I like it.

But the only reason I even LOOKED at it in the first place was because of TRiPPY. Years ago, I had seen her fabulous artwork on DeviantART and was fascinated even though I wasn't a fan. Besides that, I only knew that NiGHTS existed was through cameos he had in several Sonic games.

So when I saw NiGHTS on the front cover of Nintendo Power, the first thing I remembered was TRiPPY and her artwork...though it had been so long ago that I had forgotten her deviantART name, it was kind of "that lady that was crazy about this character and drew badass fanart".

But anyway, it's a lot better than what people are giving it credit for. See, I'd been following the Sonic franchise since Sonic Adventure 2, JUST in time to experience the downfall--poor quality, the firing of Ryan Drummond and the hiring of the horrible Jason Griffith, Shadow the Hedgehog....uuuughhh. So I played the game, keeping in mind that it came from the same people who were pulling Sonic down the crapper. In other words, I came into the game expecting it to suck. But it didn't. It was a lot better, and the voice acting was a HELL of a lot better than in the Sonic games. Sure, it's not perfect, but if you buy any game expecting it to be perfect, you're doomed to hate it in the end.

Very much agreed 'ere. I may not 'ave known about this place a couple years ago, or even last year. But I do know a good game when I see it. Nintendo Power gave it a 9.0 out if 10 ignore all the jaded 'aters and some may bemoan the fact that the game feels like it's predesscer or summat like that. The voice actin' is way better than the Sonic games that I own :(. You know every game has it's flaws, like humans we're not perfect.

I seriously thought NP was giving it too much praise. It's not like online game reviewers want to hate JoD, they want to like it because it's the first real sequal to Nights in over a decade. Yet all the pacing issues and quality control keep them from doing that.

The voice acting in JoD is slightly better then recent Sonic games, but I still think it's awful.

oh for the love of god, you guys finally get a sequel thats at the very least a technologically superior game and all you do is complain. It is usually great to constructively criticize things except when the criticism isn't about the bad guys finger nails (because that was the first thing I looked at) or some equally stupid thing. Ultimately I could rant all day but you got your sequel now play it with tears in your eyes wondering why that link ring wasn't over there instead. And maybe, just maybe if there is a third game you will go into it with lower expectations just like I did because the first game wasn't that great anyway.

(drunk right now to be edited when I'm sober and where's that second earthquake we were promised it's 10 mins late XD).

drunk right now

Way to be. XD

Anyway I was in a GameStop nearby and was poking around the Wii section, and to my horror there were 2 copies of NiGHTS used on the shelf. They were still full-used-price, $44.99, so I wasn't too shocked, until I learned that they had 5 more used copies than they had room for on the shelf and just 1 new one left...

I'd also like to direct your attention to VGChartz: http://vgchartz.com/...me.php?id=12642

That paltry number represents US and Japan reported sales to date. Unless the European fanbase is far larger than anyone anticipated (and by that, I mean like everyone with a Wii in Europe buys 2 copies a piece), we're talking a total worldwide flop. I know these numbers aren't official but they're all we have to go by. But if you have a subscription to the NPD sales reports, start typing.

I don't even know what to say...

It's cool man. You got your opinions everyone else has got theres. Some like it some don't and some like it but feel it fell short. I'm of the last category. It's not an awful game and I'm happy with it. All I'm saying is that it doesn't feel as awesome as the first. That's all. And replying to the pink fingernail thing it's not THAT huge of a deal it's just I can't imagine how someone is supposed to be intimidating with a fingernail color that is highly associated with females while the voice is sounding like a 29 year old man. But yeah anyway it's like I said you got your opinions others will have theres.

So wait.. USA sales are still higher than Japan, right? Is that to be expected, or are Sega really in fact that idiotic for not bringing all the merchandise to our shores? This proves it..

Yeah and even more so they say Japan had higher demand for anything NiGHTS yet the remake isn't even doing so well. SEGA is weird I guess. Oh well. I'll just have fun with the new game and forget about anything else.

Next time if you're aware enough to mention that you're posting while drunk and might be being rude, try to be aware enough to not post, thanks.

Though I can't say I completely disagree with Vin here- people are too busy being dramatic over minor things to really enjoy playing the game. A lot of the time, sequels are nowhere near as good as originals in anything- books, movies, video games and all that jazz, but that doesn't mean that you have to think of it as bad. People like the game and people don't. But if you enjoy it or dislike it, let it be for your own reasons and don't get all upset over something as silly as the sales or that other people don't like it.

