#100270 Sales Figures

Posted by Draikin on 05 December 2012 - 07:58 PM in NiGHTS chit-chat

Interestingly the game seems to be doing well on the XBLA charts in Japan, where it's outselling Sonic Adventure 2. That's something, even though the audience is very limited there. On the US sales charts, the game entered the top 90 again so there's some recovery there. Also interesting is that Sega has 10 games in the top 90 XBLA US daily sales chart at the moment, so they're doing quite well there overall.

#100224 Nights Theme and Avatar items on X-box Live

I'd probably buy the avatar pets, but I doubt I'd get the costumes.

#100222 New patch released!

Posted by Draikin on 24 November 2012 - 10:54 PM in NiGHTS chit-chat

I now wish every reviewer would review Nights again post-patch. Now the controls are sorted the first time impact of Nights' speed and gracefulness is restored and the greatness of the original is retained. I would not have thought as much of Nights had I played it for the first time with stiff controls..

Sega should make a post on their blog about the patch to bring it to people's attention. They might as well use that as a reason to bring the game in the news again.

#100208 New patch released!

Posted by Draikin on 23 November 2012 - 09:14 PM in NiGHTS chit-chat

Thanks for the confirmation TRiPPY. That's actually good news, since that means the PS3 version will most likely also get the same changes to the speed as well. I thought the PS3 controller was at fault but since it hasn't been patched yet, the game will probably end up controlling just as well as on XBox360 when they do release the patch. I think this is more than we could have hoped for. My thanks to you and DiGGi for helping us get this patch!

#100204 New patch released!

Posted by Draikin on 23 November 2012 - 07:05 PM in NiGHTS chit-chat

I just found the PS3 video I recorded earlier, and it really does show the same problem with NiGHTS moving in a square when trying to loop. It wasn't quite as bad but still very noticeable. So I'm not sure what's going on, because when I played the PS3 version yesterday NiGHTS seemed to move as well as on the patched XBox360 version. I don't know if it's possible the game got a stealth update. I'll also look into trying that trying that 26 link.

#100202 New patch released!

Posted by Draikin on 23 November 2012 - 06:14 PM in NiGHTS chit-chat

Maybe because I downloaded today about 6pm, it may be fixed from the get go because it seems to play smooth as I remember and not like the comparison version(though they used xbla version)Can anyone confirm its updated.

I didn't spend a lot of time testing the PS3 version. At first I thought it had the same problem, but after playing it again recently it does seem like the controls there were already analog from the start (even though I honestly thought they were worse before, but the game version is still at 1.00). I do think the PS3 controller is just not very well suited for the game compared to the XBox360 controller. I'd basically need to use some kind of converter to really test if both versions are really the same. The question I do have though is whether or not NiGHTS moves as fast on the PS3 version as on the newly patched XBox360 version. That I'm not so sure about. Do any of the experts here know an easy way to test this?

#100183 New patch released!

Posted by Draikin on 22 November 2012 - 12:37 AM in NiGHTS chit-chat

I just played the game on the PS3 and I didn't notice a difference. I'm going to re-download the game since I assume it didn't automatically detect the patch and updated the game with it. If what you say is true, Sega has my undying love.

I just tried but I didn't get an update for the PS3. The problem wasn't as pronounced on the PS3 version from what I could tell either, although my time playing that version was limited. I'd appreciate it if someone could confirm my initial impressions of the patched XBox360 version as I'm starting to doubt myself here (although comparing the video I just made now and the one before the patch, the difference really seems to be there).

#100179 New patch released!

Posted by Draikin on 21 November 2012 - 10:35 PM in NiGHTS chit-chat

As charlie already hinted at, Sega actually released a new patch for the XBox360 version of the game today! I'm not sure if it's been released for PS3 as well, I still have to check that. I've just tried the controls a bit, and I'm definitely noticing a difference. My first impressions are that the controls now feel similar to the PS2 Sega Ages game, which basically means they're, indeed, fixed.

I'm not sure if there are other changes yet. I got the impression that NiGHTS seems to move faster than before, although that could just be the snappier controls making it seem that way. I'll leave the more detailed analysis to the experts here :) I'll also make a new video showing the comparison between the old and new version. Also, thanks to all the people that contacted Sega about the control problems, and of course Sega themselves for listening to the fans!

lol don't be so dramatic dude, it's coming and I know this because DiGi's working on it and I know the actual release date. An announcement will happen soon I promise.

