I'd just like to add that chat client Pidgin can also connect to irc chats.
I'm not really good with irc commands either, but the one one command I can recall is:
/nick newnickname
Replace newnickname with whatever you want.

The client is free to use and all you have to do is type in your nickname once you're there.

Another chat client is the Firefox addon Chatzilla.
Once it's installed go to Tools > Chatzilla
Once the new window is up, go to Chatzilla > Preferences
Pick out your nickname and whatnot then input the following commands (if you can find a faster way then go for it):
/server irc.esper.net (or /server irc.esper.net 5555)
/join #NiD
Alternatively, instead of "/join #NiD" you can go to IRC > Join channel... or use Ctrl + J. A list of the available chatrooms will pop up and you can either search manually or use the search bar to find #NiD.

HydraIRC is a new one that popped up on my scanners. Windows only.
