further sequels. It could have had more sequels by now, more gameplay, and so on and so on. The end result of this is that, since it is "Sega's treasured franchise," they likely would have paid closer attention to the direction in which the series moved than with Sonic and, therefore, had many more "pure" games -- thus sparing it, as a whole franchise, the fate of the Sonic games. If any of that made sense.

I think he means would you have rathered if NiGHTS 2 came out on the Dreamcast, as it was potentially going to do, back in the day, not would you like it to come out on the Dreamcast now... I thought the latter when I first read it, hence my spoiled vote.

And it did have a nice logo over here in Europe, didn't it?

Yeah I know he meant back in the day, hence the rest of the answer. I was joust pointing out that there's no possibility of a DC version now, ever.

And yes, the Euro logo was nice, it looked much better in blue.

It would have been cool to see it on Dreamcast and probably would have done something for the popularity of both. But, don't we face same issues with this sequel not living up to NiD standards and have a few complaints? If the story, etc in AiR NiGHTS was crap, then perhaps NiGHTS would have died or there would have at least been some serious disappointment. It would have been interesting and cool though.

I like that it's being released on Wii. I'm enjoying the Wiimote mostly, so I'm a bit biased perhaps, and I like the idea of flying by simply tilting/moving my hand, but I'm also hoping that the little things and the game overall aren't disappointing. ...Do I make any sense?

Due to the Dreamcasts low sales, it's unlikely the game would have been commercial success, which would do anything but open the door for more sequels. It'd be just like the original NiGHTS; released onto a dying console and thrown into obscurity.

NiGHTS is like a monument to SEGA's gambling attitude in a way.

Hmm, I'm voting the Wii for this one for a few reasons. While I understand the DC was an awesome addition to the hardware lineup of Sega, I never actually owned/played one, so I'm not familiar with the controls/how it handles/etc. Is it a good comparaison to the Saturn in terms of response/controller feel?

Also, releasing a game onto an older system would be great for nostalgia reasons, but a lot of current hardware owners would be a bit miffed. Especially if you're unable to get a hold of a DC, even through pawn stores or eBay (which can be pricey enough as it is).

Consoles have come a ways since the DC, so things like graphics, audio and handling (heck, just look at the controller) have improved a heckuva lot. While it would be great to see NiGHTS on the DC as per the original plan, I'd love to see how great he can look on a NextGen console too.

I voted Wii. Don't get me wrong, I love the Dreamcast and if you asked me back in the late 90s I would still get excited at the prospect of the sequel. However, knowing what I know now, some of the Wii's functionality may offer some innovative gameplay that a Dreamcast sequel could not.

Also, in retrospect, in addition to the looming shadow of PS2, another contributing factor to the Dreamcast's demise was Sega's terrible marketing. It's possible that if NiGHTS were released on the Dreamcast, it would get lost in the chaff so to speak. NiGHTS would once again be relegated to being the overlooked swan song of another dying Sega console. At least on the Wii, people are viewing it as a comeback.

Now we just need to hope the sequel doesn't dissapoint on a massive ****ing level. I'd hate to see this series come down with "Devil May Cry 2 Syndrome".

Wii. I just think on the Dreamcast, they might have tried to... overdo it. And they would have failed. Plus, since the DC didn't do so well, less people would have bought it, Sega might have thought it was no longer viable and dropped it forever... for the wrong reasons.

Dreamcast. If they made a great game an advertised it like they should have at that time Sega would make its own systems still and Sony and Microsoft would be driven out of the video game industry by the competition. We would also have many sequels by now.

I love my Dreamcast to pieces, but I think Wii is the better console for this game. As said before, it's opening up NiGHTS to a wider audience. You'd be amazed how many people I know either never owned a Dreamcast, doesn't know what it is, or just laugh at you when you told them you have one.

what are you talking about? Sequels added fun to the games up until Sega stopped making consoles, and I enjoyed Shadow the hedgehog, Sonic rush, Sonic and the Secret rings, and Sonic Riders. Stuff between those two eras though...

I can't help feeling that if there was a NiGHTS game earlier, Sega might've beaten Nintendo to accelerometer and pointer functions. After all, it beat Nintendo to discs, analog controllers, and flying fluid and free in real-time 3-d.
Got that last part off a commercial. It's very accurate.

I vote wii, because I have one, but also because quite simply, this game will reach a MUCH wider potential audience than if ity was on Dreamcast. I loved the idea of that system and what it offered, even if I didnt have one, but the way the Wii is selling, for the sake of this game its getting the maximum amount of exposure possible on any next-gen console (XBOX360 would ignore it like they ignored Viva Pinata) on the wii, which seems tailor built vfor this sort of game and for most Sega games. I honestly would not want to see this game on any other system before coming to wii first (afterwards is fine).

If the Dreamcast was still in direct compititon with the Wii I would say DreamCast all the way, Sega Consoles are what I live for!

But how things have turned out, The DC is dead (RIP) and the Wii is very popular.. So Wii is the best choice.

I'm going to have to say Wii. A few reasons here: there is potential for a greater audiovisual presentation, it will reach a greater audience, and it has the potential to control wonderfully. NiGHTS was a mixed package. Sure, the art direction and color choice was very pleasing, the soundtrack was killer, and NiGHTS was charming, but NiGHTS is simply the most controllable character in any video game I've ever played, moreso than even Mario. The fluidity, grace, and speed offered when flying was incredible. Since the Dreamcast controller was very similar to the updated Saturn controller, there wouldn't have been much room for making the experience of flight any more awesome. However, a gesture-based control system, where the Wii Remote serves as a conductor's rod, has the potential to make a great experience that much greater. The Wii Remote is a very new device though, and it appears it's hit or miss with developers. I just hope that Sonic Team can pull it off.

Oh, and there are a couple more really cool features with the Wii. The forecast channel is the biggest one, since Sonic Team is using that to influence the weather in-game. Perhaps they'll use the system clock for determining seasons, or special days (a la Christmas NiGHTS). There's so much potential.

NiGHTS on the wii would certainly make you feel like you are in the dream itself because of the motion control.