That's good to hear! With SA2 being announced for PC and no mention of NiGHTS I was getting a tad worried as well.

Here's a sales analysis of Gamasutra which basically confirms RedTail's findings:

#100168 Anonymous Tip - Patch is Coming

Posted by Draikin on 19 November 2012 - 11:13 AM in NiGHTS chit-chat

Given the low sales of the game I wasn't expecting a patch at this point. This is unexpected but very good news. Hopefully it can helps the sales recover a bit. Releasing a patch can basically get the game to appear in the news again, which is essentially "free" publicity. Thanks for the info, Charlie!

#100125 Sales Figures

Posted by Draikin on 06 November 2012 - 09:54 PM in NiGHTS chit-chat

Well 2,000 more copies and we'll be caught up to the petition numbers... so that's not too bad I guess. :|

There's also the PSN version so it might have reached about 10,000 copies. The problem is that this places the game far behind Jet Set Radio HD and Virtua Fighter 5: FS, let alone Sonic Adventure 2... I'm not sure how much it needs to sell to be profitable, but I'm guessing it'll have to be more. I hope this doesn't make Sega change their mind about releasing the PC version.

#100058 Still no PC release date?

Posted by Draikin on 22 October 2012 - 06:30 PM in NiGHTS chit-chat

I'm all for NiGHTS appearing on multiple platforms as that can only contribute to growing the fanbase. As for the PC version, I'd be very disappointed if they actually released the game with the exact same control problems, especially after we contacted Sega's support. I don't care if they have to delay the game to fix it, we wouldn't know about the delay anyway given the lack of release date.

SEGA really, really dropped the ball by not including proper instructions. Something as simple as a five minute tutorial video would've helped new players immensely and prevented people from writing the game off like this...

Well to be fair, the ingame manual does explain everything that a new player needs to know. The "reviewers" in question actually showed the manual but didn't bother to read it, since otherwise they couldn't bash the game as easily. I don't see what the point is behind the video, since it's just a waste of time for both the people that made it and the viewers.

#100047 Sales Figures

Posted by Draikin on 20 October 2012 - 04:11 PM in NiGHTS chit-chat

In comparison, Jet Set Radio HD sold 10,000 copies in its first week and another 10,000 copies in its second week. It's indeed a sharp decline after an already relatively weak start. I think it shows that NiGHTS failed to reach a new audience, and judging from the reviews this has a lot to do with the game simply being too difficult to understand. Nowadays gamers expect games that are easy to get into and offer immediate rewards. NiGHTS does exactly the opposite, and while I think it makes sense that the game throws you into a dream world where you don't really know what to do, it's clearly being punished for it. The game desperately needs a tutorial area. That combined with the fact that it's not the definitive version of NiGHTS due to the controls issues translates into the poor sales that we're seeing now.

It's disheartening. I don't know how much the game needs to sell for it to be profitable, but this was just a port. A genuine sequel, even using the same engine, would cost considerable more than that. I think the lesson Sega and the fans learned with this release is that:

a) if you're going to rerelease a game like NiGHTS, you need to make sure the controls work or you ruin fan enthusiasm and the game's replayability.
B) NiGHTS is a niche game. Most of the time people either love it or hate it. Sega should release DLC for this game for the simple reason that, while few people buy the game, most of those are often willing to invest more money into it. I'm not saying they should have sold Christmas NiGHTS separately for example, I'm very much against that. But actual new content like additional costumes would be a good addition. I think what Sega did with VF 5 recently wasn't a bad idea, it just needs to be balanced.

I don't know if the fans can do anything to give the game a boost at this point. If Sega would fix the controls, maybe they could use that as a sort of a relaunch. But that's of course a big if.

#100040 Sales Figures

Posted by Draikin on 18 October 2012 - 07:09 PM in NiGHTS chit-chat

It's going to be difficult to find any actual numbers, but the game has dropped below Jet Set Radio in daily XBLA sales so that's not exactly a good sign. Unlike Sonic Adventure 2, the game doesn't seem to have much staying power in the charts. I'm not sure how much of that is caused by the control issues.

#100022 So who's buying the game on multiple platforms?