The reason that the game did not do well is simply the fact that there was minimal advertising for the game (though better than most games) and the fact that there were a lot of reviews that panned the game (which I somewhat agree with) and that tends to scare away a bunch of prospective buyers, and the fact that no one outside of the video game epicentre knows that a game called NiGHTS even exists. Plus the fact that Sega did not really give the game that much attention in terms of development time. The fact that the game was on a system that only sold about 10 million units and has been long-forgotten by many did not help either. Also, it is a very unconventional game.

None of the things in the above paragraph take away from the quality of the game in general. Some games are just not destined to sell well. Take one look at the tragedies that are No More Heroes and Zack and Wiki if you want further proof. And those games were reviewed more positively, and one was given numerous awards for quality! Marketability sells games, not quality.

Well, first off, this is me speaking as someone who does love the game.

I know for a fact that a lot of people at my school are aware of the game. I don't know, but I rarely see video game adverts full stop myself so while I agree it was under-advertised, I don't think it's the only thing. I actually think the cover might put some people off- it's a pretty cover, sure, but the colours and slightly plasticy feel... it makes me think of a young kids' game, and I think if people aren't aware of what the game is it's going to put them off. But, on the other hand, Woolworths only just took the game off the shelf here, it's still in Blockbusters really prominantly; and these are small versions of the shops, so games cycle through really fast. (They don't have any returned/second hand copies either, which I'm trying to work out if it's good or bad because it cost me more XD;;; ) There are a few factors, I suppose...

I don't think people were expecting the game to sell as well as a big-name game anyway, or at least I wasn't... I've always thought it'd be a game that made them a profit, not like Sonic where it's purpose is to get into the charts and such. NiGHTS shouldn't be compared to Mario or Sonic- it's just not a big thing outside the gamers commuity, and not really even within it. So long as Sega make some money, I'll count it as a success myself.

You're absolutely right. I sometimes keep thinking of NiGHTS as a huge game in the gaming community because of this forum and my personal love for it but it's not as big as I keep thinking. I didn't hear anything about it on the web in any other forum site but this one and not until the sequel was talked about then did I see it start to circulate attention but only a little.

Guy #1: what about that NiGHTS thing?
Guy #2: what, that sissy thing? nah, too childish *turns around to look at 360 games*

I guess different folks have differnt strokes. Thats what happens when you play Halo too much (no offense to the game)

I made the mistake of trying to explain the game to one kid's father. It horrified him even more. -__-; People are so closed minded these days. I actually had one person buy it three days ago without any gay comments or someone going 'don't you want racing or something?' while looking at the game like it's gay porn. It got to the point that.. an actual gay guy.. thought the game looked sissy ;-; and wouldn't get it.

You aren't talking about the Wii, are you? It has not been long forgotten, unless we are talking about the Saturn...

Yet I will bring up one very strong point: we Nintendo gamers seem to have a knack for buying poorly made Sega games. IE Shadow The Hedgehog. I guess my fanbase makes some bad errors in judgement. ^.^;

Partly from bad decisions on Sega's part (rushing it for Christmas 2007), but probably it has a lot to do with misconceptions about the game or a biased/twisted viewpoint. Back in January, I told my best friend about the new videogame I'd discovered that I had decided I must absolutely play. You know what she said? My best friend? "I'm sorry. It has no strategy and it's repetitive. All you do is go around collecting orbs." That as one of the times when I was most angry with her. "Collecting orbs," the only thing you do? Total nonsense. The reviews had to do with that, and her brother's and a guy friend's prejudice against the game. It took me a while to convince her otherwise. Even got her to play the game. She liked it...except for Memory Forest.

It's the same thing with the old NiD comics. They stopped selling 'em because they weren't necessarily 'popular' and they 'weren't making enough money'. To see that JoD is coming down to this, possibly to the extent of not being sold anymore is depressing...

Not a lot of people want the game because, well, it's not that great. It's very mediocre.

And the dialog and cutscenes are horrible and hamfisted.

I understand most everyone on this site is a NiGHTS fan (and if you aren't, wtf are you doing here), but let's be honest. Did you expect it to sell like hot cakes?

I remember seeing one commercial for JoD. One. And I almost missed it because I was flipping around the channels, thinking about watching a DVD when suddenly BAM there's NiGHTS on the screen. The first thought that popped into my head was "Omgwhut?! There's a new NiGHTS?!" which sent me scrambling to the internet. (Which in turn led me to this site, but I digress.)

The thing to remember about NiD, I think, is that it's a cult classic. Very cult. So it will always appeal to a small audience.

