A number of people have asked for impressions of the game, so I thought I'd start a topic for anyone with the game to report back/give a mini review

********Possible Spoilers********

Well I've only had one complete run of the game (getting As first time of course :P) But it plays pretty much exactly as the original. Multiple dreamies are in (and easier as the air brake happens less often and you can use all four shoulder buttons), ABPs work very differently though. Theres a proper Widescreen mode also. The dpad doesnt help for SM stunts.

The game does look great (esp with RGB cable - just wow). Not up to current gen PS2 games (Sonic Riders 2 for example) but still amazing to see for an old school Nights player like me... The boss battles look great (esp Wizeman!) and Twin Seeds probably seems the most drastically improved dream.

The wierdest thing is having the draw in line and horizons alot farther reaching. Its a bit disconcerting to actually be able to see the chips and ribbons from so far off lol

The original Saturn is very faithful from what I've seen (only played SV so far)

Things I've Discovered/unlocked as far

Xmas Nights remade (get all As?)
Nightopian Status (complete Xmas Nights with both - you'll find it in options)
'Winter Nights' Start screen (complete Xmas Nights?)
Elliot and Claris in tracksuits (complete Xmas Nighst with both?)
The last row in Gallery (complete Xmas Nights? includes Xmas Nights intro storyboard!)
REALA IS IN!! (Set internal clock to April 1st then play Spring Valley in ps2 mode - thats the only dream he is. Also (spoiler)...
Spoiler

Exit option in pause (was just in original Xmas Nights)
The clock features of Xmas nights that change the start screen work.

Negative Stuff/Things missing/Different at the moment -

No 2 player
Xmas Nights ripped to pieces (no original, no presents, no karoke, no music mood adjuster)
PS2 pad feels 'different' (need to play test it more though)
Xmas nights intro ('The city is covered in lights...' intro) is in Japanese - fun to hear though!
Gillwing paraloop technique seems tighter (I've actually not done it yet - got a 19 link max, his head doesnt seem to take hit from the paraloop any more)
Gulpos fish seem harder to grab onto
No Link attack, Time Attack or Sonic into Dreams...
No blue-out above Twin Seeds Tower.
Links are harder overall

Will keep updating this post with new stuff

Overall, worth it for a Nights fan (especially at the price - www.play-asia.com). I think unless some exploit is found, I might allow scores from the game in the main tables at sa.net

Thanks GSK! That's some great information. It'll be interesting to see if all of our old tricks still work!

Hopefully you get the Gillwing paraloop technique to work, because that is all I ever used on the saturn.

Sounds like multiple dreamies are easier too, which is nice, but I am assuming they got rid of the glitch, right??

I have seen one video on youtube and the graphics do seem nicely updated. EDIT: here's a better video of someone who can play.

I can't wait to try this out myself but it might be a while since my current ps2 is incompatible.

Buh...wait, don't you need to mod an American PS2 to be able to play Japanese PS2 games?

(Copied from my original post the other day in here: http://www.nightsint...amp;#entry41905 )

Well, I spent a couple of hours on it last night. I found out a few things about it:

You need to finish NiD to unlock Christmas NiGHTS.

There is no presents section on it, the christmas present gallery pictures are in with the normal picture gallery. I unlocked the nightopian collection by playing it through again, so I'm assuming that the other presents like Sonic etc need to be unlocked this way (not definite about that though)

Christmas NiGHTS is (as far as I can see) only playable in the new polished graphics mode and not the SegaSaturn mode.

Also, when you complete the levels in the Brand new mode, you also unlock them in SegaSaturn mode so you don't need to do it twice.

I haven't had chance to play it since, so I haven't got anything extra to add to this yet :P

Murasaki Doku, you either need a JPN PS2, or a 'modded' US/PAL PS2, either indenpence exploit or a mod chip or using a swap disc.

Charlie, no multiple dreamies are in! It surprised me to be honest. Havent tried them in Xmas Nights yet (though they are definitely out on the original xmas)

Amy, I'm so sorry, i didnt realise there was already a thread about this :P Mods, if you want to delete/combine?

lol

anyway, I'm hoping to spend some more time on it this weekend. Maybe multiple completes will open more stuff? Playing each dream to a certain number (as the game does keep track of it when you beat the boss), getting certain scores, playing with the ps2 internal clock, debug code.

I'm still holding out on a four player split screen battle mode!! :P

Do you know where or how I could get a PAL PS2 modded? I have a friend who has an extra PS2 and absolutely loves to be an enabler of my NiGHTS obsession, even though he's not a fan--he's only really into RPGs.

Cant help you there I'm afraid, I went the software mod way. I've heard good things about the Toxic OS mod. Maybe google that, or ps2 mod?

Check out this link for what I did.

Wait a minute...

(awkward moment)

...PAL is for Europe, and NTSC is Japan AND USA? I've always been confused by that format thing...

So if I have an NTSC PS2, and since Japan apparently is NTSC, do I really need to mod the PS2 at all?

I'm so confused...

You are right that they are both NTSC, but a US console cannot play Japanese games without doing one of the software or hardware mods that gsk mentioned.

:D Wow, I can't believe they took them out. So what happens, can you only get 1 dreamy worth 2000 points and that's it? Or do the points go from 900 to 1000 to 1100 and so on?

Could you spoilertag the surprise? I might not get this game, seeing as I don't have a PS2.

Hearing all this good stuff I might try importing it when schools out, I haven't used my PS2 to play games since FFXII. Now it's just a DVD player.

And that can help play import games? It keeps talking about copied games.

New stuff -

Links are harder overall - Mystic Forest mare 1 infinite is a real bugger...

The clock features of Xmas nights that change the start screen work.

Tamika, the hard drive would let you copy any of your ps2 games, region free, so you can play any of them.

What do you think makes the links harder? Is it the controls, the positioning of the chips/rings, or the time between links has been reduced??

my personal expressions, the game is alot better. better graphics now they dont look like chibi's, comes with Christmas nights. comes with the old sega saturn version and all its glory. AND THERE IS PRETTY MUCH NOTHING JAP ABOUT THIS GAME. menu's english, levels english. music, english. the only thing jap in it is the hints, auto saving, and the dubbing you hear as you start christmas NiGHTS.

I'd have to agree that the game is an improvement, especially the updated graphics and the inclusion of xmas NiGHTS, but I do have some gripes with the actual mechanics of NiGHTS flight.

Somehow NiGHTS seems slightly slower in this version so you aren't able to get the same links or number of laps that you could in the original Saturn version. So for the die hard scoreattack fans like myself I can't really play this game with the same feel that the Saturn version had.

I know I'm in the minority when it comes to playing for high scores, so 99% of the people that play NiGHTS wouldn't even notice the difference, which is why I'd have to say that this version is still a great improvement over the original.

Btw, I am still trying to do a more in-depth comparison of the PS2 and Saturn versions for the site, it's just going a little slower than I would like.