Posted by Draikin on 13 October 2012 - 08:41 PM in NiGHTS chit-chat

Could someone who owns both the XBox360 and PS3 version of the games compare the brightness of the two versions? I'm noticing what I believe is a problem with the XBox360 output settings of the game, and as a result of that the game looks darker than the PS3 version (at least that's how it would look to most people, even thought it's not actually related to brightness settings). It's a non-issue really, but I'd still like to confirm whether or not this is actually the case.

Joystiq
"Maybe I'm a sap (okay, I probably am), but I think everyone should play Nights into Dreams at least once."
http://www.joystiq.c...ts-into-dreams/

NOW Gamer (9,6/10)
"Sega’s game remains an utterly unique experience, which has benefited greatly from its high-definition update. It’s further proof that when it comes to updating past classics no one is currently doing it better than Sega."
http://www.nowgamer....ams_review.html

The Utah Statesman (B+)
"NiGHTS Into Dreams… remains an extremely simple and playable, albeit not necessarily accessible experience. For those who can get past its slightly dated exterior and weird story and don’t mind replaying stages multiple times, this surreal and fun little romp through a luminous dream world filled with quirky characters, large locations, and gargantuan dragons that want to eat you shouldn’t be missed."
http://www.usustates...reams-1.2777764

Games radar (3,5/5)
"Nights into Dreams HD is a great entry point for gamers who’ve read about the series over the years, but might be curious what all the fuss is about. In some regards, it comes off as a tad simplistic, but it’s easy to see where the qualities of the game lie, and why it gained such a cult following over the sixteen years. If you’ve never experienced this Sega classic, it’s a fun and imaginative romp that’s worth checking out."
http://www.gamesrada...eams-hd-review/

Gamespot (7.0/10)
"Nights Into Dreams is short and sometimes frustrating, but that doesn't prevent it from being magical."
http://www.gamespot....review-6397704/

EGM (8.0/10)
"The concepts and challenges of NiGHTS into Dreams HD make it a game that not everybody will be able to appreciate—but for those that do, this is a great way to once again experience one of Sega’s most curious yet creative moments in game development."
http://www.egmnow.co...into-dreams-hd/

Gamestyle (8/10)
"If SEGA can continue to produce re-releases of this quality, then they are on to a winner. NiGHTS is a dream, it plays as you remember and thanks to the HD enhancement, it invokes your best memories of the original. It is complete fan service, possibly not one for newcomers, but certainly for those who enjoyed the experience in 1996."
http://gamestyle.com...ts-into-dreams/

LeadExample (7/10)
"So what is the main conclusion?, many may want to try this out as it’s a fast paced race against time and points, where as others may want to try before they buy. For the price the game offers quite a lot."
http://leadexample.n...o-dreams-review

Game Reactor (8/10)
"Nights stands the test of time and even now, sixteen years later, is still as original and unique as it was on its first release. For the right type of gamer, this is definitely worth picking up."
http://www.gamereact...s: Into Dreams/

XBLA Ratings
"The atmosphere of NiGHTS is unlike that of any game I have played. It is so light-hearted and fun that it is easy to see why, even after so many years of its debut that it is wanted back. I suggest that everyone buys this game if you want some good, clean hearted fun and experience one of the best games of past generations."
http://xblaratings.c...o-dreams-review

Blistered Thumbs
"Fans of the original should pick this HD version up and take to the friendly skies once again, but newcomers can probably give it a pass unless they’re just in it for the history lesson."
http://www.blistered...eams-hd-review/

Gamesbeat (60/100)
"As a modern adult with a job and children of my own (whom I couldn’t get to even play through more than one nightmare, even with bribes), Nights into Dreams HD isn’t for me. Whether it’s worth the $10 admission price will more be up to your individual taste — and perhaps an interest in reliving your youth — than anything else."
http://venturebeat.c...stalgia-review/

All about the games
"When it clicks, and it will click, it's an experience that will leave you grinning from ear to ear. Bravo Sega, these HD upgrades are opening the doors back up on a forgotten age of gaming, the one were everything was full of fun, blue skies and chasing high scores. Give it a try if you haven't already, and if you have then I suspect you already bought it as soon as it hit the store."
http://www.allaboutt...rticle_id=12529

Defunct Games(B-)
"NiGHTS into Dreams is not answer to Sega's Super Mario 64; it's not a game that will change the way you look at video games. It's an interesting take on a platformer with a truly unique sense of style. The price is right, even if some of the design decisions seem archaic by today's standards. Whatever you do, don't sleep through NiGHTS into Dreams."
http://www.defunctga...hts-into-dreams

Gamezone (8/10)
"I enjoyed NiGHTS Into Dreams HD more than Sonic Adventure 2, because, as a whole, it's way more accessible, and packed with more than enough extras, particularly Christmas NiGHTS."