As for the reception for JoD...it reminds me of the hubbub surrounding Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2. Everyone thought it was going to be even better than the first KotOR, with a darker, more involved storyline and more ways to interact with the characters. Instead, the game was so rushed that the majority of the plotlines were cut in order to get the game out there. And sure, it was a great game, but the ending murdered any enthusiasm and it was painfully obvious throughout the game that the finished product was only a shadow of what it could be. Not only was the cut content of the game a major thorn in its side, but the expectations of the fans was astronomical to begin with. (pun not intended) JoD suffered from similar problems. Rushing to get the game out combined with fans' expectations crippled it.

The one and ONLY time I EVER saw an ad for NiGHTS was when I was really young, it was advertised on the inside cover of an Archie comic. But I practically fell in love the moment I saw NiGHTS. Unfortunately, my family was a Nintendo family and nothing more... for years and years I never forgot about that jester-like character I saw in the comic and wanted so badly to learn more about them.

Completely by chance I found the opening for NiGHTS Into Dreams on YouTube a month or two ago and was all like, "THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN MISSING?! AAAAGH, DAMN YOU SUPER MARIO!!!"... seriously XD;; Browsing around I found something called NiGHTS 2 and was excited, but my hopes were smashed almost immediately when I discovered it was a fake. I got all depressed... until a moment later when I found the opening to Journey Of Dreams. I swear I could have died happy right then and there, especially when I saw it for the Wii. I have never in my life owned anything Sega-related, I've yet to even try a Sonic game! So knowing this was coming out for a system close to home was the best thing ever.

I admit, I'm a pirate myself when it comes to music and software. But when people mess with NiGHTS, it's like a huge part of me dies on the inside. I have never felt this way about anything before in my life, not about any music or games or programs. I had very little care and sympathy because of how much most things cost and how I saw big companies as greedy and only out for a profit, so I pirated it. But to know that one of the most important things to me is being treated this way is... awful. I dunno how else to explain it. NiGHTS is definitely gonna be on the top of my list until I can afford to buy it... even Smash Bros. pales in comparison for me.

The even sadder part is, never have I ever seen an ad for it on TV, magazines, posters, anything. I can't even remember seeing it on sale anywhere, so the day I find it will be a happy day indeed.

I personally liked the game somewhat.. hahaha.
I also think some people around here like it about the same, since someone stole the box to mine. I got a big discount since it was the only copy left and had no box with it.

A friend of mine works at Gamestop, and has only had like.. one return of the game so far.
[Which rocks because i got a box now. XD;]

A lot of people think it's too girly or too homoerotic, or gay-ish or whatever and don't seem to want it. That's what I hear anyway from people I know. *shrug*

on a positive note guys, if it did in fact sell 200k like vgchartz is claiming then it really isnt that bad of a flop. This game had a miniscule budget and was rushed through a 1 year development cycle. I think Sega may actually have made break even or perhaps even a small bit of profit off this game. It wasnt vert technically impressive, nor was the cutscene and CGi work all that expensive to produce considfering how much more those features have advanced. This game isnt a blockbuster hit but I do think it is a modest success given the quality of the game, its lack of advertising, and lack of hype outside of the NiGHTS fanbase. Its true it would have been awesome to make half am illion or a million sales, but consider also the many dozens of RPgs and hardcore niche titles that dont even make it to 200k. No More Heroes for example sold almost 200k and MMV threw a celebration party.

The only commercial games that pull massive profits (massive enough to be considered successful) are over-marketed, established series that have gigantic budgets, like Kingdom Hearts, Gears of War, and Grand Theft Auto. JoD looks like it was fairly low budget (the nextgen Sonic production values were most probably higher), so yeah, 200k sales probably did make 'em break even.
Keep in mind that one of my favourite games, God Hand, only sold 70k copies worldwide (If this site is true - thanks for the link though).

..JoD's still $70 here though. If it goes down to $50, I might consider buying it (I hate being poor :< ).. <_<

Please don't call our members less worthy fans just because they have dislikes about JoD. JoD wasn't exactly a big hit and it does have many issues. This doesn't make anyone less of a fan. I think what makes someone "less of a fan", if there is such a thing, is somebody that pretends to enjoy something just because the rest of their fandom does. Everyone here is just being honest. I prefer NiD myself.

Please keep the rules in mind, and please be courteous and do not insult the integrity of the other members here, simply because you do not agree.

Don't worry, I don't think you were lashing out at the members or anything, but its easy to misunderstand things such as "what kind of fans are you". Again, its no problem, just be mindful that some people may not know thats a joke. This is a fandom and is full of rabid NiGHTS-loving folks. XD