Push Square (9/10)
"NiGHTS is an important game for many reasons. Perhaps the most prevalent is that it shows creative thinking and unique ideas can create a game that is not only well-loved at its release, but also stands the test of time for future generations to enjoy."

#100020 List all reviews you find in here

Posted by Draikin on 13 October 2012 - 04:45 PM in NiGHTS chit-chat

I was actually compiling a list of reviews I found, here's what I got up until now:

1Up (B-)
"If you've never played it, you should; and if you have, another flight through Nightopia won't hurt."
http://www.1up.com/r...-real-inception

The Escapist (4,5/5)
"NiGHTS into Dreams is a meaningful game wrapped in a package of challenging yet thoroughly enjoyable gameplay."
http://www.escapistm...o-Dreams-Review

TSSZ Beyond Blue (2,5/5)
"Everything you do in a game hinges on the controls working as intended, and the controls in NiGHTS HD just do not feel like they should. It may not be so bad as to ruin the game, but it’s a big enough issue that I don’t feel wholly comfortable recommending this version of NiGHTS – especially to veterans looking to replace their old Sega Saturn versions. Try the demo first and proceed with caution."
http://www.tssznews....ox-live-arcade/

New Gamer nation (7,5/10)
"It would be wise to consider adding this game to your library."
http://www.newgamern...into-dreams-hd/

Official XBox Magazine Online (8/10)
"NiGHTS is like the dreams it’s based on: it’s easy to dismiss as silly nonsense, but when you dig deeper into it, you’ll find something beautiful and revelatory."
http://www.oxmonline...reams-hd-review

PSN Fans (Score: "Buy it")
http://www.psnfans.c...w-psn-8729.html
"SEGA has given this game the proper porting treatment it deserves, and hopefully gamers unfamiliar with NiGHTS will give him a twirl, and gamers familiar with the character will cherish him all over again sixteen years later."

Games Asylum
"Learning the level layouts like the back of your hand in order to top the leaderboards takes an awfully long time, and if you’re anything like us you’ll love every second of it."
http://www.gamesasyl...box-360-review/

God is a Geek (8/10)
http://www.godisagee...-dreams-review/ ->
"NiGHTS into DREAMS… may not have sold many Saturn consoles sixteen years ago, but is a beautiful piece of gaming history, that may look like a mid 90s SEGA release, but plays like very little that has been released since."

Stick twiddlers (3/5)
"It’s not a perfect game by any means, games today are more refined and we don’t easily accept faults like we used to, but with NiGHTS we can see past those faults and see how much fun it is to fly."
http://sticktwiddler...eams-hd-review/

360 Gamer (8/10)
"Despite it's age, NiGHTS into dreams remains one of the most insane and addictive titles any gamer could hope for. Filled with brilliant colours, great sounds and huge levels (for the 90’s at least) you really couldn't ask for anything more - even at 800MSP."
http://www.360-gamer...hts-into-dreams

Post it gamer (4/5)
"It is a beautifully crafted HD version that faithfully recaptures the dreamlike gameplay gamers fell in love with, but its simplistic premise and lack of explanation may not capture today’s plot-driven audience."
http://www.postitgam...eams-hd-review/

Gaming Illustrated (80%)
"NiGHTS into Dreams certainly wasn’t the game I thought it was all those years ago. Actually, it fits along quite nicely with many games offered today. It is a pure gameplay experience because it begs to be played over and over to fully master it."
http://gamingillustr...box-360-review/

Gaming Nexus (8/10)
"As a Saturn game, NiGHTS into Dreams under-delivered. Sixteen years later it's easy to see why, but that shouldn't keep you from playing through this bizarre dreamscape. Just be ready for some frustrating boss fights and linear flying stages!"
http://www.gamingnex...s/Item3701.aspx

Videogamer.com (8/10)
"There's just nothing else quite like it. NiGHTS HD doesn't transition as elegantly into 2012 as it deserves, then, but it's clear this 16-year-old cult classic still knows how to soar."
http://www.videogame...ams/review.html

True Achievements (4/5)
"Ultimately, one’s enjoyment of NiGHTS is going to boil down to whether or not you had a fondness for it going in. In today’s landscape, it’s an average to slightly-above-average platformer that still carries its unique flying twist. For those who grew up with it, it’s a well-crafted upgrade of a title that let us see into 3D on a console that technically had little business doing so."
http://www.trueachie...into-dreams.htm

Put That Back (3/5)
"Normally if I were to discuss the intricacies of the controls for NiGHTs into Dreams I’d talk up how absolutely flawless they are...
However instead of the full range of movement available in the original the NiGHTs move in only eight directions. Somewhere in the process between porting the PS2 version to the PS3 a mistake had to have been made."

http://putthatback.o...ts-into-dreams/

Super Poly Pixel (7/10)
"2012 is just not a time for a game like Nights. In a world where so many games are vying for your attention, it just can’t compete with games that are just better at explaining their intentions and designs faster. Still, I’ll never forget you Nights!"
http://www.superpoly...into-dreams-hd/

Plus XP (6/10)
http://www.plusxp.co...eams-hd-review/
"It may not be perfect, but either way it’s a great way to enjoy the original Nights experience on today’s consoles."

The Gaming Vault
"Overall the game is short and somewhat shallow with some rough visuals, but the gameplay that IS there is still damn fun."

If Nights made an appearance on the XB dashboard it would help a lot I reckon.

Actually last time I checked, it was in fact displayed on the XB dashboard just like JSR. What's disappointing is the lack of positive reviews on Metacritic. I'm seeing a lot more (smaller) positive reviews on the game lately yet its been at 72 on Metacritic with only a few reviews for a while now. Speaking of Metacritic, only my user review is listed there at the moment. So I could really use some help from the other fans, if the reviews fail to explain what's so good about the game, then the fans certainly should ;) Please don't bring down the score because of the controls though, especially now that we're still trying to get those fixed.

#100004 Sales Figures

Posted by Draikin on 12 October 2012 - 09:39 PM in NiGHTS chit-chat

The PSN leaderboard seems to be limited to 1000 players (or it's a real coincidence and exactly 1000 players were listed on Spring Valley), is this not the case for the XBLA version then? I'm not sure how to interpret the numbers though. For what it's worth, the game seems to be following just behiond Sonic Adventure 2 in overall sales. I'd like for it to do better though, there doesn't seem too much hype around the release.

#99998 NiGHTS PS3 theme

Posted by Draikin on 12 October 2012 - 07:57 PM in NiGHTS chit-chat

I certainly purchased NiGHTS into Dreams, and yet the PSN is asking me to pay for the premium theme. There's a chance something went awry when you got it and you didn't have to pay.

I think it's actually the other way around. The theme was supposed to be free, and it's listed as free in the PSN store for me.

#99968 NiGHTS PS3 theme

Posted by Draikin on 12 October 2012 - 12:05 AM in NiGHTS chit-chat

Just a reminder for those that bought the PSN version: there's a free NiGHTS theme you can download from the PSN store (had some difficulty finding it, it's best to check the latest releases). I think you have to pay for it if you didn't buy NiGHTS HD though.

#99967 SS Mode

Posted by Draikin on 11 October 2012 - 11:58 PM in NiGHTS chit-chat

The view and control precision seems to be the same to me, but perhaps it has less input lag which would basically translate in more responsive controls. So basically that would mean NiGHTS would react faster when you change direction or press a button in the Saturn mode because of the reduced graphics (think of how progamers often run their games in very low graphics settings to get higher framerates and less lag). I haven't really played the Saturn mode enough to say whether or not that's the case, it's difficult to test. The core controls seem to behave in the same way though.

#99966 REMEMBER TO RATE YOUR GAME PURCHASES

The game climbed back to 6th position today in the US XBLA daily sales. The ratings don't seem to get updated though, not sure what's up with that. I'm guessing that only happens every few days.

#99960 Contacting Sega about the control problems

Posted by Draikin on 11 October 2012 - 11:10 PM in NiGHTS chit-chat

As short as this message is, it's less of a stock message than the kind you guys got. At least the possibility of a patch was acknowledged.

That's definitely different from the response of Sega Europe. While it doesn't have to mean anything will change, it's good to hear they're looking into the problem. All the more reason for everyone to contact support as well, I'd say.
